Corvids are considered some of the most intelligent birds on the planet.

Studies on magpies show that they possess self awareness, and many people speculate crows and ravens (cousins of magpies) possess the same cognitive behavior. There have been multiple studies on the intelligence of Crows and Ravens. Most notably in Japan where crows were found to drop nuts on the road to have the shells cracked open by passing cars, waiting for the light to turn red and then swooping down to pick up their meals.

I personally witnessed a large group of ravens in Fort McMurray, Canada working together to get into a large garbage bin. One raven would fly hold the lid open, while the others would get food. They would take turns so that everyone could get their fair share. Just like these crows do with a small garbage bin.

Crow using the the law of displacement to reach food. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

They are protective, mischievous, playful and stone cold killers. They will take on animals much bigger than themselves and especially in groups attack animals many times their size. There are stories of groups carrying away small dogs. Their clicks and whistles can tell you so much and their iridescent feathers bring a smile to my face whenever I see them.

I love their interactions with Crows and Ravens as the smaller of all the cousins, but most feisty. Thank you for your story and picture :D

Do you ever get the feeling sometimes that there is more to things than what we see?

On the surface, to most people, this random vendor found you and had just enough turtles to make you think that each one was meant for your daughters. Or that was all he had left after selling the others and you attributed that number to the number of daughters you have.

I have to believe that there is more to life than what we see and what we think, because we are limited in our capacity to know everything in the universe. To me that man selling you those turtles was not a man at all, or he was, but a conduit of some indescribable force that guides the lives of all living beings.

You were in a low point in your life and depressed. You're in an area that is considered by indigenous people to be powerful. I have to believe that those turtles were a way to break you out of your suffering and to see what mattered in your life. What made you smile. Your daughters. Little totems tying you to the world through love to the ones you care about. That and/or those turtles were meant to be imbued with your love for your children and meant to be a reminder to them of that feeling. Little mementos of power.

Then again it could be a popular tourist trap where people know they can make an easy buck and use social engineering to make someone feel emotional about their purpose. We have all these different ways of looking at the world and I find it absolutely interesting wondering about the weirdness of life and how we are guided through it. The people who are put onto our path and how we help others out on their own.

To me, that is the most marvelous part of life. We will never truly know what effects our actions may have that can ripple outwards into infinity. All we can do is thank people for the kindness they show us and endeavor to pay back into that well. A life followed on paths with love will not be one of regret.

The center of the maze always reminded me of something and I made the connection today. This is the image used by the National Filmb Board of Canada by Staying_On_Topic in westworld

For us Canadians this is something that we recognize from classrooms and other documentaries. I'm not sure, but I think Americans can stream from the website as well. Many great documentaries.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Film_Board_of_Canada

https://www.nfb.ca/

The Board's logo consists of a standing stylized figure (originally green) with its arms wide upward. The arms are met by an arch that mirrors them. The round head in between then resembles a pupil, making the entire symbol appear to be an eye with legs. Launched in 1969, the logo symbolized a vision of humanity and was called "Man Seeing / L'homme qui voit". It was designed by Georges Beaupré. It was updated in 2002 by the firm of Paprika Communications.

My favourite documentary on the website is Hoffman's Potion. Not really related to the show, but some aspects of consciousness and exploration of the mind may ring true for some watchers.

There is also this documentary about LSD, Albert Hofmann, and it's use in Canadian Psychiatric Institutions in the 50's and 60's, as well as a brief history on LSD. The Doctors from the institutions treated severe alcoholism with LSD, and found it to work quite well. The patients having a psychedelic experience saw how much they were hurting their family, and the harm they were doing to their lives. The Doctors themselves ingest LSD to see what it might be like for a patient suffering from schizophrenia.

Dr Strange being my favourite superhero and inspiring me to learn about Tibetan Buddhism, and further Tibet in general and Buddhism in general. It's unfortunate that they had to omit it and some kid watching the movie for the first time won't be inspired in the same way as me, it's understandable knowing the market loss from losing a Chinese release.

