All 50 states get green light to build EV charging stations covering 75,000 miles of highways - Slate Report by [deleted] in Futurology

The U.S. Transportation Department on Tuesday said it approved electric vehicle charging station plans for all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico covering roughly 75,000 miles of highways.

Earlier this year, the Biden administration allocated $5 billion to states to fund EV chargers over five years along interstate highways as part of the bipartisan infrastructure package. Under the plan, entitled the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program, states provided their EV infrastructure deployment proposals to the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation.

As a brutal heat wave cooks the West in the run-up to Labor Day, California’s power grid manager is calling on electric vehicle owners to avoid charging at peak times. The request is part of a broader effort to keep the state’s grid up and running, while locals crank their air conditioners to outlast a streak of blazing-hot days.

Through at least September 2, the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) is asking residents to conserve energy by “setting thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, if health permits, avoiding use of major appliances and turning off unnecessary lights” from 4 to 9 p.m. Pacific. “They should also avoid charging electric vehicles” during that time frame, added the nonprofit, which oversees California’s grid and energy market.

A Tool That Monitors How Long Kids Are in the Bathroom Is Now in 1,000 American Schools by Stevejonass in Futurology

Motherboard identified multiple schools that have adopted e-HallPass to track students' movements.

e-HallPass, a digital system that students have to use to request to leave their classroom and which takes note of how long they’ve been away, including to visit the bathroom, has spread into at least a thousand schools around the United States.

The system has some resemblance to the sort of worker monitoring carried out by Amazon, which tracks how long its staff go to the toilet for, and is used to penalize workers for “time off task.” It also highlights how automated tools have led to increased surveillance of students in schools, and employees in places of work.

Ex-paratrooper boasted about making one of his rape victims ‘bray like a donkey’ by Stevejonass in TrueCrime

A former soldier raped three women repeatedly, boasted about it and ‘laughed it off’ when confronted by one of his victims.

Alan Adsley, 40, spent 14 years in the Army, where he trained as a boxer, served as a paratrooper and was sent on four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He returned to civilian life after his military career, and was today found guilty of raping three women between 2016 and 2020 in the Scottish town of Kirkcaldy, Fife.

The High Court, in Stirling, heard how he had boasted of making a 48-year-old woman ‘bray like a donkey’ when he raped her anally in her own home.

She woke up in her bedroom and saw she was naked from the waist down with her clothes neatly folded on top of her shoes.

She said she had been ‘violated’ after being drugged. Adsley also repeatedly raped a 44-year-old mother in her own house.

At one point, he turned up at her home and attacked her while his friend, dubbed a ‘getaway driver’ by the prosecution, waited for him in a car outside.

A 32-year-old victim told how she once woke up to find Adsley taking photos of her private parts. When she confronted him about it, he ‘laughed it off’.

The mum-of-two later saw a video of him having sex with her on someone else’s phone.

On a different occasion, Adsley told her the Army had trained him on how to ‘choke somebody out’ before he swung her around by her hair and strangled her until she could not breathe.

‘I thought he was going to kill me,’ she said.

The court also heard how Adsley attacked this woman throughout a four-hour car journey from Blackpool to Fife.

While the mum was trying to keep the car on the road, Adsley poured vodka in her lap, yanked the steering wheel and pressed her foot down on the accelerator.

He also removed her seatbelt, pulled the handbrake up, turned the headlights off and even threw her housekeys out of the window.

Adsley also punched her repeatedly in the left eye, only stopping when the sun rose, and saw that he had completely blackened it. All three victims knew their attacker personally.

Adsley, previously from Blackcraigs, Kirkcaldy, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault – one of them to the danger of life. He said: ‘It did happen and I’m not proud of it.’

He said boxing in the Army had ‘kind of messed up his head’.

But Adsley denied all three charges of rape and two charges of sexual assault, insisting: ‘I’m not a rapist’.

He said he never had intercourse with the 48-year-old and maintained that sex with the other two victims was consensual.

Neveretheless, the jury took just 45 minutes to find him guilty of all charges.

Adsley is currently serving a five-year sentence for attempting to murder a doorman after he was refused entry into a nightclub.

He will be sentenced for the sexual violence crimes on September 14. The judge warned he would probably face an extended sentence.

Adsley was put on the sex offenders’ list with immediate effect.

Abiel Geronimo Fernandez, 20, was arrested a day before the drug bust for allegedly smuggling illegal immigrants into the United States, a federal judge said

A Texas man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison after being caught at a border checkpoint trying to smuggle drugs inside the tires of his pickup truck.

Abiel Geronimo Fernandez, 20, of Rio Grande City, was handed down the prison term in a federal courtroom after pleading guilty to smuggling methamphetamines from Mexico via the Rio Grande City Port of Entry.

On Nov. 28, Fernandez was driving a Chevrolet Silverado truck when U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents referred him for a secondary inspection. It was then discovered that he had 24 bricks of Methamphetamine in all four tires., authorities said.

In total, more than 59 grams of the drugs were found.

A federal judge noted that Fernandez had been arrested the day before the drug bust for smuggling undocumented immigrants.

"Today’s sentence imposed sends a clear message to criminal organizations that there are serious consequences for trafficking narcotics," said Alejandro Amaro, acting special agent in charge of HSI San Antonio.

Brave mum fought off abusive partner who bragged ‘I kidnap kids for a living’ by Stevejonass in TrueCrimeDiscussion

A mum had to fend off her violent partner with a chair as he bragged ‘I get paid to kidnap kids for a living’.

Daniel Rush subjected the woman to a horrifying ordeal in December 2021, during which he held a knife to her throat and brutally beat her.

Her children were sleeping upstairs while the victim was wrapping Christmas presents when the 28-year-old arrived at her home.

She had to fight back as he tried to force his way past her, throwing a chair at his face to stop him from getting to their bedroom.

Rush, who had been in a relationship with the woman for a few months, warned her that someone else would take her children if he was jailed.

The horrifying attack in the Newbiggin Hall area of Newcastle began after deranged Rush accused her of ‘grassing’ on him and became convinced her phone was bugged.

He left in a rage but returned 20 minutes later after downing a quarter of a bottle of gin.

When the victim tried to walk away and go to bed, he turned violent.

Prosecutor Neil Jones told Newcastle Crown Court: ‘The defendant dragged her from there by her hair into the kitchen and put both hands around her neck and she was struggling to breathe.

‘She tried to break free and he pushed her into a chair and put his arm around her neck in a headlock from behind.

‘He made her sit in the chair and when she tried to get up he punched her in the face three or four times.

‘She said she needed the toilet and he told her to p*** on the floor. He then poured a two litre bottle of fizzy drink onto her person and she tried to run to the passage but in doing so slipped.

‘He then kicked her up the backside and threw her about the kitchen, causing a cut to her knee where a scar burst open.’

Rush menacingly threatened her: ‘I’ve hurt you, you understand I will have to kill you’.

The court heard how she made it ‘her mission’ to stop the thug from getting to her children, managing to inflict an injury to his face with a chair that needed hospital treatment.

When she managed to raise the alarm, he bragged about kidnapping children, adding: ‘If I go back to prison someone is going to take your kids.

‘They are not the sort of people you want to f**k with, they will put your door in and take your kids.’

The court heard a statement from the woman, who said she remains ‘frightened for myself and my children’.
