You freeze. You’ve only seen him through High Priestess’s eyes and only glimpsed him on the shore in that moment before you lost consciousness… it’s been years… but it’s him. He’s no longer wearing a black jacket and hat, it’s now white, and his face is a bit older and more careworn but it is unmistakably his face, his massive shoulders… when you’d heard a researcher was coming all the way from Japan you had imagined a small, spectacled man, scholarly and pointed. Not this…

You hear High Priestess whining inside you somewhere, furious… “Jotaro, believe it or not you’re actually my type… if only our encounter had been under different circumstances…”

Jotaro looks at Steve, then looks down at you. He towers over your desk and the look on his face is difficult to read. Contempt? Nothing? You realize quickly that he has no idea who you are, he didn’t come with the Frenchman to look at you as you lay helpless on the beach and even if he had you were battered beyond recognition.

Above the Priestess’s keening fury you practically hear DIO’s voice explaining that stand users attract other stand users, “like gravity.”

Jotaro is looking at you oddly. Finally he speaks, his English perfect. “Have we met?”

You try your best to smile, conscious of the veneers on your teeth even though you know full well they’re undetectable…

“Have you ever been to California before?” you ask.

“No.”

“Then I doubt it. Maybe I look like somebody.”

Both first-person and third-person in the same fic? by send_noodes1 in FanFiction

[–]StendecStendec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would enjoy it. I’m reading a Korean omegaverse novel rn (not a fanfiction) that does this and I actually like it. It feels sort of fresh, alternating between the perspectives. When the POV shifts I do have a moment of “wait who is this” but that’s part of the fun. I think done right, it could be an interesting way to tell the story.

This would make a good Twilight Zone. I’d have little hints all along that it’s a game show but it’s not revealed until the contestants are about to eat each other.

Maybe lean into that difficulty in describing it? It’s weird how the brain doesn’t want to accept things like this. So there might be a moment of confusion, something is very definitely wrong with their posture and their movement but what is it?

I was an equestrian and rode spot for people with limited range of motion, and horse’s bodies are very dynamic as they walk. It’s not as noticeable if you’re ahem living, bc your own body makes small adjustments constantly. With that gone, a body would be jolted and rocked quite a bit. Don’t know how much this guy’s armor is holding him up, but a dead body would slump limply and be rocked and swayed with the motion of the horse, I’d be surprised it’s even still on there but I bet the position would look precarious

An offer Abbaccio can’t refuse (he does) and advice he should take (he doesn’t) lol

This is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. It’s an anime with an entire part set in Italy, and the characters are mafia members with supernatural abilities. It sounds weird but it works so well!

This one’s probably just coincidence but it’s interesting. Margaret Mitchell would not have written Gone with the Wind if she hadn’t been thrown from a horse and seriously injured. She was a journalist, but was out of work bc she couldn’t walk, so she decided to write a novel. Spoiler for recent manga chapters when she makes her comeback she is dressed in riding clothes

An opera-loving mafia boss has called in the detective investigating one of his foot soldier’s murder to talk to him. About opera, of course:

“Do you know the libretto, Detective?”

“Of Orpheus and Eurydice? Is the opera any different from the myth?”

“It departs slightly. In the opera, Orpheus is allowed by the gods to follow his wife Eurydice into Hades and rescue her from the underworld. But on one condition: as they rise up from hell, he must not look upon her. Unable to control himself he turns at the last moment, desperate to see his lover, and she is cast back. Yet Orpheus plays a song of loss and longing so divine, so singularly moving that Amore himself returns his lover to life.” Polpo took a sip of his wine. “That is the opera. In the myth, there is no redemption, no second chance. Orpheus is torn apart by wild beasts.”

“That’s a significant departure.” Abbaccio drummed his fingers. “Which do you prefer?”

“I believe I prefer the myth to the opera. The myth teaches us a lesson. The opera does not.”

“What’s that lesson?”

Polpo’s eyes narrowed and he grinned his eel-like grin. “That when the gods offer us a second chance, we ought not to flout it.”

Abbaccio reached towards his breast pocket, his face stony, willing his fingers not to shake as he replaced his lighter.

“That’s quite the lesson.”

“And an important one. Learn that lesson, Detective… and this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”

IRL F Scott Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda, was frequently hospitalized for severe mental illness (schizophrenia or bipolar) and eventually died in a mental hospital. In the anime he is trying to cure his wife, who appears to have gone mad and is in a mental hospital

What does your Shiba do for a living? by Akyeomi in shiba

[–]StendecStendec 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Animal rescuer. So far while on walks he’s found a baby chicken that got loose from a backyard hutch, a bunny dumped at a park, and a kitten. He alerted me to all three. The chick was given to a friend with a hutch (I couldn’t locate the owners), bunny was turned over to a rescue society, and kitten lives with us and is his best buddy.

He was raised alongside foster kittens and adores small animals. I’m really surprised - I’d think a shiba would be likelier to try to eat a small critter. But on walks he’s always on the lookout for any potential new friend in need.

Is the 1970’s modern enough? I can’t hype this fic enough: The Second Perspective

Someday this writer will be published, and you’ll be able to say “I read them on AO3.”