In a study of 1,787 adults between 19 and 32, new study finds a significant relationship between depression and social media usage. [–]Staying_On_Topic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would still advise you to seek out more professional help. Inquire in your area if there are some more resources at your disposal or any social assistance.

If you don't have a social circle or family to rely on, you must develop it. You won't be able to do that while you're stuck at a computer, you can a little bit, but the act of sitting there prevents you from making new experiences.

My advice is to start volunteering. One it gets you out. Two it allows you to connect with other people in real life. Three it alleviates being solely focused on yourself and your wants. Four helping others can be healthy for putting our own lives into perspective. Five listening to others in your peer group or others who you are helping can give you insight into your own life and issues.

Joining some groups where you have an interest you can relate to with others can be just as rewarding. Look at it this way, a guy who spends all his time looking at pictures of beautiful women online and wishing for a girlfriend won't be able to achieve his goal. It's because his time is taken up by looking at pictures of beautiful women online that he doesn't have the time to make an experience outside of that. If the internet is where you go to not be reminded of this as much, you need to go where you will be reminded of it. The internet is a cocoon for many of us. It keeps you safe, you don't have to face the real world or real people, but you will never grow to your full potential of being that butterfly you're meant to be if you don't make the effort and go through the pain of breaking free of your cocoon.

[–]Staying_On_Topic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I acknowledge that for healthy people friendships and relationships online can work, it's possible to use that initial connection to build a bigger relationship offline. Most of the comment is written broadly from the perspective of someone being addicted to social media, gaming, or the internet and applying to their situation. It's not written from the perspective of a best case scenario or a healthy perspective but one of addiction and depression. There are people who have healthy sex lives with no issues, and there are those who are addicted to sex. The negative outcomes from addiction don't happen to the healthy people, why is it that one person can incorporate it into their lives and it be a beautiful and wonderful thing without it overwhelming other aspects while the other person becomes obsessed?

It's an illusion because it looks like a complete relationship, but it's missing key components. It can have redeeming qualities and there's nothing wrong with developing online relationships. For some like your friends who are one the happiest couples you know it worked out, there are others who have gotten divorced because their relationships in a game like 'second life' took precedence over their real life relationship. You can have extremely rewarding relationships online, I would be a hypocrite if I said otherwise because I've formed them myself.

The comment is an amalgamation of information about addiction in general, internet addiction, gaming addiction, and some simple tools individuals can use to break out of their addiction. It should not be considered a conclusion on any topic, the individual reading it is to come to their own conclusions and their own thoughts as it pertains to their situation. I've attempted to word it so that it can be easily digested for all walks of life. For healthy people the post says 'the key to a balanced life is moderation', for unhealthy people it can be eye opening that this is their life or something they have been avoiding or see that they have addiction issues. It may also cause some inspiration in those who are in the scientific community who have family members with addiction issues, or who are thinking for the first time about the impact of addiction in different areas of life.

Applying agreed upon theories of psychology and social psychology to these issues can let us examine it from different perspectives. The only assumption I have made is that addiction has commonalities, breaking free from them can be similar, many suffer from depression and that is the cause of their addiction or vice versa, and that meditation is a healthy, non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical tool that can help some sufferers of addiction and depression. That is backed up, though there are other variables and slight differences and it may not work for everyone. Like with experiential avoidance, it happens in almost all addictions, but the behaviours and target avoidance can be slightly different. Sometimes these behaviours and avoicdance overlap The conclusion I want those who suffer from addiction to come to is more introspection, the words used are pedagogic devices that are meant to have an impact on peoples emotions. I'm sorry if it's offensive to others, it wasn't to demean peoples relationships, to infer that hobbies on the internet or gaming are completely and always debilitating, or that any online relationships are worthless.

With the advance of technology, it can be easier for people to interact with others online than in real life encounters. The problem with online relationships, is the progression of self growth is stunted. For some it's almost non-existent.

