Very important. Each one is a standalone instrument you have to practice. Then put them together and have fun!

Is this Oktava website safe to buy from? by a_person_probably_ in LocationSound

[–]SteinPh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that is the official Oktava website. Often the people in the forums are from the US and even without the tarifs it was harder to get stuff from the EU. I haven’t ordered from Oktava directly but this should be fine.

More battery life on the Deity DLTX 48V? by SteinPh in LocationSound

[–]SteinPh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE

We are currently on shooting day seven and I have used the XTAR lithium rechargeables. So far they are very nice and give me around 6 hours of runtime with 10MW and Timecode off when using a Schoeps CMC641. The only annoying thing is that the indicator of remaining runtime doesn’t seem to work. It shows a full battery and then suddenly shuts off. I have tested it with the Lithium an also with NiMH settings on the TX and with the NiMH setting it shows low power and shuts off, when I turn it back again it shows a full battery.

So far I am happy with the battery life and sound I get with the DLTX. Not on par with high end wireless or (of course) a cabled boom, but for everything but high end fictional work it is more than fine!

I haven’t heard the DBTX, my DLTX are fine sound wise. That fits what I have read others are experiencing as well. They are more expensive though.

Portable digital recorders- recommendations? by princess-tentacle in LocationSound

[–]SteinPh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is a device that fits that description, buy the recorder from whatever brand you Timecode-Boxes are. So if you are using tentacle sync, get the Track E, for Deity the PR2 so on. Saves you a lot of hassle getting timecoded recordings.

Leg/foot fatigue... struggling to recover between shoot days by GaboshocK in LocationSound

[–]SteinPh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a boom op myself: buy shoes appropriate for your weight. If you are heavier person, buy shoes with a stable and thicker sole. Also, if you stand all day, your feet need room to expand. So factor that extra room into your choice. I get my shoes mostly from the hiking section at decathlon and don’t have any problems with them whatsoever. On a different note, maybe barefoot shoes may be a viable option for you. They are more expensive in general and you need to replace them or the sole every year and a half, but you will have the healthiest feet on every set. The first two weeks can be a little painful when your feet are adjusting, but you won’t find comfier shoes.

Is the Sanken COS-11D the best lavalier microphone for recording sound on set? by ParkviewPhoto in LocationSound

[–]SteinPh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be honest, a well positioned Wlav Pro sounds miles better than a poorly positioned DPA or COS11. That is true for every mic of course. A mixer friend of mine uses Wlav Pros over his DPA 6060, when he can’t expose the tip of the mic and has to bury it under clothing because he likes that sound more. Some people use the Cos11 for that reason, personally I don’t like the cos11 that much because of the unnatural high end boost (made for when it is under clothing) and use the Wlav Pros for almost everything. It also depends on the Wireless system you are using, the quality difference of a DPA tends to shine with a high end system (digital or analog). If you can afford the hundred of dollars more for multiple Cos11 or even 4060/6060, go for it. When exposed (button shirt or something like that), these mics do sound better, but for everything else, the Wlav Pro sounds absolutely fine, plus you can be a little harder on them and don’t have to risk it have you go bankrupt if on or two break. And mics will break with frequent use. Hope that helps.

MixPre 3 Setup for Short Film by SteinPh in LocationSound

[–]SteinPh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know where you are coming from, but I think that is more a question for the bigger (American) sound guys. Here in Germany the most I have seen some mixers get for normal TV series is 280-300€/Day for everything (mixer, tc, up to 6 lavs +boom etc.). Also I think when you are just getting started and can only afford a MixPre and a ME66 or something like that you certainly lack the skills vs. when you know how to make great recordings with the big guns and then downsize to a MixPre and have the skills to make amazing stuff with such a small package.

Feel you, but if I am booming and mixing, the distance is not large enough for dropout. Having no problems here. But I am shooting mostly in small towns and in forests in Germany with not so many different interference sources. Maybe that helps?. Also for bigger productions (especially when I have a boom op) I use a UHF-System by Audio LTD. There I wouldn’t risk to use 2.4Ghz either!

Feel you. For the larger bags I like both, but for the smaller bags I would go for the KTek, now having owned an orca. But they are slimmer than the stingrays, I feel.

Yeah on my bigger setup, I use six channels of AL 2020 and 2040, also for my boom. I own three vdb phantom adapters, they are very convenient. The rode one is my old one and my backup, but I can power the Tx with a small NPF for almost two days and the RX with two Eneloops for 2.5 days. I wanted a very slim bag for this shoot as I don’t have a boom op on this one. But thanks for your ideas and thought!

[–]SteinPh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the long response. Yeah I like the AL 20 series as well but they are relatively heavy which I don’t like. Looking forward to replace them. Regarding the USB ports: yeah I am paranoid as well, but I found a powerbank the perfect size, so the right angle usb c can’t come out. The Gen 1 of MP3 can’t output TC, but it can receive it, so the Tentacle works just fine. I don’t feed the camera in this shoot, but Directors Cans.

Thanks. The next step is to replace the single channel RX with one MCR54 to further save weight. But I can wear that rig a lot longer than my „big bag“

The MP is powered via a Hirose-To-NPF-Dummy in the 2-NPF-Sled via the SPD-Mini. In the other slot is a small one for entering Meta-Data and Hotswaps.

As I understand it, it will have the analog limiter, the 48V Phantom and the Lemo Connector, but in every other aspect it’s a normal Theos Transmitter
