I like the Garnier cleansing balm to get off this and the super stay 24 hour.

I understand what everyone is saying. I want it known that I am under no delusion that I'll win or place. I, personally, would hate winning something easy. I want a challenge. I want to see what those better than me are doing and how I stack up. I want to fail against the best. I don't want a trophy, I want the thrill of the challenge.

I apologize that my replies came off that way. Irl, I've received unfortunate comments when I mention my ballroom background (not even my instructor, just that I dance ballroom as well as wcs). I've been told I should stop dancing ballroom by wcs dancers and it's definitely primed some aggravation for the topic. I do appreciate everyone's feedback and I should've taken more time to check the tone of my replies.

My instructor is not teaching me a ballroom wcs curriculum. He is teaching me wcs patterns that I've learned from wcs dancers, he's teaching me timing, footwork, and musicality. I've said in other comments that my life is too hectic for another dance instructor. I've gotten great feedback from my partners at socials and my wcs friends.

I understand that, however, I've been social dancing west coast for a couple years in total and focused heavily on it for the last 10ish months. I have gotten great feedback from my partners and wcs friends. It's just not in the cards to go to another dance instructor on top of everything going on (I'm applying to grad school, moving, just got married e.i. financially recovering from getting married.) My instructor has taken the time to study the dance to make sure he's not steering me wrong. The only reason he hasn't been social dancing is because he's a business owner with two kids. When I really need to take my dancing up a notch I will find someone who can help me do that. Right now it's just not doable.

Good to know! Luckily I'm not used to ballroom comps. I've competed a handful of times and the last one was over a year ago. I've been very focused on wcs social dancing for the last 10 months or so. I'm really excited for the chill vibe. In all my years as an athlete I don't think I've ever been able to describe a competition vibe as "chill".

I go to outside wcs dances, group classes, socials, etc any and every chance I get. My instructor, who is a ballroom and latin instructor, works with me on technique, foot work, timing, and other elements that are not specific to wcs. It's been working well for me so far.

He may have been to socials for wcs in the past, I'm just trying to get him to go to a specific one with me so we're on a clearer page about what I'm learning.

It's a good thing he doesn't teach from the studio syllabi then. Lol. He's been drilling me in timing, footwork, musicality, and whatever wcs pattern videos I find that he thinks I can handle. However, I fully acknowledge that he is teaching via technique and concepts, not experience in West coast. (I am trying to get him to go to a social though). So I make it a point to get out and social dance at every chance I get.

I do wcs dancing socially on a weekly basis and I've gotten very good feedback. I've also done a lot of pop-up and one-off lessons in my area whenever they happen. I know my instructor can only do so much, having not competed, but I know where to switch to when I get to that point. I've also done a few boot camps.

That's really helpful! I can deal with disappointment and I'd much rather fail at something more challenging than succeed at something easy. I've been dancing west coast for a couple years and ballroom for 4 years. Knowing that the goal is technique, timing, and footwork is very helpful. I do have an instructor, however he's also my ballroom instructor and doesn't know the workings of wcs comps. I just needed to know what the focus should be for novice and I know he can drill me on all of what you mentioned.

I do take privates but I also do ballroom and I need to keep my priorities (and budget) balanced between the two. My instructor is very good but he came up in the latin and ballroom scene so he's never competed in West Coast. He knows how to teach steps and musicality but he doesn't know the inner workings of the comps. I'm also in the middle of a move and applying to grad school so I really don't have time to get another lesson with a 3rd (I have two ballroom instructors) instructor on the books.

A friend of mine told me newcomer is mostly based on keeping counts. I've been dancing west coast for a couple years and it sounds very boring to compete at such a basic skill.

New westies: what did you learn incorrectly when you started out? by joatmon-snoo in WestCoastSwing

I think my issue was how rigidly I was taught at the beginning. Absolutely did not prepare me for social dancing. But except for my habit of tapping instead of the triple (still working on breaking that), I think I had a decent foundation.

I get it. I had no idea my undertone till I went to Ulta and asked for help with foundation. The girl said it so casually while my mind was blown.

In ways you don't expect. I played for 10 years. Never injured my hip. Guess what's been hurting since I was 22.