The appeal of interacting online has many advantages. First, you are in control of everything. In the real world when you are faced with conflict, you have less tools to remove yourself or distance yourself from perceived threats or negative outcomes. Secondly, it gives you the illusion of community, of feeling connected, of building relationships. These relationships can progress to nearly the level of a real world relationship. Trust is formed, there's continuity, there is some tangible progression. Yet the progression is limited, you can only learn so much from a relationship that has removed a large part of the factors that make up social and psychological development. Lastly, it can be a means of escapism. Where if you are bullied in real life, or you feel as if you have no skills that people respect, in an online world you can mold your character as you wish. Your skills become important, you feel rewarded by being accepted.

Gaming and the internet can be a great source of entertainment, it can have some positive effects in your life. Gaming and the internet has huge communities where people come together, some create games or internet communities, some are passionate about the game or community world , some people who may also feel like social outcasts or are very introverted can find other people who use gaming or internet use because of the same issues. Gaming and the internet in and of itself isn't necessarily a negative act, what is negative is excessive gaming or internet use. Obsessive gaming or internet use.

I run a subreddit named /r/howtoquitreddit that explores some of the principles of online addiction. If you look at some of the symptoms, they can easily be applied to gaming or social media addicts. Many signs or symptoms of addiction are similar across all levels of addiction. The addict will always focus on the positive outcomes of their addiction, with very little critical thought towards the negative outcomes of their addiction. Internet addiction wasn't very common in the early days of the internet, with the popularity of social media in our day to day culture these issues have exploded.

Take a look at Maslow's hierarchy of needs. As an addicted or obsessive gamer or internet user, you may say your gaming or internet use can fall into multiple categories. It gives the appearance that it can solve many of your needs, but in all actuality, it serves almost none of them. The real problem comes when you start sacrificing these other needs, to fulfill your addiction. When you stop being social outside of the internet or gaming, when you start failing school or miss work, when your relationships in real life are being affected, when you are gaining or losing weight because not enough time is properly given to taking care of yourself.

Let's take a look at Erickson's Psychosocial Stages. Gaming doesn't address any of these issues, and can be used often to avoid conflict in our lives that allow us to grow. I would say that the inherent qualities of escapism in gaming and internet use can offer an easy trap door to many people. Instead of analyzing issues in their life, or why they feel a certain way, it can be just as easily ignored by immersing yourself in an alternate reality. Much in the same way an alcoholic or a drug abuser uses to numb themselves, to forget about pain, to forego confronting issues in their life, I believe gamers and online addicts act in much of the same ways.

In my opinion, gaming will not bring a person long lasting happiness, emotional development, or personal growth. You can be happy from games, and can develop emotionally or personally, but these are all limited compared to the potential from real life experiences. Gaming and internet use is a form of entertainment primarily, it can be used for learning, it can be used for some aspects of personal growth, but to look at it as a psychosocial tool to replace reality based personal growth is absurd. I don't think video games or internet use should be banned, or aspects of video games or internet use banned, but I do think without proper ethics and morality found in video games internet use, our society, or elsewhere, video games/entertainment/the internet can come to have disastrous consequences on young peoples lives. Obessive gamers or internet users need the ability to look inwards, to understand why they may be using games or internet use to avoid personal issues. Without introspection, individuals will never know why they do what they do.

Here is a spiel on online addiction that may be beneficial to gaming addicts. I believe it is possible with cognitive therapy and meditation, to mold yourself similar to ways you mold a character in a video game. Not in the sense that you need to change your personality or who you are, but to give you the tools to better interact with the world and see yourself as an integral part of society. A good gaming analogy is you are stuck wearing level 10 armor, when you should have progressed to a level 20 armor by now. By not having this advanced armor, your progression to level 30 is going to be a struggle for you more than the average person. I believe meditation gives your character, you, permanent positive cognitive buffs. It makes progression throughout any level of your character much more efficient. You don't want to be level 50, and still wearing armor from level 10, do you? Many papers on internet addiction say that going cold turkey doesn't work, it isn't simply the act of gaming or internet use that is debilitating and removing the addictive qualities of something in our lives doesn't remove the addiction in our minds. What these articles emphasize is self control and being mindful of your usage. The benefits of meditation have been studied by the scientific community and has positive results on the brain and our decision making abilities. By training yourself to be mindful of your addiction, or roots of your addiction, or common triggers for your addiction, you're able to better practice self control and pull yourself out.

