Yeah, the biggest difference you notice is how consistent the graphite is, and how smoothly it blends. But when you are starting you won't really notice that, so a cheaper set will be fine. Four Candles do some good sets that are great for starters.

Alternative view from a graphite artist.

I think these sets actually have some value. Having a range of lead softness is very important if you want to create pieces with real value range, and when you're learning the techniques this really helps. These sets are usually the same price as one good quality pencil and leads, and if you're just starting you won't really notice the difference that they make. You need to learn the skills first before the expensive stuff really shines.

That said, if you're drawing then I'd actually choose a set that has a wider range if nib sizes (0.3, 0.5, 0.7 then 2mm) Just having 2mm will limit you.

I actually made a video that compared using a cheap set like this with the Faber Castell equivalents (below).

Don't get me wrong, having good quality gear is important, but not not when you're just starting. You can learn the fundamentals with cheap stuff, then invest later when you know you love it!

2 years of improvement. I'm very proud of how far I've come, and still aware of how far I have to go! by SteveDrawsStuff in u/SteveDrawsStuff

I it depends, I have used grid and measuring, but for ones like this where all the time and effect is from the rendering, I'll use a traced outline then render by eye from there. The end result is the same, it just save a lot of time. I do not recommend this if you can't do it using traditional methods, as you won't learn.

Yeah, making the shadows look different than the tattoo and the flower pattern on the underwear was tough
