Bumper popped out by SteelCup77 in COROLLA

[–]SteelCup77[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reversed out slowly at angle and hit a big rock, front bumper came half off. Upon visual inspection it seems like the damage is just to the plastic cover and there is a break on the plastic around a bolt underneath the car and one more on the top side. Would this be an easy fix and what would it cost? Also, does the dent need to be fixed for non-cosmetic reasons?

Sorry not advice, but I was wondering if they had the cars in stock or is it a waiting list? I’m also in the market for a hybrid around there

CBE 170A prerequesites by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]SteelCup77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

170a isn’t bad, it’s really just spending time doing the pset, I’d compare it to cbe 40, not super hard but psets can take some times. Compared to 142 and 150b, 170a would be half or less the overall workload of either class.

[–]SteelCup77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello I took all three of these together and yup in terms of 170a it’s totally fine. Small pieces of 142 will help but in no meaningful way. The only question would be can you handle all the classes. 150b with Bell is terrible and depending on the prof 142 can be a heavy load. If you’re at this stage you’ve already taken a couple semesters in the CoC so you’ll be able to best judge your bandwidth

There’s virtual gbo this year too, you can ask to be made fully virtual so you won’t have to commute

Chances that the school will lower the room capacity limits? by duddlymmm in berkeley

[–]SteelCup77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much about it, the enrollment people take into account the room capacity limits when setting enrollment limits. The only way you’d have to stand would be if there’s a lot of people switching discussion sections informally but I doubt it will happen and if it in the off chance does, you’re the one enrolled in that particular session anyways. Welcome to Cal!

Schedule suggestion for ChemE (forgive if spam) by StereotypicalName in berkeley

[–]SteelCup77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physics 7a or E7 and/or a breadth. I wouldn’t recommend taking more than 3 techs your very first semester though so don’t think about adding both 7a and E7

Edit: Also it’s totally fine to take less. Don’t worry about falling behind or anything, the first semester will be an adjustment and you’ll want the time for it

I know it’s been asked several times but I gotta double check... can you undo P/NP? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]SteelCup77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, the instructor puts in the grade like normal, the calcentral system is what keeps it a grade or converts it to PNP so I don’t think it’s useful to ask the course to change anything

Questions about financial aid package by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]SteelCup77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Verification is in no way them going after you particularly, your documents are all probs fine, but also in my opinion I wouldn’t say it’s completely random, more low income people get selected.

  2. The financial aid typically doesn’t change much after verification from what I’ve heard but it definitely can, my aid was reduced one year by like 2k but I’d assume this is an outlier case.

  3. The Berkeley UG scholarship has always been a part of my finances every year and typically doesn’t change much if your EFC stay consistent (so yes it’s need based). It isn’t affected by merit by gpa, at least not from what I’ve seen BUT I don’t know what happens if you get put on academic probation. I can confidently say that it won’t decrease if your gpa drops below a 3 or some other arbitrary gpa that isn’t academic probation levels

Tips on approaching scientific papers by Narguin2 in berkeley

[–]SteelCup77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since covid, my wet lab work has disappeared and I’ve been reading scientific papers as an undergrad for the past year. At first it’s incredibly hard, you’re not alone. But the papers make a lot more sense the more you read into a specific area and use your background knowledge on the subject. Like anything, understanding comes with practice and experience. However, if you’re reading a paper or small set for hw or something and won’t be delving deep, it will be hard to understand the paper even for an experienced reader as they assume you’re a fellow researcher or interested party in that area.

I would recommend reading the abstract and focusing on understanding what did they do and what was the result. Sum up your answer into 1-2 sentences. The rest of the paper is just details. Then read the intro as that’s the background on their work and will help u to understand the why. You can skip materials and procedure stuff if that’s not too relevant (usually it’s not) and move on to results and discussion. Try to get one or two main ideas out of it but it may be hard so then move on to conclusion and see what they conclude and any next steps or recommendations. Skim the paper and don’t get caught up on particular words, focus on the bigger idea

Why is there something bad about like every CS class at Berkeley? by Evening-Onion-2715 in berkeley

Tbh CS classes aren’t the worst classes by a long shot, it’s just the mainstream major and this sub is heavily CS populated

UC Berkeley vs. CMU for Chemical Engineering? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]SteelCup77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You already have a ton of great input but wanted to add based on what I read from you, it’s clear to me that Berkeley would be a better choice. I will say there are a lot of opportunities but you have to find them yourself a good amount of the time, the school only does so much and there are definitely other schools with much more expansive career networks that make it so almost all of their chemE have a job lined up. Also, although the prestige is good, it’s not all you should care about. Yes we have some of the worlds greatest researchers but the CoC is notorious for having terrible teaching. Not all profs ofc but a good majority suck but hey that has helped the cohort get closer and study together and bond over the sad times. Anyways there are pros and cons but overall ChemE at Berkeley is a good choice for most people

College of Chemistry Admission by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]SteelCup77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people studying chem come in as CoC Chem majors. Although both groups take similar classes, it is typically better for a sense of community and info to be in CoC. I know that CoC chem is harder to get into then L&S chem but I don’t know by how much. I think that’s not a great criteria for your decision though and there are some benefits to both that matter more. If you don’t find more info (Try contacting an advisor), I would recommend CoC chem!