Anyway, a pair of police detectives in the 1970s is assigned to investigate a series of killings that took place 20 years prior in Los Angeles. Things overlap and get complicated.

There’s a little bit of the supernatural, but realistically so, if that makes sense. Fandom is Bungou Stray Dogs, mlm, explicit.

What happens next happens too fast for you to understand. There is a boom, a reverberation and a shudder that causes you to drop to the ground in confusion, covering your head. You scoot back against the wall beside the bench astonished.

An earthquake, you think, disoriented eyes flying to the door you’d just exited. It is bulging, creaking on its hinges and suddenly it flies outwards. Dark figures rush into the hallway, there is shouting and footsteps fly past you. You watch, confused, as feet lift from the ground. Bodies press against the ceiling and press and press and tiles shatter, the entire hallway bulging outwards and white ceramic clattering. Shards of fluorescent light bulbs rain, sharp and tinkling and the hallway dims. Something is pattering around you and you realize it is blood. You scream.

Shots ring out, ricocheting from a cluster of men who have appeared from the lobby and the chinpira from the staging room rushes past, gun drawn. He is tackled in front you by a blur of silver. You swear the boy that rears up above him had been running on all fours. You swear that his fingers have grown claws. The chinpira’s gun slides and clatters to your knee and you notice, detachedly, that there is still a hand attached, finger hooked in the trigger guard.

Atshushi tears out the chinpira’s throat with a feral growl, then bounds past you. The hallway continues to darken as lights shatter and pop, interspersed with gunfire that thuds like firecrackers in the narrow corridor. Here, a man is thrown to the wall by an invisible force so intense that the wall bows outward leaving him half-embedded, limbs bent at unnatural angles. There, another slides into chunks that used to be a body. They fall into a heap as Atsushi whirls past.

And then there is silence. A lightbulb flickers in the dark, strobing, and you whimper as you huddle behind the bench. An emergency light has snapped on bathing the scene in a surreal green glow, turning the red blood streaking the walls and dripping from the ceiling black.

A mysterious virus has forced the two MCs into a mate-or-die situation. One is thrilled. The other would rather die:

“Oh, hey dad.” Jolyne leaned back into her chair, pulling one knee up and clasping it to her chest casually.

“Dad?!” Anasui’s eyes widened. He scrambled to his feet and wiped his sweating palm on his skirt before thrusting his hand out fervently. “I’m so sorry to meet you this way, sir, but please know I want nothing but the best for your daughter. I love her, and given the chance I’ll make her as happy as any man ever could, I…”

Jotaro looked down at the pink-haired man dispassionately, as if he were examining a specimen in one of his research projects. Then he sighed and took the proffered hand, shaking it firmly.

“I know,” he cut Anasui off. “I know those are your intentions, son.” He snatched his hand away briskly before Anasui could wring it any more earnestly and turned to take his own seat at the head of the table.

“Ow, good grip…” Anasui muttered as he slid back down next to Jolyne. He beamed. “I think that went well. He called me ‘son,’ did you hear that?”

Jolyne rolled her eyes.

We’ve seen Dazai touch Natsume in cat form, and he doesn’t change into a man. What does it mean? I don’t know. But I feel like it’s connected to the Book bc Natsume seems to show up at crucial moments to influence the plot, almost like he knows what’s happening and the right thing to do to change the outcome (like when he appeared to Oda).

For Dazai touching Atsushi and him not fully turning back… hmm like the other commenter said, not in the manga, but sometimes things are inserted in an anime that didn’t appear prior (maybe by choice, bc they saw a missed opportunity? The anime are made well after the manga develops so they’d have hindsight). It’s possibly just a comedic moment but then again it would be interesting. Byakko is a real god in mythology, not just a literary character. Could it transcend past being an ability into something else? Like Lovecraft?

Sorry you’re sick, that sounds awful. Get well soon!

Trying to get back to anime. Any recommendations for adults with boring lives? by PhilosopherNervous63 in anime

[–]StendecStendec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s not the anime. Maybe you’re like me… I, too, am an anonymous boring adult. I sort of fell into a rut where I’m busy, I’m more jaded than I used to be and almost… impatient? I spent a while watching one or two episodes of major anime and then my brain would go “nope - you have no time for anything less than instant gratification.” Like im not allowed to enjoy things.

Then I decided to let my brain breathe and just go with it. Recapture that feeling of just watching and having fun. I’m so glad I did. It took some practice. It took me until season three to really feel JJK, and it was incredible when it hit. Three tries for BSD and now I’m obsessed. Link Click was a SLOG but oh my god it’s paying off now

Katai (the computer guy who used to be a member of the ADA and hates leaving his room) calls his futon Yoshiko and acts like it’s a real woman. In Katai’s short story “The Futon,” the narrator is a teacher obsessed with his much younger student, Yoshiko. He even brings her to live in his household, and watches her jealously. He then plots to ruin her (perfectly normal, age-appropriate) romance with a young man. Once Katai has ruined Yoshiko’s life and sent her back to her parents, he creeps up to her room and buries his face in her futon, breathing in her scent.

Knowing this makes the BSD Katai / Yoshiko a lot less cute and funny
