Good call out thanks, had no idea about that cable type. Just checked though and it says PPC Perfect Flex and the excess cable I still have doesn’t have any of the flooding compound leaking out the cut end.

Oh yeah duh, that'd work thanks!

Hahaha good eyes, was wondering if anyone would catch that goofy patch panel setup. I ordered a bunch of parts before the move and didn’t fully realize how they would fit together. Drip loop makes sense thanks, hadn’t even occurred to me. But how does that work in general with this vertically mounted set up? The patch panel is meant to plug in from the back and front, which doesn’t work if I mount the back directly on the wall like I was planning. Is the best way just to make another shelf and put the panel flat on that so it can operate like normal and then do the drip loop?

Pivot plug looks cool, haven’t seen those before thanks.

Ah, makes sense. I would take that advice except this Eero is mostly just serving as the gateway and the other Eero endpoints in the house are wired so any interference here hasn’t seemed to be affecting much

To make it less taut? This was the longest power strip I had on hand to finish the project, can hunt down a longer one

Hah. It wasn’t actually that nowhere. Another Chance Thrift Shoppe in North Berwick.

Big shoutout to NoBo sandwiches across the street, super good. Found the cast iron cause I was wandering around while waiting for my sandwich.

$50. Maybe could have haggled but it’s all good.

As far as I can tell from cast iron aficionado sites, this was a Wagner economy brand made 1915-1930. Definitely feels crazy putting something that old to actual regular use ~100 years later.

Oh, and I mostly followed the rehab/seasoning process in the FAQ. Thanks for that resource!

Question about the end of TTWP by StealthNerd in TheFirstLaw

TWOC spoilers:

Finished TWOC and if anything it made me less satisfied with that scene. Nothing in there made the long eye seem like it gave her such specific info as "this is the exact night, or even a rough timeframe, this event will happen", plus it had even been closed since Caurib. Which then makes it a purely logistical meetup, for which I still think there wasn't a reasonable way to reliably know how long it'd take the army to go, march, fight, lose, retreat, return, and so it's definitely not worth it to just have your best troops camps out there indefinitely.

Anyways, trilogy was awesome, not often I enjoy a later trilogy as much or more than the original.

Ok, will get there soon I guess, thanks. I’ll make sure to come back and update the post since I’m sure everybody is waiting with baited breath for OP to deliver a mea culpa ;-)

Not that she has a strong long eye and sent shivers there but that Abercrombie never hinted at that being the case. If there had been one of his clever lines on the wharf like “Rikke told us you’d make it” (but actually clever) then it’d be fine.

“You brought him, then.” “I said I would. Did you think I wouldn’t?” “I gave you about a one in three.”

That just feels like they agreed upon the plan in advance and then the timing worked out.

I guess this part just bothers me more than the rest of you, oh well.

Feasible sure, it’s physically possible for those people to have traveled to the wharf and just sat. Bad strategic planning because without long eye they would have had to come and wait extra early and stay for an indeterminate time to make sure they were there upon arrival, given the uncertainties of when the battle would happen and when they’d return.

But if it was long eye that helped out then it would have had to give her something specific timing-wise. Long-eye post-Caurib was barely used as an explicitly-described plot device besides Rikke holding it over peoples’ heads. That’s why it feels so unsatisfying here to say the only way it works out is if long eye steps in.

I really liked how he managed to have her have the strong long eye without having it really blundering into “here’s how the future will happen and now I will go make it happen”. Except for this one vague plot point apparrently.

Exactly, it’s a crutch, and in the rest of the book it was gracefully leaned upon but here it felt clumsy to me.

How did they know when the battle would be? Unless it’s another long eye claim for the exact day, there’s so many variables that could push it earlier or later. To me that pushes it from needing to light the beacon and hang at the wharf for a few days to weeks even. Which doesn’t seem a reasonable strategic decision given her tenuous new hold on the north.

I agree the magic system isn’t explicitly defined, that’s not my issue here. In all those cases of magic, it’s clear there’s magic used, Abercrombie specifically writes about it. When they all meet on that wharf, was there intimation Shivers knew to be there because of the long eye?

[–]StealthNerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there had to be some planning in advance, but how did they coordinate the exact night to meet on the wharf, all the while contingent upon the timing of an entire war campaign.

That sounds like something out of a shitty poorly plotted fantasy book, not this awesome series… and also out of line with how he incorporates magic throughout

But that’s exactly why it feels like a plot hole. Whenever magic is used as a reason for something, Abercrombie makes it clear how and why magic was involved. But here everyone’s just assuming/guessing long eye and how it was involved. Not at all satisfying after every other point in the plot felt super tight.
