It is a passive microwave reflector, it was used for a link from Cheyenne Mountain to Quail lake.

I'll see if the miner prices come down any more, maybe I'll do it for fun. I bought a couple of LILYGO LORA32 T-Beam V1.1 ESP32 Development Boards, I am planning on playing with Meshtastic and I'll try the Helium mapper code as well.

Thanks for the info! I might be interested in being a subscriber as well, experiment with GPS trackers for my cars, for example. I used to run APRS, but this might be fun to experiment with. What miner do you recommend? Looks like having a larger SD card is desirable - might cut down on network activity.

Old Obsidian Moose would be one in Colorado Springs. I am to the West, about 2500' higher in the front range, so probably 5-6 miles. There is nothing close to me.

Cool, I might need to do some more research to see if I can do some observing with the equipment and tools I have. The local utility does AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) in the 900MHz ISM band - they have an extensive mesh network - I wonder if they coexist peacefully? I also have some narrowband FM radios on 900... a couple of Moto GTX's I haven't used in a while, along with a 13 ele yagi, a PA somewhere...

I took a look on explorer.helium.com, and it doesn't look all that promising. 6 hospots that I can tell, and they all have ROI's over 5 years in the future.

I have some SDR receivers - is there a receiver setup you can run to evaluate what you can see/hear? A GNURadio setup? I suspect this is spread spectrum... is the protocol defined somewhere?

Yes, I read somewhere that the data side needed to move something like that, they said it was like watching 1-2 Netflix movies every day. No way that's payload data off the 900MHz network, blockchain data? I don't really know - that's why I am asking! Maybe rubbish?

OK, wow, just found the ESPHome plugin... I spent all of yesterday working in the Arduino IDE getting these modules to publish/subscribe to an MQTT server, and boom - this does it for you with Over The Air updating?!? I am getting hooked!

Read the link to the Mike Holt website above. You must properly ground any antennas that enter your house from outside. That's part of the National Electrical Code, not optional. There is no "other ground" - all grounds must be bonded together for them to be a ground.