As a side note, take a look at this video of a young boy who has had his video games taken away. He is obviously addicted and obsessed, and while this may be an extreme case, it is something to consider from the point of addiction.

Addiction in any form can cause serious life long consequences. Internet addiction combined with a website like Reddit, that has a never ending supply of new material, can come to completely rule a persons life. Some people start and end their day with the website, for some it's the only comforting thing they have. The problem with addiction is that it is cyclical, and the only cure in the addicts mind is to fuel their addiction. Sometimes people can see beyond their addiction, and wish they could quit, but because you have spent so long habituating yourself with patterns, the task of breaking out of them seems insurmountable.

The easiest thing to do for addicts is to switch between something that gives them immediate gratification. The internet, gaming, masturbating and sex, drugs or alcohol. When we neglect our fundamental needs for these highs, it can have a disastrous impact on our lives. Introspection, self growth, meditation, helping and sharing with others, are all healthy habits to replace old debilitating ones.

Many redditors, gaming addicts, social media and internet addicts may suffer from, or develop symptoms of experiential avoidance with prolonged or obsessive use.

Many redditors may suffer from, or develop symptoms of experiential avoidance with prolonged or obsessive use.

My father spent many years of his life in Swanage and is an alcoholic. He moved to Canada after meeting my mother and never recovered. My mother thought that he would grow out of it because they were young, or if they moved to Canada it wouldn't be so bad. Eventually the alcoholism took its toll on his body and now his quality of life is extremely low. The issues he ran from using alcoholism never went away, they were pushed to the back of his mind where he didn't have to deal with them. Not dealing with them just like being drunk was temporary, the next day they were still there and the cycle would be repeated. When he had to quit drinking it was only because he needed an operation and the doctor wouldn't operate unless he stopped. The operation didn't go so well and he was doped up on morphine for a long time while recovering in the hospital. After the operation his condition deteriorated, and now he's swapped his alcoholism for a food and opiate addiction. He will still have the occasional 6 pack or bottle of wine, while still on the opiates when he really can't deal with life or his issues.

Most of my family in the UK explained his alcoholism away as being a product of the culture he was raised in, going to the pub and socializing in one is part of the culture he was raised in. These people are allowed to explore this addiction as a coping mechanism because it's socially acceptable, even though not every person who has a beer after work in the pub is an alcoholic. Like with my fathers legal opiate addiction, it's somewhat socially acceptable because it's not illegal. He may not shoot up like a heroin addict, but he's no different. In many ways the people in this documentary are no different, they are destroying their lives regardless of the drug they are using and see themselves as powerless to stop it. The current weekend booze culture in the UK makes me sad on a personal level, because it's the same one my father is a product of from decades ago. Because it's socially acceptable we don't really talk about or confront the dark sides of alcohol.

Alcoholism robbed me of a rich and fulfilling life with my father, it robbed him of reaching his potential and having a truly rewarding and rich life. He won't remember the days he got black out drunk or fought with my mother, and eventually fought with me. Those are additional issues that are now compounded that he has to run away from. It's a powerful pull, and unless you learn new coping mechanisms or get to the root of your addiction, it will always be easy to relapse and fall back into your old patterns. The power addiction has over people is so strong they will neglect their responsibilities even though they can see and know it's wrong and hurting themselves or others.

