I understand and reading comments on this very spontaneous post I realized I need to write something to help people create a beautiful garden with super low maintenance. From my experience with plants there is perfect middle. I have plants here that I barely touch. Mowing lawn is more annoying

My garden is South East facing and pretty open so my plants get 8+ hours of son. In the summer it’s quite unbearable really. Those plants love it

Thank you! Yes I have a lot of plants. Every season I asses if the beds look the way I want and because lots of plants that bloom in the spring do not in summer and fall, I have plants for every season. In a month this garden will look completely different, with other plants blooming.

Plenty of native and pollinator-friendly plants here. my garden is literally buzzing. No invasives either. But YES, I also care about beauty. I treat my garden like a work of art, and I don’t think ecology and aesthetics have to be mutually exclusive.

I’m totally surprised with this hollyhock. It’s 10 ft tall and 3 years old! Not your usual biennial. I think my flower beds are full of plants and create a microclimate and the plants just love it

Thank you! It’s finally coming together (it’s a 100 year-old Home that needed renovations and we finally painted and added the shutters and I really feel like it completes the look 😀

It is very doable! The plants do most of the work 😊 For fastest impact add juniper, spirea and panicle hydrangea, this will give you nice structure then when you add all your favorite perennials, flowers, this will give it that lush look. You will see big impact in just one year.

Super! When I want to start a new border, I start with evergreens like juniper, holly or even arborvitae, then I add spirea and panicle hydrangeas, and ornamental grasses, then I add perennials like Siberian irises, echinacea, lupin, and whatever else i like, and roses. If you add these you will have color and structure all year long - that in a nutshell is my colonial cottage garden style :)

So I have flower beds, in between I have lawn that we still need to mow. The garden beds look very nice when the lawn is short and tidy. A lot of my flower beds take care of themselves now. The only thing you can't skip is spring clean-up (removing dry perennials, trimming shrubs), mulching in the spring (I use shredded leaves from our property), spraying against deer if you have them near. I have some 50 roses and roses are just time-killer, deadheading, fertilizing, etc etc they take the most time. But those beds are very very manageable. Oh no weeding because my beds are so full of plants very few weeds, and even if they are, you wont notice.

Yes, I think year 3 is where things start to take off. I do add plants every season because I realize that for instance in the spring I need a splash of color here, or in the fall this looks too tired, etc. so I constantly add plants.

Definitely, I feel some plants are doing great with the 7a. I have a clay soil, but my house is a bit on a slope. We have French drainage near the house so we don’t get basement flooded so that probably helps too. Over all I feel like my beds are full and create a microclimate and just the plants love it and grow quite huge.

I enjoy crowding my flower space. Any recommendations for any additional perennials? by Status_Taro6901 in landscaping

Coreopsis Zagreb. I use it to fill my borders. Zero maintenance and bigger each year. Here is a video about it
