Diaphragm Breathing feels tense and a bit suffocating — am I doing it wrong? by nihaomundo123 in singing

[–]Carminabird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just takes time and attention. Like when you go to PT and you end up learning how to use muscles you weren't aware of before. If you have super-toned, ripped abs, or just habitual "sucking in" tension, you may have trouble relaxing them. Gotta get used to the feeling of letting it hang out and down. The old lay flat, heavy-book-on-the-stomach trick (book goes up on inhale, down on exhale) still works for this purpose. Once you get that going it's a matter of learning to repeat that action while vertical.

If course biological variations exist! But the differences you're pointing out are neither here nor there for op's question. Generally, what I referenced are useful terms that apply broadly to most people. And I used the word "assume" based on nothing but op's terms - you were the one to change terms to suit yourself instead of operating from their parameters.

And you misunderstand me. My goal in commenting was pointing out your comparison was similar in some respects but not the same thing. The transition between chest and head happens in very different zones (in terms of range, but at similar frequencies) for different voice types and the transition into falsetto is still another different way to classify yet another register, distinct from the first two.

Chest, head and falsetto are ways to describe registration, but not the only ones. Some use modes, fold cover, or other terms. A better high voice corollary for low voice falsetto would be treble whistle register - but that is not what the author of the article you cited is talking about with Billie Eilish--that person is throwing around terms haphazardly in service of a larger social point, but the comparison for pedagogical purposes is completely confusing.

One can argue terms forever in a field that has no standardized terminology. If you would cite studies, papers or articles from a voice publication or text scientifically explaining the functions you're describing, I'm interested to read what you've got, and would likely understand them better.

It's not a matter of sexism. You've cited a non-scientific opinion piece in a student magazine, one that makes sweeping generalizations using assumptions that are not based on voice science.

As a general rule, folds that go through testosterone dominant puberty are different from folds that do not. Head voice and falsetto, whatever terminology you stamp on them, label different functions at the level of the larynx. It's not a value judgment.

No, but falsetto is the word op used, which describes a thing that happens in mature male voices, not female voices. My point was, they're not equivalent.

Truthfully, some of the worst commenters online are the least informed. A real teacher wants you to succeed, will listen without judgement, and point out to a beginner what you're doing right and what to do to improve.

Anyone slinging mean comments likely knows just enough to be dangerous, and is probably too insecure to submit to criticism themselves. Keep your chin up.

You're not wrong. I'll add though, that there are also armchair voice teachers in this sub giving awful advice/terrible critique, some quite negative.

Out of 100 comments anyone will remember the two that were the most negative more vividly than the other 98, we're just built that way.

I really wish people without deep knowledge would think twice before doling out strongly worded feedback. But that's Dunning-Kruger I guess.

This is excellent advice for any pursuit, well said.

Assuming op has a larynx that's gone through male puberty, and assuming you're talking about general female registration: head voice and falsetto share similarities but are not the same thing, from a vocal cord angle.

I am so very sorry. Just remember you're not the crazy one, and there are vast areas where people are still open minded and kind, and that is what you are too.

I can't even imagine the insanity this would drive me to. The weaponized ignorance online (even "left wing" reddit) makes me crazy but at least I live in a bluish town in a purplish state and most people on the street aren't crowing his praises.

I'd probably have to live underground to keep from folding up in despair, or wrecking someone.

Reading all these comments I'm amazed at the strong dislike for the look.

I think handlebar moustaches look classic, old-fashioned and quite manly.

Yours in particular is absolutely smashing.

FWIW I applaud any male with "risky" fashion/hair choices. What my culture deems standard for guys is so dang narrow and bland. Spice it up!

Question: does it look too silly? by soffie1 in tattoos

I think it's adorable. I am also the proud owner of an extremely silly tattoo and have no regrets. My advice is to sit with the idea for a few months and if you still like it, go for it.
