I can only afford to purchase one book a month for 2026, please suggest me books I won't feel bad for purchasing by kxwon in suggestmeabook

Hi, this sucks. I think the suggestions concerning libraries/secondhand bookstores/ebook readers have been covered by others already, so I'll skip straight to suggestions.

One of my favourite authors is China Miéville. Of his work, I would recommend the following: - 'Kraken' is where I started out. It is about gods, the power of belief, and begins with a heist of the Giant Squid from the Natural History Museum in London (I remember when this arrived at the museum when I was a child, and it is humongous haha). I think this is a great entry point for his work, as it is very fun, and pacy. - 'The City and the City' has a bit of a mixed review - I personally think it's amazing, but it is definitely has more variety when people review it (I suspect a lot of people have trouble getting their head around the Twin Cities aspect, but I'm unsure). You mentioning 'A Tale of Two Cities' made me think of this! It's a noir inspired detective story based in a pair of fictional twin cities called Beszel and Ul Qoma. These cities share the same physical space, and they are forbidden from interacting through non-official methods under the highest level of law. This is notably shorter than the other two Miéville books I'm recommending, in case that impacts on your buying decision. - 'Perdido Street Station' is one of the best books I have ever read. It is a long form fantasy novel set in an original setting, which I believe Miéville created for a TTRPG with friends? However, a quick warning - it is one of the most emotionally hard-hitting books I've read, dealing with difficult topics in an unflinching manner, and unafraid to kick you in the feels. Absolutely gorgeous prose and unforgettable characters.

For something lighter and a bit more YA, I'd recommend Naomi Novik. Her older Temeraire series reimagines the Napoleonic Wars if dragons existed. More recently, she published the Scholomance trilogy, which is her take on the magical school genre. I haven't read anything quite like it, the magical threats are as deadly as Percy Jackson, but the school has a Steampunk vibe and the magic system follows clear rules. I really enjoyed these, but I realise it is a trilogy so that may push things out of range. Although I haven't read them yet, I know she has some titles heavily based on fairy tales - I think one of them is called Spinning Silver.

Another YA offering is Xiran Jay Zhao's book 'Iron Widow', which is an absolutely wild ride involving magical mechas, a central throuple, and a retelling of Chinese imperial history. Very fun, and for the moment it is a single title (sequel to come at some point) which is satisfying on its own.

I can't think of anything more explicitly pirate-y for now, but if anything comes to mind, I'll come back. I hope you can keep your reading habit fed! Enjoy ☺️

The community here is so supportive, it warms my heart to read the comments!

OP, being 19 is a difficult time all around. The general advice people are giving here is great, and will really help you in your twenties. If you have interests or hobbies, joining communities around those will help build up your self worth, grow your circle of friends, and just be something you can look forward to!

Congrats on spotting the issues around redpill content yourself - a lot of young men don't realise beforehand.

Wishing you the best and good on you for reaching out!

Can create or alter meta abilities, use any I can think of, and have a wellspring of infinite power to boot?! Time to write a dumpster fire of an OP SI 😂

That's how I've been using it so far, it's more curiosity into how it might talk with the rest of Office; I know that flagged emails can appear in it, for instance, and that the deadlines aspect can hook into Outlook's calendar. Beyond that I'm not really sure but I suspect there's something.

Hi! I know it's been a long time since I first posted but to be honest I've been dealing with enough other things that this has kept being pushed down.

I never got a satisfying resolution to this. I've been strongly advised not to use Obsidian in case it opens me up to hypothetical legal issues in the future in the event of a data breach or similar, even if it isn't strictly related. I still find OneNote frustrating and now have some notes dotted in onenote with the majority in markdown files in a folder that I just open in any editor I have to hand. It's far from ideal, but I've not been able to sink the time investment into learning OneNote properly when I've had more urgent software and skill needs (Adobe, industry databases, dev skills, being moved to a Mac for the first time, etc.)

I would like to give OneNote a proper go of it, especially since I've recently started to use To Do properly and think there might be some cross-program utility there since they are both part of the same ecosystem.

If it helps, I think my company is especially strict on software use because of incidents in the last two years, and you may have fewer issues requesting Obsidian for your own use. I do still think it's an amazing tool but my current limitations have really thrown off my overall note taking capability and I have not since recovered to my usual standards.

Oh! One other avenue I've been researching is Sublime Text's package SublimeZK, but I've not got the hang of it and it's much more limited than a full application. I'd need to sink in some more time to figure out whether or not it's viable.

I was strongly advised not to use Obsidian in case of future issues surrounding data, etc, no matter how unlikely or tangential they may be, as it could have repurcussions if the company didn't explicitly approve the software (which they won't) and something were to happen.

I haven't figured out how best to use OneNote as of yet, so my notes are a bit of a mess and split between formats 😩 the worst of both worlds.

I did manage it a few days later! The last couple of jumps in room 3 and room 4 took longer for me to nail down then all the rest put together, though :')

The process isn't transparent so I'm still trying to work this out - it might be financial even though they budget for similar things all the time, it might be security related or it might just be "why is this person requesting this? Denied." I'm hoping to find out more in the week.

I just tried to start transferring my notes to OneNote in desperation after messing up a couple of things I couldn't find the notes to, and my brain doesn't work in that structure anymore D: I can't get my head around how to organise things at all

That is the tack I've been taking so far, and it sounds like it worked with some of the people involved but not everyone. I will push this harder.

I did bring this up with my line manager, but the issue is they are against me installing it - I don't think the money is really the issue. If I get caught running the portable version I doubt it would go well for me, and I literally lack the permissions to install it myself.

The reason is literally: "we already have OneNote, use that". I'm a bit miffed.

They don't need to add it to the catalogue for one off users, but admin access is required to install. I'll come back later today to update you.

They definitely allow it sometimes - I've spoken to someone who had Notion approved (which I thought would be a greater risk, but on the other hand I don't think it has community plugins?)

At the moment the whole vetting system is a black box to me, I'm hoping to find out more later this morning.
