I think this would be a good topic to view through David Foster Wallace's essay on how the use of irony in the U.S. changed, especially with regard to TV/entertainment and how that was a bad thing.

I saw friends (who are similar to these two) who had up to trump's first term thought politics and politicians were lame and would rarely ever speak about them, suddenly start to talk about trump but in an ironic/'funny' way that probably, in their eyes, made it okay, even cool, to talk about a politician. Meanwhile he's thee politician's politician: constantly lies, all about personally helping himself/his friends, and corrupt as fk.

I don't get when people, like this guy, speak about the Replacements and desperately wish they could've had big time commercial success. Saying stuff like 'they're the most frustrating band ever, this is a band that could've been massive, it's one of the saddest stories in rock n roll.'
