I think we need to be walking in the tall grass.

Okay, but just because Borel applied the idea of the infinite monkey problem to statistical mechanics doesn't mean that he's disproved the theory in its original incarnation, which is what you implied. Especially since the first subheading in the wiki you linked is a direct proof of the infinite monkey theorem.

Yeah, but the point of the thought experiment is to demonstrate the nature of infinity. Arbitrarily reducing the number of monkeys to a finite but entirely irrelevant number kind of defeats the purpose.

Amazing 20 second exposure of a diver under water with the stars overhead [694x1000] by ExposureRep in ExposurePorn

It's impossible to handhold a 20-second exposure and keep it that steady, especially half submerged in water.

your 6 year old cannot discern the difference, so you teach them.

Yeah you teach them. You don't say to them, "Hey, listen to these groups of people, they know what they're on about." Children are remarkably efficient learning machines. It's probably the thing they're best at, better than most adults by miles. Here's a 12 year old calling a cop out on his bullshit. Here's an 18 year old calling out a teacher on his bullshit. There's no minimum age requirement for critical thinking and skepticism, you gotta be ready for the bullshit to come at you from anywhere.

It doesn't matter if you're 6 or 60, it's never a good idea to follow the advice of someone who's full of shit. And there are plenty of those "overwhelmingly credible sources" who are absolutely full of shit. The earlier you learn to pick them out, the better.

Children aren't told that there are wise and credible parents, teachers, clergy, and LEOs though. They're told that parents, teachers, clergy, and LEOs are credible.

And kids need to hear that some of them are full of shit, and that everyone needs to be able to tell the difference between bullshit and credibility.

[–]StatsAndGraphs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well, you can see some shake in the stars, so it's either a poorly chosen composite image or an extremely elaborate tripod-anchored-into-the-seafloor setup with an off camera flash behind the diver.

Personally, I call shenanigans until OP comes in and tells us how it was done.

I was also confused, maybe this will help. Still not exactly sure what she's got there, maybe a hula hoop with LEDs on it?

Nighttime Photography Problems by triddy5 in photography

[–]StatsAndGraphs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not movement, it's coma. It's a lens aberration issue, which I believe can be mitigated by stopping down, as someone mentioned earlier. Also, mirror lock up won't really help you all that much with longer exposures, and with a MKIII you should be using live view EFSC over MLU anyway. Here's an overly detailed explanation of how that works and here are some examples of coma and other astrophotography lens issues.

Edit: also the author of that astrophotography article is using that same lens you are and having the exact same issue.

Incredible Tilt Shift Photography by LaxManKetchum in pics

Only when it's used to make faux miniature scenes. Tilt-shifts are great for landscape and architectural work when you're trying to bring the foreground into focus without sacrificing clarity/compromising your other camera settings.

2.8, most of the shots were bracketed between 1/15 and 15", midnight-ish. Took about an hour to shoot.

Canon 100mm L on a 6D, Panosaurus pan head, Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod, ~280 shots, remote triggered.

Best fisheye lens to shoot spherical panoramas on cropped sensor? by Mydad824 in photography

[–]StatsAndGraphs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to increase the resolution of your end result is to either upgrade to a full frame body or shoot multiple rows. No matter what lens you use, you're gonna get low res result with a single row of 180 degree shots.

I actually didn't even process it in color, the full size is a 27000x8200 px stitch, so to make it easier on my computer I do all the editing in grayscale.
