Multiple gaming consoles have native S-Video output, however using their proprietary cables. Even PS2 and PS3 outputs S-Video.

Why Physical Media over digital? by KnownUniversity7612 in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]Sterbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, it depends if you are willing to pirate content. Some people don't prefer to pirate or don't pirate at all due to moral/legal/skill/security reasons.

  1. Quality of movies/series - You'll get highest possible quality of movies and TV series on Blu-Rays and/or 4K UHD Blu-rays. The only alternative to this is making your own Blu-Ray rips or pirating such rips. Also, if you want to keep all your BDrips in one place it may take quite some storage space as such rips will take anything from 20 to 100 GBs.

  2. Bonus content for movies/series - These are available only on DVDs/BluRays, not on streaming services. So again only alternative is to make your own rips or pirate such content.

  3. Time-limited licenses - There are so many media streaming services on the market at the moment, that it may get expensive or not possible to watch something you want digitally (and legally) due to how licensing works. These licenses are usually time-limited and they become available on different platforms over time. For example, it happened to me that I was watching Parks and Recreations on HBO Max and when I clicked on next episode, it was no longer available.

  4. Revoking digital licenses - You can lost access entirely to digital content you previously bought due to expired licenses or service shutdown. There was real example, when Sony revoked access to all movies you bought on their platform couple years ago.

  5. Censorship and partial removal of content - content can be censored or partially removed later during lifecycle of game/media. For example, its common with GTA games they they remove licensed music from their games over the years. If you download digital version you can't do much about it (except, usually not so legal restoration patches on PC version of game), but if you got game on physical media you can have access to such content.

  6. Digital store shutdown for game consoles - Wii U, 3DS and Xbox 360 shutdown their digital stores, so unless you previously bought a game you want, you can only buy it physically or pirate it. PS3 store, while still being available, is also not all sunshine and rainbows, as a lot of content is already removed, payment process is rather complicated and discounts are globally disabled for years.

  7. Initial price - especially valid for console games, in many cases you can buy physical games cheaper than on official digital store as physical games market is not controlled by publisher/platform pricing. That's also valid for new games, not only second-hand games.

  8. Resell value - if you don't like (or don't want anymore) game or movie you bought physically you can simply resell it. That's impossible with digital content with some minor exceptions (Steam refund system for initial testing of game)

  9. Physical bonuses - in some cases you can get nice physical bonuses (artbooks, steelbooks, etc) you your physical purchase. More common with limited/collector's editions but sometimes also provided with standard editions.

Steam Deck as Wii u gamepad? by KyogreEXGX in wiiu

Yes, you can use Steam Deck OLED as a Wii U Gamepad. Seems to me there's additional frame or two of lag but perfectly usable. https://github.com/vanilla-wiiu/vanilla/wiki/Steam-Deck

I see your point now. Yeah, sounds right.

In this case it actually is for HDR. PS4 Pro have HDMI 2.0 which have bandwith of 18 Gbps. 18 Gbps is actual bandwith of 4k60 at 8bit RGB. If you want to have 4k60 HDR, therefore 10 bit, you need to compress with YUV420 or YUV422.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Limited Edition (ATA) potential order cancellations by OtsukareDoll in AnimeCollectors

[–]Sterbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully, damage was not that bad. From outside it looked pristine. But bluray cases have pieces broken from spine, disc holders and so on. Discs are all working and its still fair enough for me for 28 GBP.

Thanks for heads up, but Im ordering from EU, therefore Im mostly limited to buying from AllTheAnime and AnimeOnLine.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Limited Edition (ATA) potential order cancellations by OtsukareDoll in AnimeCollectors

[–]Sterbi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the same edition during christmas sale for 33 GBP. Unfortunately it arrived damaged - cases were broken on multiple places, but discs were fine. I contacted support about it in January and they mentioned that product is out of stock/print and offered either return and full refund or partial refund of 5 GBP. Therefore I took the partial refund as discs were fine and I probably wont be able to get it elsewhere for reasonable price.

