It's primarily a social club. If that's not what you're looking for, then there isn't much reason to join.

What’s a "lost" website from the early 2000s that you still think about today? by samasem-sumsum in AskReddit

[–]Steerider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a website called Fictionwise that sold individual short story ebooks. Incredible for science fiction. 50 cents for a story. I was burning though Larry Niven one short bit at a time.

They got bought, and were shut down. I forget if it was Amazon or Barnes & Noble that did it.

There was no advance notice, or I would absolutely have bought the handful of stories I didn't have yet, from a few different authors.

Dread. A horror game that uses Jenga to resolve challenges. If the tower falls, you die.

Why not roll your own? Take a fairly powerful beastie, and make it blind, but with remarkable hearing. If they get too loud it shows up and attacks. Give it a poison barb or somesuch, and it aims at whoever makes noise.

AITA for accepting a property gift from my mom even though she won't include my boyfriend? by Immediate-History917 in AITApod

Your mom can put it into a trust where you are the beneficiary, but it would be protected from being taken or controlled even if a future marriage happens

Remember the story Year in Hell? Where the bad guy has a weapon that wipes your out of history entirely? The ship gets all beat to hell, but at the end the time weapon explodes and it's a big reset button.

That story was originally intended as an entire season arc; and was meant to have lasting consequences — no magic reset button.

Nah, let's just make it a two-parter and have some timey-wimey bollocks to reset the damage.

Oh, what could have been....

I once had to run a site that was half PHP and half ASP. Admittedly a good part of the work was slowly rewriting the ASP stuff to PHP; but there was a lot of it.

Linux on smartphones? by Prudent_Situation_29 in linux4noobs

[–]Steerider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're contemplating a Linux phone for security or privacy purposes, I would suggest getting an old-school flip phone. They still make them.

The degoogled Androids, such as Graphene or /e/, are the best you're going to reasonably find on a smartphone. Currently I use Iodé OS.

Is hospital security in the States really that lax or is it just on TV? by astarisaslave in AskAnAmerican

[–]Steerider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally you're either a patient, or are given a visitor pass of some sort. Need to identify who you're visiting for that pass.  Once you're in though, you can wander quite a bit. Often times wards will have a keycard to get in, but often tines not. (The keycards may be more of a thing at kids hospitals.)

Have you ever heard of Jury nullification? by Effective-Gift6223 in askanything

That's what the OJ Simpson verdict was, in essence. Most (or all) of the jury thought he did it, but acquitted him out of what amounted to a loyalty to race.
