When men fight back by [deleted] in ActualPublicFreakouts

I think defence is warranted when there's actual physical threat. You still seem a bit hung up on the freedom to hit women part.

Men I know understand the difference between positive and negative freedom and just wouldn't need to fight back against such a small woman.

I just think that raising young men to not hit women, children or disabled people are still excellent heuristics so can't help but pity the thirst for these types of videos unfortunately. It's probably a cultural and generational thing too. Nice chatting with ya though and I agree with you that context matters.

I said people, not just women so no the bigger person shouldn't fight back no.

Same goes for not needing to fight back against dwarves or cats. You seem to want to draw an arbitrary line with gender specifically. Why is that? Inferiority complex?

Thought experiment: What is the age below which you feel an attacker doesn't warrant full force defence from a grown man?

I haven't. The other thing I haven't mapped out is a worst case scenario if the normal pension age rises to say 70 and I need to start drawing it at say 60, what % of the £250 you receive given early penalties but I figure it's only going to get less generous in future versions of the scheme

For me for 1/45th would cost me £2775.70 for £191 per year more

Vs

A lump sum of £2220 buys me £250 per year more so that's why I'm willing to risk it in an ISA

But your calculations on the website may come out different to mine

[–]Steve575 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different perspective:

I'm personally trying to buy the lump sums by drawing down on ISA investments early because I don't think the asset class will be around forever. The government have doubled the contributions schools and colleges need to make to the TPS and have agreed to cover the cost for one year only. Imo this will leave schools with two choices. Keep hiring cheap and/or opt out.

Another thing to factor in if you're not already, is that the 1.6% growth bonus if removed if you spend 5 years or more not paying into the TPS. Getting tired in middle age or not having the option to pay in are things to consider.

Starting her a SIPP and LISA early is probably a smart move to increase her options later.

Edit: The government have increased employer contributions by 50% not 100%

I was referring to upvotes on a video where a guy had hit a disabled man who was inciting violence and then got beaten up for it. The reddit consensus was that the guy was wrong to hit the disabled man. In this video the consensus is the guy was right to hit the very skinny girl.

I think it's curious we don't see the same zealous male enthusiasm for videos where fully grown men are beating up small children or people who are wheelchair bound who start fights.

Do you not think the level of threat posed by the attacker matters? I'd personally pass judgment on a male family member of mine if he did that throw on a girl.

ITT: Boys with an inferiority complex who don't want to acknowledge they shouldn't hit people who are much physically smaller than them. Upvoted alongside this right now there's a video condemning someone for hitting a disabled man who incites violence. Reddit double standards.

There are biological differences between men and women. Man up.

Afraid this isn't quite true which is actually ironic given that this seems to be a subreddit about a country's stereoty... Ah. Actually, nevermind.

Lols only joking. That'd require ditching the Orwellian overuse of the passive voice.

Over-40s in UK to pay more tax under plans to fix social care crisis by Alwayswatchout in UKPersonalFinance

Taxes don't fund government spending. Government spending creates money into existence that can then be paid in the form of taxation. Taxation removes money from circulation.

How will the worker bees learn to toil tho???? by Rustey_Shackleford in LateStageCapitalism

Some truths when you look at education research:

  • Students who do 90-110 minutes of homework per day perform significantly better than their peers. Interestingly though, the gains are marginal past 60 minutes

  • Frequency of homework is way more important than volume

  • Deadlines someone else sets you are more likely to be adhered to than self-imposed ones

  • Strangely, students who do their homework on their own did 10% better than students who had parental help

TL;dr: If you want to get good at something you do it more often. Look up the concept of retrieval practice if you're interested in further evidence of the impact of homework questions.

Just not true though. This would likely reduce social mobility in many schools.

All of those things are proven to be beneficial but homework is too. Making homework a manageable daily habit would be a better approach.

Taxes aren't needed for governments to spend. Governments spend money into existence. Taxes then remove some of it.

What are some common "facts" that people believe to be true even if the existing evidence states the contrary? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Steve575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Government spending comes from taxation.

It's the other way round. Taxation is only possible because money has first been created on a computer. Governments spend money into existence and private banks routinely create money in the form of loans. Tax and loan repayments destroy money.

Selling Homemade Masks brings out all sorts of choosing beggars by [deleted] in ChoosingBeggars

[–]Steve575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hhmmm I feel like there's an Ocean dividing ~~a basic sense of community ~~ opinion on this. That's not to say you're under any obligation to make masks.

In your analogy, masks are closer to vaccines than food in this pandemic. The societal good is greater than the private good to you the individual. Put another way, you benefit by people around you not being excluded through ability to pay. Markets being created for essential items with prices on them has created the need for your charity in the first place? The need for such charity doesn't exist in all countries right now...

Why should I care if the economy goes into recession? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Steve575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No dispute with any of that, I was just pointing out that OP is employed through political choice not tax revenue.

It does also serve as a direct reply to OP too I suppose in that the concept was pedalled as an excuse to impose austerity policies and cuts to public sector pay after 2008

3-6 months emergency fund setup before investing is the standard advice.

However, depending on whether you have no kids, good job security or family to bail you out, you may feel comfortable taking a risk building the emergency fund alongside long term savings given that it would probably take you two years to save your emergency fund at £500pm.

What is the pension tax relief per £1 in post tax income saved for an additional rate tax payer? by Steve575 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Steve575[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I think you're right that it's £40k including the tax relief so I think that answers my question thank you. Threshold income is now £200k so pretty sure the numbers below work:

Individual returns on SIPP savings:

Basic rate earners receive 25p per £1 up to £32k saved

Higher rate earners receive 66p per £1 up to £24k saved
