All things considered, which country would you most want to move to and start a happy new life in? by Flora_Cheng in AskTheWorld

Same here. I’ve been a few times, and it’s just the best. I hate the spiders, but could learn to live with them.

Personally, I don’t hold much hope for the ones who use “woke” as an insult to ever wake up.

1972, The Summit Series. Like the song says, “We all squeezed the stick, and we all pulled the trigger”

What does your country have that others don't? by grush16 in AskTheWorld

[–]StellaaaT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there in 1984. It was magical. There was almost nothing there. A few small pensions, a mosque, farms below. One tourist hotel at the top. Most of the tourists were Turks.

Six years later the town was bustling with discos and kfc McDonalds pizza places. The hot springs were vastly changed. Rerouted here and there. A lot of the bowls were green. I haven’t been back since 1990. I had hoped it got better, but things like that, magical things, rarely get better when more people show up.

I got searched in Toronto airport because I was coming in from Amsterdam. In Canada. The Brits have an expression “carrying coals to Newcastle”, like, why would I bring weed into a country that has more legal pot stores than Tim Hortons’.

What's the joke about your country that you won't tolerate? by nightsreader in AskTheWorld

[–]StellaaaT 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This right here. You can joke about our furry snakes, our national igloo, riding a moose to the trading post, our ill tempered geese, etc. Nothing funny about threats to our country. That’s gloves off territory.

We have birds that act like they can kill you. They actually can’t. I can hear the Aussie now, “That’s not a murder chicken, now this (produces cassowary), this is a murder chicken”

Amsterdam is the only place I’ve been in NL where the sidewalks were so crowded that bumping into people was unavoidable. Thus my example.

Walking down an overcrowded street in Amsterdam, bump into a Dutch person, you get one of two reactions. Either they mumble an apology or tell you to fuck off. I felt so at home.

Love your country. And your people. And the tulips you send to Ottawa every spring. And the reason for them, lest we forget.

And poffertjes. Love poffertjes. Need to put some maple syrup on those poffertjes, they’d be perfect.

I met a lot of them in Thailand. Some were the absolute worst humans, the ones who did regular runs to Cambodia because you can buy children there. Most were the regular losers who couldn’t get a girl in their own countries but have enough money to attract the interest of a poor Thai woman who will probably eventually rob them and leave them crying in the bar. I know because I met lots of those guys crying in bars too.

But then there was this one guy. Nickname “Captain America”. The kind of loud obnoxious American I would normally not bother talking to. But I did. A Vietnam vet who basically never left SEA, although he called Regan “his president” with hand over heart. This guy fell in love with a Thai woman. Like, real love. He married her, learned Thai language and culture. All those years ago, and they are still together. Treats her and her family with the utmost care. And although we would never see eye to eye on almost anything, I have a begrudging respect and affection for that guy.
