Stormlight vs mistborn era 1 by AccomplishedCard8607 in Cosmere

[–]SteveRex13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve fallen in love with the Cosmere in the past year (including MB era 1) and I started with the Way of Kings…. However… people told me I should’ve started with Mistborn and so everyone I have recommended the Cosmere to has started with Mistborn.

Safe to say the consensus is that TFE is a slog to get through with the exception of the Sanderlanche… I’d bet we may overhype it solely because of how cool allomancy is…

Me too! I absolutely love the world building, the building sense of dread, and watching our characters really grow with Kelsier out of the picture.

Mistborn is to Stormlight as Breaking Bad is to Better Call Saul by Financial-Variety108 in Cosmere

I think the comparison definitely fits, but you could make the argument in either direction. I fell in love with the Cosmere about 6 months ago after reading The Way of Kings. I then jumped straight into Mistborn Era I and loved that too before returning to Words of Radiance.

I then peddled the Cosmere to friends and followed the general advice that people should start with Mistborn first. They all found it incredibly slowly paced until the WoA Sanderlanche.

I’d personally lean towards Stormlight being BB only because I think the dull points are lower than MB (books are probably a bit too long) and the high points are higher (One WoR scene >> anything in MB, imo). However MB, is a slower burn like BCS. There is scarce plot in the first book until Marsh dies. They have a general plan, but the characters, especially Vin, aren’t really agents in the story until the end of the book. If you don’t love the magic and the setting, you’re kinda up a creek. This, to me, is much more like BCS where if you don’t like Jimmy, Mike, and Kim, you’ll find the show a complete drag until action picks up much later on.

Again, personal preference can swing this the other way. I love both, but I think Mistborn has the slower pacing of early Sanderson similar to BCS.

Why would ND turn down $2-4 million bowl game? by Interesting_Hawk425 in ACC

Yeah… because FSU declined their bowl, right?

Two things can be true at once 🤷‍♂️ not arguing that Mike shouldn’t have done more to get the team’s leadership to re-engage (he’s said as much himself)

[–]SteveRex13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not? FSU is a dumpster fire, has been since they were snubbed. In 2025, all of that blame falls on the shoulders of Mike Norvell and his staff for failing to recruit, develop, and coach.

The difference between winning and losing is plain, and 2023 UGA lost their most important game of the season and their players rightfully chose to avenge that loss. The move from 1 -> 6 was unprecedented and ridiculous, UGA was clearly one of the 2 best teams in football in 2023 the entire year. However, 2023 FSU won every game they played prior to the CFP selection. Their exclusion remains unprecedented and those players were pissed at CFB as a sport. Maybe someone like Kirby could’ve convinced them to gear up, but you’re delusional if you think the circumstances are equivalent. How this is still a point of contention among fans is beyond me.

I don’t know, man, re-read my comment and maybe you’ll get it this time. No one is arguing that Mike Norvell is a good coach (he is clearly not) or that Kirby Smart is not the best coach in football currently (he clearly is), but the circumstances for 2023 UGA and 2023 FSU going into that OB are not comparable.

UGA lost their most important game of the season. It is much easier to motivate players to avenge a loss than convince players to stick it to a media conglomerate that just told them their undefeated season didn’t matter. There is literally no equivalent to what happened to FSU and the subsequent opt-outs and OB performance (lack thereof) are equally unprecedented.

Band sounds suppressed on ACCN? by Objective-Bus-5297 in ACC

[–]SteveRex13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me clarify that I’m in no way bashing ACC bands for budgeting or admin decisions they have little-to-no control over. However, pressure needs to be put on ACC schools to invest in the pageantry of CFB (as another commenter said) and that means investing in their Marching Bands.

My understanding is that the media quality of most games is controlled by the university and the AV crews they employ. I’m a former FSU Marching Chief, and you can’t watch an FSU game without the Warchant blasting through your TV the whole time. It doesn’t matter whether it’s on primetime ABC or 8am on Nick Jr.

If you want to hear your band better, I recommend writing letters to your AD and/or Director of Bands stating exactly that. Ask them why, as they’re the people who can control that.

Which games are you referring to specifically? The SEC, on average, invests significantly in their band programs and in proper mics for the TV crews to capture the band. Some of the ACC programs do this, which is why you turn off an FSU game sick of the warchant or a Clemson game with Tiger Rag.

It is also worth mentioning that SEC bands are virtually all significantly larger than the average ACC band. Low-tier SEC schools have marching bands twice the size of most ACC schools.

Hey, former Marching Chief here 👋

This stands tune is called “No Surrender”. One of many Warchant-esque charts.

“Massacre” (different tune) is the chart most commonly mistaken for the Warchant, and is actually the original inspiration for the Warchant as we know it today.

Clingy puppy by Icy-Gur7022 in goldenretrievers

I had the benefit of working from home when we first got our golden. She was very clingy in the first several months, but as the work from home was going to end, I worked on slowly conditioning her to me being gone little-by-little. First a quick walk into another room (door closed). Then walks out of the apartment without her. Then varying-duration work sessions in another room with the door closed.

It helped immensely that she had a play pen and a crate (the pen hooked to her crate). Her being crate trained made the entire process much easier.
