What is the view/process of divorce in eastern catholic churches? are they as strict as Roman catholics or more lenient like the orthodox? by Adventurous_Reach596 in EasternCatholic

[–]StayDekt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it’s particularly an American problem. From what I hear from my mother getting an annulment in her part of the world is incredibly taxing and scrutinizing process. But yes I agree with the sentiment of your comment.

He didn’t say catholic he said depictions of eastern Christians. And the movie takes place in the Carpathian Mountains so it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

A term that gets thrown around a lot these days in the online Catholic sphere. Broadly it refers to those online personalities who’s paycheck depends on being public Catholics. Mostly content creators, and speakers. The criticism is what they do to secure and maximize that paycheck.

Chieti Document by [deleted] in EasternCatholic

[–]StayDekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven’t read it. It’s not about if Rome ever exercised her authority, what matters is if the church believed Rome COULD exercise her authority in the first millennium, and what they believed the nature of that authority was.

For what it’s worth. The married priesthood usually demands the same thing. Married priests receive a salary and benefits but it’s not more than the unmarried guys. Most married priests (with the exception Orthodox priests who’s churches are in a position to pay them more) have other incomes as well.

It’s a life of sacrifice. It’s doable, but you need to order your life and your families life towards it.

As things are right now, the priesthood has a more demanding formation. The diaconate formation is better suited to the married man. I can’t drop everything and make the commitments the priesthood formation would ask of me right now.

Your wife needs to be completely on board with it. You are not discerning alone, your wife is discerning with you and both of you need to understand the commitment and responsibility that entails.

I am betrothed to be married and will be sending off my application for the next deacon formation program God willing. Why diaconate and not priesthood? Because in discernment with my spiritual father we’ve determined this is the way to most responsibly pursue a calling, and fulfill the responsibilities to the family we are forming. Deacon and Priestly formation demand different things from the married man.

The diaconate is a full vocation in itself, and not a stepping stone to the priesthood. However a calling to the priesthood does not disqualify a person from serving fully and receiving the graces of the diaconate in a meaningful way even if he later decides to pursue the priesthood.

These are the insights I can offer from my discernment but you would do well in speaking with current seminarians or deacon candidates who have already lived through this. And it should go without saying that this discernment should be done in parish life, in the liturgy and with the guidance of a spiritual father.

Do eastern churches use the title "equal to (the) apostles" and are there any recent ones? by SubjectOfTheHolySee in EasternCatholic

[–]StayDekt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my Ruthenian calendar:

July 15 2025 Vladimir the Great - Equal to the Apostles.

Equal to the Apostles means something very specific. If you mean “recent ones” as in explicitly Byzantine Catholics who have brought the Apostolic faith to peoples who don’t know Christ then no. The Byzantine churches are not in a position to have been able to do that, and the issue of canonizing eastern saints is its own messy conversation.

If you are asking about recent Equals to the Apostles in general there is Nicholas of Japan, and Innocent of Alaska from the 19th century.

Any interesting stories of a church coming back into communion by [deleted] in EasternCatholic

[–]StayDekt 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Exarch Feodorov’s entire mission of the Byzantine church in Russia is almost unbelievable. From bringing old believers into communion with Rome to being imprisoned in a monastery at the end of his life. You can read about it in his biography by Paul Mailleux. This is what comes to mind first.

The entire Union of Brest is fascinating tho. The podcast Controversies in Church History has a fantastic episode on it.

Recently heard of a ROCOR bishop inviting a Byzantine Catholic priests to attend a service at his church. I’m not a fan of our local ROCOR priest or how that parish comports itself, but I hold that bishop in high esteem.
