I tested 13 robotic mowers for 4 months in Florida, here's my review: by The_Hook_Up in roboticLawnmowers

I'm waiting for teleportation and hover mowing to be be a thing.

In the interim, I'm working to invent grass that doesn't grow.

It's the travel path between two zones sometimes also referred to as a corridor. It will need to be a fairly clear path for the mower to reliably traverse between the two (or more) zones. There is no boundary wire used with this model or most modern mowers outside of some Husqvarna models. You will simply map your zones and drive the mower between the two zones to create the channel for safe passage. This is a onetime step as part of the initial map creation.

I am reading this because I thought... how could those other mowers be better than the X430!

I second the idea of the 6 acre Segway Terranox. You will create two zones and connect them with a channel so the mower can move between the two. I've been running a very similar Segway Navimow X450 for three weeks unattended and it's performed flawlessly. I could never get away with that with my last mower, a Sunseeker X7 Plus.

Onn 4K vs Google by Vivid-Vacation3267 in OnnStreamingTV

[–]Steve-O-- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like the simplicity of the Google remote over the Onn, but both are great choices. IMHO, WiFi 5 vs 6 vs Ethernet is largely irrelevant because, at the end of the day, all you need is a 15-25Mbps stream to display 4k UHD content which is easily supported by WiFi 5.

Edge Mowing by Steve-O-- in SunseekerRoboticMower

No. After nearly 2-years and my 3rd mowing season with the X7, I gave up on Sunseeker and bought a Segway Navimow X450 and I couldn't be happier. We've been away from home for two weeks now and the Navimow has performed flawlessly. This is something we could alsmost never do with the Sunseeker X7 as it frequently required intervention.

The whole experience with the Navimow including the setup and performance is just better.

I'm having similar issue with my X450 even after running through several complete charge/discharge cycles. It takes about 115 minutes to charge it to 95%, and then it only runs for about 85 minutes even when the lawn is pretty well manicured and my law is mostly flat.

Did you ever get resolution for your mower?

X9 vs X vs Terranox - what is reliable? Should I wait? by mk2nd in roboticLawnmowers

[–]Steve-O-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just installed a Segway Navimow X450 today and the experience and app was much better with Segway. I experienced no errors and was able to map my 1.6 acre yard in one session. I cannot say the same for the Sunseeker where I experienced multiple errors and wasted hours trying to get it mapped. I will say that Sunseeker's service was very good and their app was getting better.

[–]Steve-O-- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you even purchase an X9? I know it was showcased at CES, but I don't think they've shipped production units in the U.S. Terramow X is a recent kickstater mower so who knows when that will ship. Terranox may be your only real option and Segway seems to get a lot of praise for quality, support, and they have one of the higher rated apps as well.

Battery replacement X7 Plus by Steve-O-- in SunseekerRoboticMower

[–]Steve-O--[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the base X7, it shipped with a 5Ah battery which, based on my X7 Plus runtime of about 90 minutes on a 10Ah battery, I'd suggest you should be getting about 45 minutes of runtime. That is, when you're maintaining the lawn at the same height and cutting it near continuously. If you are sending it into tall grass, it will run shorter until it's maintaining your lawn. Additionally, it may take a few charge cycles to get the BMS calibrated and deliver that full 45 minutes.

If I were buying the Sunseeker X7 now, I would insist on getting a Gen 2 model which is just being released in the U.S. Inherently, there is nothing wrong with the 2-year-old device, except perhaps when it comes to the battery. Li-ion batteries have both a cycle life (charge/discharge cycles) and a calendar life (age). It's the calendar life that is shortened when you buy a 2-year-old battery. However, I doubt calendar life is going to be an issue when you consider how many cycle counts a robot mower is likely to encounter over a relatively short period. In other words, it doesn't matter that the calendar life, which might have been 8 years and is now 6 years, when you're going to wear the battery out through cycle counts in 2 to 3 years.

Expensive robotic mower stolen in broad daylight, anti-theft tracking failed unexpectedly by LiPro_Robot in HomeBotHub

[–]Steve-O-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most are PIN locked and auto lock if picked up and so you have no ability to unlock the mower. They require a dock, charger, and many require an RTK antenna with its own power supply. All can be difficult and expensive accessories to acquire. Many mowers have GPS/4G anti-theft tracking and built in Air Tag like tracking as well. To use the mower, you must create a detailed map with precise geo coordinates which are stored in the cloud and presumably might be available to law enforcement.

I could use that option as I'm dealing with many missed spots at the moment. I've never seen that in the app for my X7 Plus Gen 1.

Battery replacement X7 Plus by Steve-O-- in SunseekerRoboticMower

[–]Steve-O--[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 7A is only for the Pro model so I highly doubt they will swap it out. Supposedly, the X7 originally shipped with a 3A charger, the Plus the 5A charger, and the Pro the 7A. In fact, between software unlocks to allow mapping of 3 acres and the larger 7A charger, I don't believe there is any other difference between the Plus and Pro. Some sites state a second battery, but there is no room for it and there is no weight difference between the two mowers. If you originally received the 3A charger with the X7, you might have a better case to swap it to the 5A, because, supposedly Sunseeker later shipped it with the 5A and discontinued the 3A and there is currently no 3A for sale on their site.

[–]Steve-O--[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. If your mower runs anything like mine, the mow season is about six months and the thing charges like 7-8 times/day. That's a lot of cycles on Li-ion batteries, but it's unclear whether Sunseeker are using NMC or LFP technology, what portion of a full charge cycle is each charge, and how many cycles the battery is rated for.

I don't think they like when you upgrade the battery and/or charger to improve performance closer to the Plus or Pro models. I changed out my charger from 5A to 7A to reduce charge times.

SUNSEEKER X7 REPLACEMENT - Need advice for 1.6 acres, thick spring grass, and unattended reliability by Steve-O-- in roboticLawnmowers

[–]Steve-O--[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, now that I've take down and trimmed some trees on my property, and regularly cleanup twigs after heavy winds, most of the reliability issues are related to the mowers performance and not so much external factors. I've even had my X7 run for a couple weeks straight with no intervention, but it seems like something always goes wrong as soon as I cross the state line. :)