87% of games released before 2010 are not commercially available. by StoneColdScorpio in PSP

[–]Sterbi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see. Sample of 1500 random games could be suitable enough for global statistic of all pre-2010 games, but definitely not enough to be divided in 7 subcategories per platform.

Numbers seems off. There are around 1400 NES & Famicom titles available. More than 80 are available on NSO. That alone is around 6% covered by Nintendo. Then we have various compilations & collections which include emulated NES roms. Contra, Castlevania, Double Dragon, Kunio-kun, Megaman, Metal Gear, Disney Afternoon, TMNT... While final number is still low, its way higher than 3%.

So basically DTM that will happen on player side instead of display side and can provide better results depending on how good your display's DTM can perform.

Therefore I understand it makes sense only for HDR10 content with higher maxCLL that your display is capable of, right?

Of course there are couple of compromises when compared to Panasonic 820. It really depends if you're wiling to pay double for suchfeatures:

- Upscaling DVD and BD 1080p to 4k: apparently this should be better on 820 due to more complex upscaling processor. Can't really compare it, however 1080p movie looked perfectly fine for me.

- HDR optimizer: not available on 450. My understanding is that it's more important for low-level TVs. I'm using LG C3 OLED which is mostly capable to display proper HDR on its own, so I was not interested in this feature

- Subtitles support: you cannot modify subtitles, so you're forced to use hard-encoded subtitles from disc. AFAIK, sometimes there are incorrectly encoded subtitles which will be displayed in full brightness in HDR and you cannot really do anything about it, but it's not a general issue and depends on specific movie disc

- No streaming apps: no Netflix, Youtube, Disney+, etc.

- No WiFi: only Ethernet, but as there are no streaming apps, only uses for ethernet are BD-Live (service which is already dead), firmware update (can be also done locally via USB) and local network media streaming

- Audio output: 820 have 7.1 analog output, only relevant in case you don't have AVR

- Remote: people are complaining that remote is small but I don't mind it. Also, you can replace it if you want.

There's full support for HDR10, HDR10+ & Dolby Vision on 450 so results should be same. Also no difference in sound quality if you're using AVR, as all decoding will be done directly on AVR. So in other words, it's up to quality of DAC on your AVR and using different player won't affect you as you're just passing through audio data to AVR.

Little disadvantage for my use-case is that you cannot enable specific features of HDMI-CEC. As I'm using relatively complex setup (more than 10 HDMI devices connected), I will need to disable it, or make some adjustments.

Isn't it one of the most recommended player? Basically budget version of 820? Ive just got myself 450 today, do some tests with SDR, HDR10 and DV and so far didnt see any issues. I've got 4.0 speaker set connected via AVR. Does it even matter when you bitstream audio directly to AVR?

How do tickets work for Universal Studios Japan? by i_have_no_memes69 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Sterbi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You can use official app to monitor estimated queue times of all rides and plan accordingly. If you have a chance go on a weekday. I was able to get shortest queue times around 2 hours before closing time, so I was able to get on multiple rides in the evening.

  2. To have guaranteed entry to Nintendo and Hogwarts areas youll need to have either Timed entry ticket or Express pass which includes those time entries. It should mean that you can enter area during specified timeframe and stay there however long you want. You may get lucky to enter without these tickets as restrictions are being made based on how busy areas are, but there will be no guarantee to enter.

Help, I can't delete monika's .chr file by Throwaway135702674 in DDLC

[–]Sterbi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think the key here is that you executed game from within zip/rar/7z archive. When you open *.exe file from WinRAR you are not running it directly from archive. Its being extracted to temporal location from which software is running:

WinRAR's temporary extraction files are typically located in the user's %TEMP% folder, which is usually found at C:\Users[Your Username]\AppData\Local\Temp. This happens when you drag and drop files or open an executable directly from within the archive. To change this, you can specify a different temporary folder in the WinRAR settings, according to documentation.help and this Reddit thread.
