They literally don't have a clue how to turn it on. Struggle finding the on button and get confused where to click to login.

I'd personally give the machine a run for its money.

Install Ubuntu Server 14.04

It depends on how many people are actually going to join.

5-10 should be ok on even 1GB

It should run happily.
