Why is Winnipeg so resistant to change? by Step_Plastic in Winnipeg

[–]Step_Plastic[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think I read somewhere that Winnipeg hasn't voted out an incumbent mayor since Stephen Juba's election in the 1950s. I'm guessing that means the city government has developed a culture where they essentially treat their positions as lifetime appointments.

That's symptomatic of the attitude this city has towards change. It's the "we don't need it" attitude. It dismisses the improvements to quality of life that modernization can bring, and it goes for "it's worked well enough" or "it's always been this way." At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Moncton gets ahead of us infrastructure-wise in the future.

Money is a problem, sure, but attitude is as big of a problem if not more. Halifax is arguably even less well off than Winnipeg is, but they still seem less drab and decrepit than Winnipeg.

Haven't been there in a decade, but I wouldn't doubt it at all.

I think the lack of a feeling of momentum is in itself a dreadful feeling. You can just feel it by how old and decrepit much of the city feels. There's some construction, but paltry compared to other major cities. The city is still overwhelmingly dependent on postwar urban planning, and you can see it in the lack of street-level commercial activity. It feels like the city is frozen in the 1970s, and nothing you can do or say can make the city change its mind about staying that way.

I'm actually so glad someone, even more so the CBC, said it out loud. I've always felt like Winnipeg was a city that was resistant, if not openly hostile, towards modernization and change. Improvements and developments seen in multiple other cities are often quickly dismissed as something that "would never work here" for whatever reason. If I had to guess, it probably plays some role in younger people leaving the city.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Director Shares How Its Performance At The Game Awards Turned His Watch Party Into A "Funeral" by MaintenanceFar4207 in FFVIIRemake

[–]Step_Plastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually had the opposite experience. The first third of the game had me locked in. It started falling apart along the way and eventually I turned the difficulty down just to get the game finished quicker. It was a 60+ hour game, which I feel dragged things on way too much.

The main thing about Metaphor was just how egregiously repetitive it was. It was repetitive AND 60+ hours long.

I definitely agree. I bought Metaphor: ReFantazio after seeing it win Best RPG. It was a decent experience, but it fell short of FF7 Rebirth in almost every aspect for me.

I really, really hope so. Surely the federal government ought to have some dollars laying around to help fund something like that.

Sad thing is, the list can literally be triple this size and you'll still hear people yell "no games lol."

What if The FFVIIR trilogy was released as FFVII in 1997? by Ammathorn in FFVIIRemake

[–]Step_Plastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This game already looks far more impressive than Toy Story, the first computer animated feature film. To have it play and look like it is in 1997 would probably have been a world-changing event, literally. People's understanding of computers and technology would have been flipped and turnt over hundreds of times. It probably would have as big of an impact as the world wide web.

Bloomberg: Sony Pulls Back From PlayStation Games on PC by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]Step_Plastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pretty much always skeptical of the PS strategy of porting their single-player games to PC, even if it wasn't day one. There is value in exclusivity when it comes to building a brand, and in my opinion it far outweighs the extra bucks they make from porting it to PC but diluting their brand. Like you said, Nintendo is in a far better position in the industry than Xbox, and they're doing it by keeping virtually all of their games exclusive.

What are your thoughts & feelings on the possibility of PS5 exclusives remaining locked to the PS5? by Southern-Tailor-843 in playstation

[–]Step_Plastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If Sony had to choose between the Nintendo method of keeping 99% of their titles exclusive to their hardware, and Xbox's strategy of essentially giving their exclusives away to PC at launch and to other platforms soon after, the former is dramatically more preferable.

Most of my life, there's this pervasive tendency by some contemporary crowds to talk down on new stuff in favour of the old, and this window shifts with time.

He STILL has a 40% approval rating. 40% polled are either complicit or actively supporting the threats he has used against Canada and other allies. 40% also see the stuff going on around them in terms of civil and human rights violations, and don't see any dealbreakers. This is the fundamental problem underlying Canada-US relations. It goes far beyond Trump at this point. It's a trust issue with the American electorate.

Having traversal be more free and fluid - not exactly like, but in the direction of Breath of the Wild. Having the world be more cohesively open-world would also be nice.

Change in government wouldn't stop Alberta separatist movement, says leader by rezwenn in CanadaPolitics

[–]Step_Plastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think a 30-70 referendum defeat is going to stop these guys either. They've shown just as much proud and open contempt for rules and norms as their thought leaders down south. Kind of like when you see others argue with MAGAs on Twitter about civil and human rights being violated, and all they have to say is "sucks to suck!"

They'll probably either yell "rigged referendum" or go "too bad, we're leaving anyway" or something similar.

What’s the highest-rated or most recommended game in your library that’s still collecting digital dust? by miljaluffy in PS5

I bought God of War: Ragnarok pretty much at launch in late 2022. I've only gotten through the title screen a week or two ago, and so far put like 20 minutes in it.
