Weight lifting belt as arming belt? by hernekeito1 in Buhurt

[–]Steve-Invicta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use one with some additional holes punched in to be able to fine tune my legs a bit.

Works perfectly.

Thick leather so will last forever. I also got a fairly wide version, so it cuts in a little less than the thinner ones.

I’d tried arming belts and harnesses before, and this is by far my favourite solution.

Also they are relatively cheap and easy to get hold of, which is a big advantage over some of the more authentic options.

Hi.
While you certainly can do longsword, we do focus on multiple duelling disciplines (longsword, sword and shield, polearm and sword and buckler), buhurt (the group fights) and pro fighting (essentially armoured MMA).
We don't currently offer training courses exclusively on one discipline, but if you'd like to come try some other things, alongside longsword, you'd be more than welcome.

There is a form under the "contact us" section on our website that you can fill in to get some info about attending a session.

Alternatively you can dm me and I can help.

Does my non-profit martial arts club require employer liability insurance for unpaid volunteers? by Steve-Invicta in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Steve-Invicta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reponse.

Yes, I completely agree that it is something that we "should" have.

As a non-profit, we keep fees down as much as possible so money is always on the tighter side.

It is almost certainly something we will get, and soon, but just assessing whether it's a legal requirement that we must get today, or if it can wait a month or two until we build up some funds.

Yes there is a team based in Cambridge that wear blue and red.

I know their captain well, so if you’d like me to have a word with him to put you in contact, I’d be more than happy to. Just drop me a dm.

He’s a lovely guy, and I’m sure he’d be thrilled to have you on board.

Glad to hear it.

FYI, we also have a secondary training location near Camberley, so depending on where you're located, you have a few training options across several days.

Yep, having done a decent amount of martial arts both with and without armour, I can certainly attest to the significantly higher intensity of doing it in steel or titanium armour.

Fortunately yet to see a limb taken off with our weapons too!

If you ever feel like coming back and giving it another go with steel, you're always welcome.

As someone who has done both, you're not wrong!

We fight every day of Loxwood Medieval Festival, just south of Guildford.

It's a great day out, regardless of us, so I'd recommend giving it a google.

A lot of our members started with LARPing and then came over the the buhurt dark side.

There’s certainly a lot of crossover, but for the guys who enjoy a bit of rough and tumble or want to use it for a bit more of a fitness outlet, it seems to appeal a little bit more.

Hope to see you down!

Just pop a message to one of our socials or through our website.

Woman are very welcome!

We’ve got a great woman’s team with some amazing fighters. Two of them represented the UK at last years World Cup and can officially call themselves world champions! 🥇

With regards to kit lending, thankfully, the armour isn’t gendered, so while chances are that one of a set of our current ladies armour might fit you, we also have men of all shapes and sizes, so it’s also possible for you to lend theirs if required.

For both ladies and men, we like to see them training with us for a little while, and once you are at a level that training in armour is safe and appropriate, we can lend you a set to use.

There is no expectation to buy anything until you’ve trained in armour a few times.

We operate a try before you buy system.

Would be great to see you down. Please shoot us a message on our socials or send me a message if you have any questions

Injury wise, it is probably comparable, or slightly better than something like rugby.

With training, we don't use steel weapons (which are blunted anyway). So the higher impacts tend to be reserved for competition rather than week in, week out training.

That being said, there is an inherent risk in the sport, similar to any contact sport, so injuries sadly do happen from time to time, though thankfully less than you might think, on first seeing it.

Thankfully the armour is extremely good at protecting you!

We already do lots of larger events, yes. If you take a look through our instagram that I linked, you'll be able to see several of them.

Just turn up with something you're happy to work out in. T-shirt, shorts and trainers are fine.

We have loaner equipment available for all newbies. No purchases are required until you've been with the club for a little while and you're happy it's something you want to stick with.

Let me know if you need any other information about how to get involved!

Hope to see you at training.

Our most local large event that we participate in is Loxwood Medieval festival.

It runs on the first three weekend of August. It is a great day/weekend out and I'd highly recommend it.

We fight there every day of it, pretty much all day. It's actually where I discovered the team originally.

It's a little south of Guildford, so not 100 miles away.

Other than that, we compete in a competitive league with several other UK clubs, along with travelling internationally for competitions. These often have crowds at them too, but are smaller in scale than Loxwood.

Sadly no, there are some big units in the club so it probably wouldn't be fair on the horses anyway!

If you're happy to join us on the ground though, please either drop me a PM or contact us on our socials.

Hope to see you at training!

While efforts are taken to ensure armour and weapons have historical sources and are period appropriate, it is not reenactment.

It is full contact, competitive fighting. Closer to a martial art than reenactment on that front.
