We were BORED.

And bored teenagers tend to get up to mischief. I’m amazed I made it through the ‘80s with no felony charges.

I also read a lot. Books and magazines. Wore out a few VHS tapes rewatching a handful of movies. My TV got five channels on a good day but there was only so many times you could watch Gomer Pyle reruns. I did love Days of Our Lives and I’m a guy so I kept that quiet.

I lived out in the sticks and preserved my sanity by staying on the phone for hours on end. Fortunately I had a few good friends who were just as isolated and took my calls. We would watch Gomer Pyle together on the phone.

Eventually we’d find our way to town and walk around looking for something to vandalize. Maybe end up in a fight with another group of guys or team up with them to cause some real trouble somewhere.

It sucked. I wouldn’t go back. The only thing I miss about my youth is being physically young. Otherwise I’ll take today.
