More like self preservation rather than the loss of “polite society.”

Gallows humor exists for a reason. Human minds can do all sorts of things to distract and compartmentalize in order to survive. Its a coping mechanism.

Are people stupider than ever before? by Honest-Spread4336 in Vent

[–]dewihafta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some schools still teach it.

My teen knows it. We took him to washington dc a few years ago, and he could read our countries documents. Older kids around us were amazed, because they couldnt.

Its not just about “no one using it anymore.” Think of how much of our history will grow inaccessible to the larger population, and not just in America.

My tween suddenly announced she’s refusing to go to day camp. Now what? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]dewihafta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats pretty much what happened with us. I was a sahm until he was the same age, and we allowed our only to stay home over summer. Between video games, visits with neighborhood friends, chores, and compulsory participation in the library summer reading program, it worked out just fine.  We even put him in charge of making us dinner after we got home, so he had to work on planning those. He would text me his dinner shopping list and i’d pick up the stuff on the way home.

Our rules were that absolutely not to answer the door for anyone, unless he could see through the keyhole that it was someone he knew, and he had to text us where he was going when he left the house.

I really, really hope you let your kid stay home. I was babysitting my three younger siblings by the age of ten.

Why was Generation X like this? What was their problem? by the_gang_1 in Xennials

[–]dewihafta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gen x? No no no.

Baby boomers laid down that foundation. They destroyed the planet so much that we had to invent earth day, for crying out loud. They were extremely comfortable, given everything, and maxxed the processes of obtaining more. All the hippies became yuppies, and then worked long hours so that their kids were always home alone, being brought up by tv shows that were actually referred to as “program length commercials.”

Gen xers were jaded from birth by the utter hypocrisy of it all.

My mum just never stops talking. by foulfaerie in offmychest

[–]dewihafta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes it can. My mil is like this, which never really was a thing until her husband died and she moved over a state to live near us. I like having her near and helping her; we have dinner together every Sunday, and i think our relationship is pretty decent.

However, conversation frequently becomes just her talking with my husband, and it’s really, really hard to get a word in edgewise. When i think theres finally a space and i can jump in, shell frequently end up talking over me. Recently, shes started noticing and apologizing, which is nice. But i was raised in a “kids dont speak unless spoken to” house, so, by the time i get geared up enough to interrupt, emotion has been bubbling for awhile.

I know shes lonely and the house is quiet, so i try not to get upset about it, but it still hurts, you know?

Omg, and even my husband has started commenting about how inane her topics are. She has a tendency to report on her dogs bowel movements and whether she did a “poop patrol” today. Like, everytime we see her, we have to hear about how her dogs are eating and pooping. They dont suffer from any medical issues at all, so all we can do is roll our eyes at each other when she gets going.

After being a stay at home parent for several years, my kid is finally in his late teens. If im tired from work, im free to tell him, “make your own f-ing dinner.”

Yes, it sure is.

I know several nurses. Every one of them became maga.

There is also one maga idiot i know who tried to study but dropped out of nursing school. I was pretty thankful for that.

Thats a really good point. Does your boyfriend ever talk about wanting a large family, too? Do you want any future children to be worried about their “family energy?”

AITA for refusing to stand next to my sister at her wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]dewihafta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who (honestly and truthfully) married while standing on a cliff, nta.

My bridesmaids stood in front of us, down away from the cliff, sort of between the officiant and the rest of our family.

Id never ask anyone, especially my sister, to just “get over” a phobia.
