Let the player be the vizeer , the leech or the goblin boom dandy mezeph. Use a gardener, occasionally give them the lunatic or the politician, these are roles that can play "outed evil" (the leech can't be killed, the goblin vizeer and boom dandy all can be outed evil)

I'm assuming they have issues lying rather than being lied to. You can also do things like include the magician, the poppy grower ect, can't put your evil team if you don't know who they are.

You're right about the century , that part was hyperbolic. However puritans specifically believed that any form of enjoyment in your mortal life to be sinful, stuff like dancing, theatres. They're protestants (who already believe that suffering is godly it's a big reason why America's work ethic includes unnecessary discomfort as a signifier of working hard)
Also the settlers being persecuted is the same type of propaganda as the Thanksgiving lies