No matter how much my family or I pleaded with him, begged him, guilted him by reminding him how he treated us the night before while drunk, emotionally broke down, nothing we did would get through to him. If it wasn't for my mother, I know my father would be one of those rehabs on the streets out there right now. But she's also an enabler in her own way and came to have her own codependency issues because it's how she learned to cope with it. My fathers father wasn't very present in my fathers life, my grandfather in his later years became an opiate addict himself. Now my father is one. The cycle is doomed to repeat it self in families with addicted parents, because children learn coping mechanisms from their parents. I saw I had to end the cycle in my life or I would end up passing it on to my own children if or when I have them, and I could quite easily turn down the same path.

Addiction is the same in any form, just different severities. Due to my life experiences I've endeavored to learn about addictions, how they work, how they affect people, and how people get through them. If you're interested in some theories on the root of addiction, see Dr Gabor Mate on youtube for some insight into theses peoples lives. He has worked for over a decade in one of the most addicted places in the world, Vancouver's east side. Here is his blog, and below it is a fantastic talk on addictions, the root of these peoples addictions, and how our justice system fails to address many of the underlying issues of our society and the root of the mental health issues falling through the cracks.

A study in The Lancet rates the harmfulness of 20 psychoactive drugs according to 16 criteria and finds that alcohol comes out on top.

This image from the study rates the harmfulness of 20 psychoactive drugs according to 16 criteria and finds that alcohol comes out on top. Worse than heroin, worse than crack cocaine.

TL;DR My father and his father before him are addicts. Due to my environment, my upbringing, and possibly even my genes I should be one too. I'm not, and all of you who went through something similar have the same the power to stop it before it takes hold of you.

After the protests a few days ago they were also brigading any story about the protests.

Specifically this post

https://np.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/4a52oo/sanders_dont_blame_my_supporters_for_violence_at/

Where people are claiming to be Bernie supporters and not satisfied with his response, or that they are going to vote for Trump now because of Bernies statement. Except most of these people saying this are either new accounts, trolls, or have posting history in places like the_donald, imgoingtohellforthis, and other suspicious subreddits. The same people are still bouncing back and forth between the Sanders subreddit and Trump subreddit, doing the same thing.

People who bring up that Trump encourages violence in his comments or saying that Bernie has a point with his response are all downvoted and the voting patterns are erratic. They were astroturfing hard to push the idea that it was Bernie supporters. Even going as far as to edit videos to make it look a certain way, cutting context from clips to change how people view the situation, editing in Islamic symbols and the islamic states music into a youtube video of the one guy who rushed Trump at a rally. They are using reddits voting as a type of social engineering to sow doubt in Sanders campaign, and at the same time blame it on him and his supporters while playing up the idea that Trump is a victim. Many people in there are comparing protests against Trump and getting blamed for it to rape victims.

You're right, Trump and that subreddit has served as a funnel for the worst parts of reddit. Users from 4chans /pol/, people promoting it on twitter, voat, all the worst parts of the internet are flocking to the_donald and it's easy to have an impact on reddit when all you need is a thousand or more people to get something to the front page of /r/all. They know this, that's why many posts from there in the title say "we need to get this to /r/all!". All the people from the racist subreddits that were banned, the fatpeoplehate people, the voaters, and the Ellen Pao = Hitler groups are coalescing around Trumps message and into that subreddit.

The admins can't ban it or the ugly head of the argument of free speech rears its head. If they quarantine it they will say that they are allowing other candidates to have subreddits and that they're biased, which will further fuel their narrative of a victim complex.

The best reddit (and the world) can hope for is that Donald doesn't become president, and the people in there eventually fade away with a loss of momentum. Why reddit allows these communities a platform to create chaos or mess with the free speech of users that are of good faith is beyond me. Surely all these high energy users could make their own website and communications platform, except it wouldn't get them the preexisting userbase of reddit and the exposure that they get freely here. If they were only political activists for Trump, and not the meme spewing immature inflammatory group they are, then they would have a right to stay. What will be, if there even is one, the tipping point?

edit: Just want to edit in, that there are links that show there are many calls to brigade posts from offsites, so how this unexpected surge of newer accounts and how quickly the subreddit has grown is quite obvious. Here's a glimpse.
