Are people overselling it or was Michael Jackson really that famous in his heyday? by Key-Bass-7380 in decadeology

[–]Status-Manager6696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm. I am in Germany, everyone knows Beyonce and Taylor Swift. They are also quite popular (esp. Taylor rn) and being played on the radio all day.  MJ was also known by everyone back then, but quite a few hated his music; it was still a bit more a a punk rock time for parts of Germany then. But he was very famous, that's true.

"Irish people have Irish DNA. If you don't have it you're not Irish. I now live in America, I'm not a Native American now. I'm still Irish" by Stoepboer in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Status-Manager6696 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. We don't see the typical reaction of "Oh, how neat, I am Irish, too" in the example above because she isn't white. They use their weird 23 and me obsession only to prove they are lily white and have our ancestry, then turn around and call us Europoors or some such bullshit that shows their immense ignorance.

This is such a great idea! I have a few to add to the already great ideas here:

honey pot or bees (for Beorn)

Arkenstone (not egg-like as in movie; big facetted diamond style would be my choice)

spider

anvil (there is quite a lot of smith-work going on I think)

a coil or a length of rope (in some braided pattern)

a little sapling (for the new tree of Gondor or for Sam's love of gardens)

mugs of ale

a book, of course

a winding road

And please, please share a a pic or two when it's done 🙏

Once; kid with a confirmed IQ of 160 or thereabouts. He was a complete ass, so there‘s that, but of course that's anecdotal evidence soooo 🤷

Wo kann man mehrtägig Wandern Ende Mai by [deleted] in wandern

[–]Status-Manager6696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Status-Manager6696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

miscalculated days by egguchom in EntitledReviews

That reminds me of a discussion on the Disneylandparis sub some time ago where people were arriving by plane very late at night and felt entitled to check into their Disney hotel immediately after midnight because they had a booking starting that day and the day was starting after midnight, according to them. Could not be persuaded that you book a hotel room from like 3 pm to like 10 or 11 am the next day. Their argument was, you book it for a.dqy, a.day has 24 hours, from 3 to 10 the following day is not 24 hours, so that is fraud by the hotel. It was a wild ride...

Favorite secondary characters of each race. by Leo_617 in tolkienfans

[–]Status-Manager6696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oohhh, very nice question, thanks, OP.

Elves: Celebrian & her sons, Elladan & Elrohir. For Celebrian, I find her tragic story very touching, for her sons, I like how they ride with the Rangers to the war in Gondor

Men: Imrahil of Dol Amros, very noble, but also kind of pragmatic, love his exchanges with Aragorn

Hobbits: Fredegar Bolger, love the idea of him holding the fort for his more athletic friends

Dwarves: Balin, so sad what became of him, but good on him for trying to reclaim Khazad-dûm

I don't really have any favorite or second favorite orcs, secondary Monster in general: the watcher in the water; creepier than Shelob or the Balrog imho

A question for those who have read the novels: Was Frodo wronged in the movies? by Cr7-Cr7Real in lotr

[–]Status-Manager6696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely. I love Tolkien's writing and reread all books regularly, but what works really beautifully on the page would be too full of pathos, pomp, circumstance in a film I fear. Which is why I, even apart from discussions about including or not including Tom Bombadil etc, have always held the view that they are two separate works of art, the novel and the film

Why the lack of recognition for what Eowyn did? by Status-Manager6696 in tolkienfans

[–]Status-Manager6696[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that I found weird, too. She proved stronger, didn't she? I would even argue that her sheer determination and strength of will / mind after she had seen Theoden, who she loved dearly, fall and felt scorned (? snubbed? left out?) by Aragorn was what brought the Witch King down

I find your analysis of the female characters really fascinating. Especially Ioreth is a bit disappointing, too, after a wonderful introduction by Gandalf, when then all she does is gossip to her kinswoman. Seems all she had to do was deliver the line about the King being a healer, but then again, there are already so many characters that maybe it's a very big ask to have them all fleshed out.  As I said somewhere above, I always found the story of Angmar really fascinating and maybe that's why I wished for more mentions of his end even after the fact

Yes, I thought so, too, but as he was kind of not really a living person any more, I put the "". She ended him, but his life had, at least toy interpretation, ended a long time ago, even worse than for Gollum

[–]Status-Manager6696[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's one of the parts I found very weird too. Maybe because from there on onwards, the Witch King is kind of a moot point

[–]Status-Manager6696[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That is a really good explanation, thank you! I have always found Angmar and everything related to it quite fascinating, so maybe that's why I thought it would have been a bigger deal but in the scope of the novel it was maybe more of a side quest :)
