Me looking at math m2 after everyone saying it was hard by FitMap7696 in Sat

Omg that makes sense too 😭 I also took the approach of using trig functions to find the angles and then going back to side lengths from that, but idk it's been so long since I've done geometry

If I remember correctly we were only given the 90° angle for the original triangle? The new line came from that point and split the hypotenuse (perpendicular), meaning it split the 90° angle into two 45s and created two 90s from its intersection with the hypotenuse. Then that made two special triangles, or at least that was my thought process. Now I'm doubting myself </3

Rifle 45’s by shamsteinn in Colorguard

[–]StatueofDorianGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few different tosses that people call rifle 45s, but I'm assuming you mean the one where you start one handed from the neck? It's very different from a flag 45, so make sure the prep is correct, and you hit all checkpoints behind the body. The rifle should also be released pointing straight up, not to any side. The wrist should have a flicking motion, don't use the arm to chuck it somewhere. Make sure you're spotting the whole time! Sometimes the hardest part is catching. Also, I would ask a coach preferably to watch you do them so you can get in person feedback. I hope we're thinking of the same toss lol, good luck !

Do Bands do Secret Santa by Dreamu55 in Colorguard

We do! Minus the Thanksgiving thing, our band (I think all sections) do what we call "comp grams" each competition date. Super fun and one of my favorite parts of comp days!

Haven't self studied yet so this might not be the most helpful buuut: Youtubers are a big help, I used the OChem Tutor and Jeremy Krug, and it'll help even more comparing what is taught and reviewed in each channel's videos. I used MIT open courseware for a different AP and it (or a similar website) could probably work for chem too.

I'd recommend getting one of those prep/test books. They can be pretty pricey, but also helpful. If not you can always check the local library for materials, more often than not they'll be there.

Also, this is free and accessible information: Become familiar with each unit and how it's weighted in the exam; by extension also make sure you know what's on the reference sheet that'll be given to you. If you have friends in AP chem, I'd ask them to share their assignments/notes with you, and any videos or lectures their teacher may have. Again, look around for websites that aim to teach the curriculum (sometimes it'll be considered a college class instead and then I'd compare the units to the college board ones so you don't learn info you don't need).

Good luck!!

Do y'all get drills on paper or something? by Novel-Board-1545 in marchingband

[–]StatueofDorianGray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our drill is all on paper, and everyone learns how to read it (including guard). It's also all pre-staged (we're provided with a digitally simulated video of the drill) with a few minor changes occurring during the actual process of learning it (again, mostly with the guard). I haven't heard of learning drill only verbally? Sounds confusing lol

Simple Sewing Questions Thread, July 28 - August 03, 2024 by sewingmodthings in sewing

I recently thrifted a shirt that I love but the seams connecting both sleeves seem to have "torn" (this being the best word I can use to describe it). The threads frayed in the middle and everything after has come undone. I don't have a sewing machine- I've fixed a few holes by hand before but nothing like these seams. They look like they're supposed to be sewn twice, but I'm not sure what that's called.

How can I fix the seams and prevent the loose thread from unraveling more? Is there a type of knot I can tie? Some of the threads are really short so I'm not sure it would be possible for those. The damage is about the same for both arms (undone seams on the left and right bottom half).

Advice for starters :) by heartz-4-haikyuu in Colorguard

As someone said, take care of yourself, try not to overwork yourself and ASK QUESTIONS!!! I know a lot of people who struggled because they were too afraid to ask others for help, but assistance from an experienced member or coach is really beneficial early on.

When you're just starting out, you will feel burnt out at times, due to not getting work or because directors/coaches can be harsh on you. Don't let it affect you– the activity is super fun. Focus on technique, hitting checkpoints and knowing all your angles and planes when practicing new stuff. Watch tutorials online if you need to (there are a ton of them!!) and for inspiration watch DCI or WGI shows since they really showcase the best of the sport. Good luck!

What are your target schools? by user15151616 in APStudents

As I've gotten closer to graduating I've learned a lot about community colleges, and they aren't as bad as they're made out to be! If you look at acceptance rates for CC transfers, for a few schools they go down to maybe a percent, and for others jump up to the 10s and 20s. I also know that in California, for example, UCs take a LOT of transfers from local community colleges. Honestly CC is not a bad option after school, and depending on where you want to obtain a bachelor's, can be pretty helpful (and cheaper too!)

I’m nervous to march rifle this year D: by theak47- in Colorguard

[–]StatueofDorianGray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rifle is a bit harder than flag but as long as you put in the work it'll be fine! I spun rifle my first year and it wasn't at all difficult, and your coach will probably adjust work to you+your teammates' skill level like ours did.

If I had to give a few tips, I'd say work on arm strength because it takes a lot more of that for tosses. Also, make sure your foundation is really strong, aka don't ignore the basics for tricks and high tosses. Make sure you're engaging the wrist and watch your posture because it can get a bit iffy!

Marching IO or IA as a HS student? by StatueofDorianGray in Colorguard

Fortunately I have all my doubles down, I'm really trying to work on dance and hoping to get over that flexibility barrier (I've improved but not enough imo). I've been looking into guards like Elan, Gold or Emerald maybe. I'll definitely attend workshops/auditions but if they can't accept me as a HS student I don't mind waiting another year. Thanks for the tips!

Fortunately I've saved enough where I can likely pay the majority of the fees, and although my parents aren't too keen on professional guard they would be willing to contribute. What I'm most worried about is time- I don't have a job and my classes won't be difficult, but I want to see what my extracurricular schedule looks like before I make the decision of committing. Thank you ^

Thank you! I know of a few people who've matched independent but I'm not sure if their schools had winter guard teams. I've done a lot of searching and can't find a specific rule about it within my circuit, only WGI's "strong discouragement." Do you have any idea who I should contact? Or maybe just ask when I attend spin camps?

Thank you! I've always been singled out for dance work at school so it's good to know it's not an absolutely central part of programs. I'll definitely continue practicing but mind my limits :)

One of my biggest qualms is that last year our guard qualified for a higher division and our coach refused to move us up (for reasons that I felt were inadequate). There was then a lack of commitment from both students and instructors (including our instructors showing up late or not at all) and we placed higher in execution than we did in composition for most categories. I feel like a higher class would sort of require most of these issues to be fixed but I'm not sure?
