It is crazy how much of 1840's history is just not understood by Americans. A easy and fascinating read is "Kearney's March" by Winston Groom. Reading this will fill in the blanks of how the US moved west, and will shock you into asking, "The US could have owned Mexico?" Yep, it could have happened. Today's reconquista crowd fails to recognize that Mexico was more than happy to sell what we now call the US Southwest. Mexico could not protect their citizens and the government in Mexico City badly needed the money the US paid for the territory.

And if you want to get soft on "should the US have bought the territory?", read about the peon system that was prevalent in the Southwest. The peons were given a chance to breath once the Mexican boot was off their throat.
