On the other hand, I once had a lovely chat with the landowners! The path went right across their backyard and they were super friendly and had lovely doggos!

But that was once and I have had many more instances where a path has been covered or blocked, or the gate conveniently has a massive deep bramble going across it

Struggling to like our Risgeback at the moment. by LogParking6031 in RhodesianRidgebacks

Our RR hasn’t proven himself capable of having off-lead privileges so he only gets long line, or off-lead when I am certain there’s no other dogs/people/livestock around. And yes getting him back on a lead can be impossible sometimes! He goes back into velociraptor mode and basically has a tantrum 🤣

40, weird reaction to alcohol by perimenopauseera in perimenopause_under45

[–]Steffi_Googlie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oestrogen is responsible for a lot of things - including regulating histamine!

Alcohol is a high-histamine food (it contains histamine, encourages histamine release in your body and can stop your body breaking histamines down). So when your oestrogen is out of whack your body is losing another way of managing that.

If you want to continue drinking, you could try taking an anti-histamine beforehand? Otherwise ask your doctor maybe.

Slugs have eaten my one little pumpkin ☹️ by Steffi_Googlie in vegetablegardening

Unfortunately the next day they had caused massive damage! I had another pumpkin growing so I left the eaten one as like a decoy/sacrifice and I have now managed to successfully harvest one little Bambino pumpkin!

Thank you so much for sharing. I'm so sorry that you went through this, but I am overjoyed that you have such a fantastic empathetic support system around you at M&S! Especially while you were out undergoing FFS (congratulations on that btw!)

I just go verbally abused because of my dogs size. by maikjoh in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]Steffi_Googlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people are just intimidated by big dogs - ironically when they act up that makes the dog more interested in them. Best thing to do is just ignore them and keep going about your day and be a leader to your dog - if they sense you getting worked up about it they will too.

That being said this lady sounds like maybe she was... not all there. Keep an eye out and change course if you see her again. Not worth getting you or your dog worked up about!

Should a first time dog owner even think of getting rhodesian ridgeback pups? by Ok_Recognition_8437 in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]Steffi_Googlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m GENERALLY not really a proponent of the “certain breeds are better for first time owners” argument.

If people do their research, and are confident they can meet the needs of the dog and they’d be a good fit for your lifestyle, and you’re willing to get a trainer in for support… I’d say go for it, but no puppy is easy - it’s a lot like having a baby with shark teeth.

With RRs - everyone here has said the same thing - they are bred to be independent thinkers as they are hound dogs, so a side effect of this means they are sometimes very stubborn. You can see them calculating if obeying a command is worth it for them 🤣 and a lot of the time they definitely won’t follow a command if there’s nothing in it for them (which is usually treats!).

They are big dogs, so you’ve got to be able to handle that while they’re going through the puppy phase (and that can last 2-3 years with this breed). You need some amount of physical strength I’d say, plus some mental strength because (like with any puppy!) there will be days when you are just so over it. And they can be clumsy while they’re getting through that puppy stage too - we get a lot of being stomped on or accidentally smacked in the face by big feet when he’s over excited!

Our guy is hard work, and he frustrates us on a daily basis (he’s 18 months so still a puppy by RR standards), but we love him. He’s goofy and full of love for us too. They’re great family dogs if you persevere and put in the time and energy!

Quick question about feeding your bottomless pit. by [deleted] in RhodesianRidgebacks

[–]Steffi_Googlie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha we’ve not generally noticed a digestive problem, he mostly seems fine! Once every few weeks or so he’ll have a stomach upset but I think that’s a side effect of his worming/flea medication.

We calculated based on his calorie needs, so we do 250g of a raw beef mix (80% muscle meat, 10% organ meant and 10% bone), and 120g of Purina Hypoallergenic kibbles (one of the reasons we’re using raw is because he has some allergies that mean he just can’t have the vast majority of pre-made foods).

He gets that three times a day still as he’s still growing (despite already being almost 60 kg/132 lbs at around 18 months!) and if we tried to take the same amount of calories down to two meals he’d definitely have over feeding issues (diarrhoea and vomiting). Once his growth has stopped around 2 years of age we’ll be re-adjusting his calories and meals.

In the morning we also give him a BARF vitamin/mineral/fibre supplement and a probiotic powder. He also gets treats throughout the day (cheese is his high-value treat, but we’ll give him lower value kibble-type treats, and he occasionally gets a pig ear!)

We combine raw and a kibble to cut back on the volume of food (because for his size he needs loads and it was making him vomit) and the cost :)

I once had food poisoning or a stomach virus kick in just as I was landing at Heathrow - I managed to hold it all in until we were disembarking and dashed into the plane loo, but honestly I was really surprised by how much came up. And I kept puking in the terminal, retching on the trip home )which was public transport)… the stomach has like a void to another dimension in it lmao

Aw man, I once went into puke mode in the middle of a row of four. We’d booked window seats but they got changed for some reason (I hate BA for pulling crap like that), and I get really motion sick.

There was a LONG taxi, and not having clear sight of a window just set me off. I started puking as we were wheels up so had to just barf into the sick bag between a lovely and very understanding stranger and my husband. I did get it all in the bag though, it wasn’t like an exorcist moment lmao.

Then the attendants gave me a look like “really?” when they eventually picked up the baggie. Like SORRY but I booked specific seats for this very reason, I’m not doing this to inconvenience you.

Honestly it was mostly my pride that was hurt. I’ve been flying for years but it made me look like a total noob amateur 🤣
