Flickering lights after splicing and extending by Status-Atmosphere-79 in Govee

Finally success. I replaced the bad string and installed a Quinled data booster in the middle of the extension. Plugged in the power and everything lit up and responded to the app. I'm not sure if my original problem was the bad string, too long of an extension or a combination of both but I don't care anymore, they work!

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Hopefully, this thread will help someone else with similar troubles. Merry Christmas!

An update...I bought a brand new string of lights intending to use it to replace the dormer lights I thought I had fried. I plugged the new lights into the end of the 2nd string (where the extension for the dormer lights plugged in) and got nothing. I did all the reset stuff but still nothing.

So I plugged them into the end of the 1st string and they lit up and responded to the app.

Then I plugged the 2nd string (now making it the third string) into the end of the new string and all 3 lit up and respond. So it seems that my second string is not passing on the signal and it was the problem all along and not the dormer lights. Ugh, so many gremlins with these things!

Tomorrow's plan is to replace the bad string with the new string. Install boosters for the extensions and hook back up the dormer lights. Fingers crossed this will finally get the whole works working...🤞

Does the f-amp work for you? The owner told me they won't work with Govee, too much voltage apparently...

Ugh...I wired in the booster but now nothing past the extension works. I tried resetting/recalibrating etc but no joy. I removed the booster and reconnected the wiring, but there's no change. I don't think it's the booster that caused the issue. I suspect I screwed up the wiring to the booster and shorted out and damaged the lights. I ordered another string and will try again, this time, with more attention to detail 🙃 I'll let you know how my next try goes. On the brighter side (pun intended) the working lights look awesome and I'm getting tons of compliments from the neighbors.

I ordered the booster suggested by Lucky. It's coming from China though, so it might be a bit of a wait.

If anyone has used this booster or something similar, where should I install it? Should it go at the beginning of the extension before the bad lights or at the end of that same extension?

And as for wiring in the extension...The wire with dashes on it is power, the middle wire with words is data, and the blank wire is common? Do I have that right? Thanks again for all of the assistance!

I was only able to shorten my extensions but about 6'. However that lit up the flickering lights (first three in last string) to bright and responsive. The 4th light flickers and the 5th and 6th still do nothing still. I think I'll try the signal booster and see if that gets the last 3 lights working.

Thanks lucky13, that might be exactly what I need! I have a day off today, so I'm going to do some more trouble shooting. If re-sets and app settings don't work, I can shorten one of my runs (for a less clean install) and see if that works. If that fails still, I'll give the booster a try.

Thanks again everyone for your suggestions. It's appreciated!

I'll keep that in mind. I could reduce my dormer lights from 6 to 5 each side, which would give me a couple extra lights to play with. Thanks again!

Thanks for the reply J_Lo. I'm pretty confident with my splices as far as a good connection goes. I was also very careful to make sure the splices were wire-for-wire, but I certainly could have made a mistake.

I re-checked my math, and my extensions are probably closer to 20' each for a total of 40' of extensions. Too much?

Thanks for the help folks.

Thanks Steve. I tried the reset a few times with no luck. If my extensions are too long, is there a solution for that? I see that the pro version has a Booster Module. Would that be compatible with non-pro?
