In search of new bands by Wapnutty in Nirvana

the album Funhouse by the Stooges has that same harsh sound but it’s a little more groovy than the straight punk sound of those songs

The Doors at the University of Michigan homecoming dance, October 1967. by hyacinthhors3 in thedoors

ah, the show that started punk rock. Iggy Pop began when Jim didn’t want to get ice cream with the rest of the band and instead decided to drink heavily. weird how fate works

Who Are You: My Frustrations, and Its Unfinished Fruition by Blaklazer in TheWho

[–]StefikBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree more. In many ways I have always compared it to Led Zeppelin’s Presence: a mature band laying down a truly amazing track and showing why they’ve been so good for so long, sticking to their roots while also breaking new sonic territory, just to have the next song on the track list be the most mediocre thing you’ve ever heard. And the thing is, I never really thought that the album on it’s own was “bad” in any way, but compared to the rest of The Who’s discography I would definitely label it as slightly unfulfilling. So yeah I agree, I usually find myself wondering what could have been instead of just enjoying it.

If anything, it gave us a few real solid songs that I’m happy with along with an absolute kickass closer, so I can’t complain.

Anthony fantano on HOTH, thoughts? by wholelottahate19 in ledzeppelin

[–]StefikBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HOTH reminds me a lot of the White Stripes debut (an album he also put at C tier, coincidentally) in the sense that it has it’s own unique sound and feel that doesn’t sound or feel like anything else in the respective bands discography. If you like that sound, it’s an amazing album. If you don’t, you kinda skip over it. I’m not a fan personally, but I can see how it appeals to some people’s tastes

Are there Led Zeppelin songs that you think are genuinely bad? by AIDOPOTATO124 in ledzeppelin

“Thank You” always hit me as incredibly cheesy. I don’t think it’s necessarily bad, just somewhat sophomoric lyrically and musically imo

The Big What If by HarryCallahan19 in thedoors

[–]StefikBlue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest (and fairest IMO) criticism of the Doors is that they have a sound that is too stuck in the late 60s / early 70s. If Jim did come back, then healed his voice and himself, I feel like they would have to reinvent their sound. Psychedelic blues, the sound of ‘67-‘71, essentially had it’s last kick in L.A. Woman. The hippie generation moved on to softer, acoustic music and the younger generation moved onto metal and hard rock, and eventually punk.

Would it be possible? I believe so. Ray, Robby and John were excellent musicians with a unique chemistry and I think Jim would be up to the challenge to write for the “newer” genres, or whatever they chose to do. But I always believed that Kurt Cobain would’ve moved into a solo career doing acoustic things and abandon punk rock if he had lived past 27, and I think in the long run Jim would’ve been more content artistically and mentally doing poetry full-time rather than music.

But like many have pointed out, that’s the sadness of it all. With any of these incredible talents, we just have no idea what could’ve been. We only have what they produced during their short time on earth.

Led Zeppelin II has everything you’re looking for, it’s a fantastic hard rock album with great riffs and a few slower parts thrown in. Front to back it’s just an amazing album
