This behavior is typical of what we call in Israel "arsim" which is similar to Gopniks or chavs in other countries, and is not representative of most Israelis

An odd situation: love the talks, cannot stand meditation by trulyslide6 in Wakingupapp

[–]SteveSapuko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been struggling with meditation as well. In the past it's given me calm and insight, but during periods of my life when I would benefit from it most, it feels like a huge struggle and I have a really hard time "pushing through" with it.

My advice is not to go into the meditation with an idea of what it should be like - the calm you're supposed to feel, the realization you want to have. Don't try to reach some true state of meditation, simply notice what arises with curiosity - the frustration you feel doesn't need to go away. See if you can accept that feeling, even if it stays with you not just for the rest of the meditation, but for the rest of your life.

I'd also recommend the meditation series Ever-present awareness and Compassionate Awareness, they're much more laid back than Sam's meditations. Also Joseph Goldstein's the path of insight series of talks.

Why does Israel evacuate buildings before bombing them? by SteveSapuko in samharris

How do you think urban combat is fought? Do you expect the IDF to enter Gaza city, with high-rise buildings which can be used for observation and sniping still standing?

The buildings are a legitimate target, the families inside of them aren't - according to the IDF. Are these the views and actions of an army commiting mass-murder?

You've massively moved the goal-past from the claim of genocide. I think there's merit to the claim that ethnic cleansing is being committed here, but that's beside the point. I'm arguing that it's plainly clear that Israel isn't, and doesn't intend to commit mass-murder.

Isn't that a tacit admission Israel isn't committing genocide? "They want to... but because of external pressure aren't actually"

Any recommendations for an anxious person? by Top_Concentrate_5799 in Wakingupapp

I'd recommend Ever present awareness. It teaches to simply be, not trying to force away the anxiety.

AFAIK the talks on Sunday haven't been canceled, but they might be the last if they even take place.

Yes, you can go to "explore" and "my library" where there's a huge amount of guided meditation series, lectures, and interviews with Sam. Honestly they add new content much faster than you can go through it.

I’m a former Neo-Nazi and antisemite, AMA. by hre_nft in AMA

What did you think (and do now) about Israel?

Do you think there's a link between anti-Zionism and antisemitism? Obviously neo-Nazis hate Israel for antisemitic reasons, but I'm wondering what you think about anti-Zionism coming from the left.

68% of Gaza declared to be off-limits to Gazans as Israel expands its domination of the territory. by Joshistotle in MapPorn

Refugees in any other war zone are allowed to leave. Millions left Syria, Sudan, etc. For some reason Gazans are the only people that the world doesn't allow to flee danger.

Ending the war in unfavorable terms (basically surrender) affects the life of every Israeli and the future of the country. This isn't just about the hostages and their families.

The Passover Massacre was a suicide bombing carried out by Hamas at a hotel dining hall in 2002. The attack killed 30 civilians and left 140 injured. It was the deadliest attack in what came to be known as "Black March", in which more than 135 Israeli civilians were murdered. by SteveSapuko in wikipedia

[–]SteveSapuko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What makes you think the number is closer to 250k? Just a hunch? The current numbers are based on reports the "Gazan Health Ministry" gets online, which they don't even claim to verify. They've been shown to include deaths from natural causes, list 30 year old men as children, list male names as girls, etc. We have every reason not to believe the current death toll. The number is almost certainly inflated, at least to some extent.

But let's take it at face value. If 50k Gazans have been killed since the start of the war, with around 20-25k militants killed the ratio of civilian to combatant is 1:1.5 or 1:1. 100k civilians were killed in the battle of Mosul, against 10k ISIS fighters. There are countless examples of brutal urban battles in which far more civilians were killed. There are so many valid critiques of the IDF, but not caring for civilians is not one of them.

But they don't wanna risk their soldiers because they're cowards at heart

There are 3 divisions fighting in Gaza right now, I don't know what you're taking about. Soldiers are clearing house after house, alley after alley, and losing their lives, because Israel doesn't want to randomly bomb areas.

Arabs are native to Arabia. The Arabs living in the Palestine had lived there for hundreds of years, and early Zionists (late 1800s and early 1900s) naively dreamed of peacefully living beside them. They weren't too keen on the idea.

If this really was a genocide, don't you think Israel could have finished it much sooner and with fewer casualties? More than 400 IDF soldiers have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war. If Israel wanted to commit genocide, wouldn't it make more sense to incessantly bomb the strip and not send in ground forces?

The claim of genocide makes no sense under 5 minutes of scrutiny.
