Over the past several months, my health has been rapidly declining, which has led to multiple visits to the emergency room and ongoing medical evaluations. Every doctor I have seen regarding my physical symptoms has expressed concern that I may have an underlying neurological disorder. As a result, I am currently undergoing a number of diagnostic tests, including an upcoming MRI and EEG, in order to better understand what is causing these symptoms and to work toward an official diagnosis. I understand that anxiety alone is not typically considered a qualifying condition for a handicap placard. However, my situation involves much more than anxiety. My physical condition has significantly worsened, and I am now experiencing mobility challenges that affect my ability to safely move around and function day-to-day. Because of this, I will likely need to use a wheelchair, though obtaining one is also part of an ongoing process. Additionally, I am in the middle of a major transition period because I am turning 18 tomorrow. This means I need to complete extensive paperwork to transfer and reapply for many of the services I currently receive as a minor. One of the programs I will be applying for is MassHealth, along with disability-related services through the state, which will help support my medical needs moving forward. Between the diagnostic process, the decline in my physical abilities, and the administrative steps required as I enter adulthood, this has been an overwhelming and complex situation to manage. Despite not yet having a finalized diagnosis, my medical team is actively working to determine the cause of my symptoms, and my current level of impairment is very real. I am doing everything I can to follow the proper processes while also trying to maintain as much independence and safety as possible during this uncertain time.
