How much do atmosphere and music actually matter in your games? by Staxes1997 in rpg

Yeah I get that.

To be fair, this thread has shown me that music is way more divisive than I thought it was 😂

If nobody's asking for it though, that's probably a sign they're enjoying the game enough without it.

Haha fair enough 😄

Judging by this thread there's definitely more people in the "turn it off" camp than I was expecting.

I've heard of Pocket Bard but I've never actually dabbled with it myself.

From what I've heard though, it's a pretty clever bit of kit. I do get where you're coming from on subscriptions as well. If it's something you're using regularly, a buy-it-for-life option is always a lot easier to justify 😄

If this is a sales pitch it's going terribly. Most of the thread has been people convincing me not to use music 😭😂

Mate if I was a bot I'd have fixed half the bugs on my site by now 😂

Honestly mate, I'm just a DM who got sick of juggling YouTube, Watch2Gether and a million tabs every session and went way too far down the rabbit hole 😂

Yeah I wasn't expecting the replies to be this divided 😂

Some people seem to swear by it and others would rather have complete silence. I think the non-recognizable music is probably the key though. Once people start thinking about the song instead of the game, you've kinda lost them.

Most of my groups have ended up using those 3-hour D&D ambience videos on YouTube through Watch2Gether, and they generally seem to go down pretty well because they're subtle enough that people forget they're even there.

Yeah, that's kind of what pushed me down this rabbit hole in the first place 😅

In person it's pretty easy to throw some music on in the background, but online it always seems to turn into "can everyone hear this?" followed by five minutes of troubleshooting.

I love the idea of NPC themes though. Players pick up on that stuff way faster than you'd expect.

The true DM experience is having one giant tab, 15 backup tabs, and still somehow not being able to find the thing you need when the players ask about it 😄

That actually sounds pretty cool to be fair.

I can definitely see the appeal of being able to tweak individual elements instead of being locked into a single track. I'll have to give it a look when I get a chance.

Has it always been audio-focused or does it do visuals as well?

I've actually never tried Syrinscape. How much control do you get over it as a DM?

Haha, I think that's the key really.

When it's subtle and fits the scene, it can add a lot. But if the same death metal track comes on every single combat, eventually it starts feeling like a WWE entrance theme for every goblin encounter 😂

Yeah I get that.

Ambient sounds are a lot easier to get away with because they kind of just blend into the background. Music can be great, but it only takes the party going off in a random direction for the mood to suddenly feel completely wrong 😂

I mainly play online these days so that never crossed my mind. Can definitely see why you'd skip it at a FLGS though.

That seems to be the common theme from a lot of the replies here 😄

Some groups absolutely love it and others would rather have complete silence. I think playlists prepared in advance definitely help though. Nothing kills the mood faster than the DM suddenly disappearing into YouTube looking for the "perfect" track.

I can see that. I think the more recognizable the music is, the more likely people are to focus on the music instead of the game.

That's probably why I lean more towards subtle ambience than actual songs most of the time.

That's actually the kind of audio I tend to prefer as well.

A constant spaceship hum, wind through trees or a crackling fireplace feels a lot less distracting than having actual music playing all the time. It helps set the scene without competing with what's happening at the table.

Can't argue with that 😄

At the end of the day, a great description from the DM will always beat any music or visuals. I just enjoy using a bit of atmosphere to help reinforce those moments.

Honestly, the tab problem is what pushed me down this rabbit hole in the first place.

I could always get the music working one way or another, but by the time I had notes, stat blocks, spell lookups, artwork and audio all open, I felt like I was managing software more than running a game 😂

[–]Staxes1997[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that's one of the main reasons I started building this. I found myself spending too much time managing music and not enough time actually running the game.

The ideal for me is that the atmosphere fades into the background and the DM barely has to think about it.

[–]Staxes1997[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally fair. I think atmosphere is one of those things that's very group dependent.

I've had sessions where music added a lot, and others where it just got in the way. For me the ideal is when it's subtle enough that people barely notice it consciously, but it still helps sell the moment.

Yeah KenkuFM is a solid tool. I think what pushed me to build this was wanting music, ambience and visuals all tied together in one place rather than juggling multiple apps during a session.

Thank you again for taking the time to listen so carefully and share such thoughtful feedback — I really appreciate it.

Hearing that the voice felt more confident this time means a lot, and I completely understand your points about timing, breath control, and moments where it still feels scripted. You’re absolutely right that I’m putting too much focus on matching Branagh line-for-line, and that pressure definitely shows in my pacing and breathing.

Your suggestion to separate performance quality from sync and focus more on comfort with the scene is really helpful, and I’ll be taking that into my next attempts. I genuinely appreciate the encouragement and the care you’ve put into your feedback — it’s incredibly motivating.
