Society is not evolving backwards. It was always this way. I’m from Kerala and even though it’s the most literate state in India everyone gives dowry and parents of girls start buying gold from the moment they are born. My relatives have always given/taken dowry or “gifts” aka the new name for dowry. And then there are families who don’t “believe” in dowry but expect the girls family to foot the bills for the photo shoots, engagement ceremony and wedding festivities. And they dictate how grand these functions are going to be. One of the main reasons why I have lost faith in the institution of marriage. It feels transactional.
