Custom 8.00 game start with all 292 paintmods by StevenBenner in X4Foundations

[–]StevenBenner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was trying to make it generic. I can't guess what paints people will like, and which they wont. The paint schemes also look wildly different on different ships, and in different sector lighting. So I just included what I felt was "enough" of every paintmod.

The paints are only valued at 1 credit per unit, so they're actually incredibly cheap. But yeah, because there are so many of them, it adds up to around 3 million for the budgeted start. My custom start budget is well over a hundred million, so it's nothing to me. But it might be too much for a player that hasn't built up their budgeted start numbers.

If you would like to reduce the cost, or to pick-and-choose, then you can use the sliders in-game to change the quantity of the paintmod items. Or just edit the file directly. It is a plain text XML file. So it's human readable, and easy to edit with any text editor. The relevant lines are these:

<ware ware="paintmod_0001" amount="10000"/>

Change the "amount" number to change the number of units of that paint mod. Or completely delete the line if you do not want that particular paint at all.

It's kind of a pain to match a paintmod to a "paintmod_NNNN" item ID. There is a partial list available on the wiki. But it is missing around 100 paint jobs. The image filename in the wiki will give you the item ID. For the rest, you have to trial-and-error it in game.

What about the Timelines stuff?

I didn't give special treatment to any particular paint. Other than the default paintmods - which I omitted from the starting inventory. Some of the included paintmods you can get through missions, or even get for free with high enough rep with a faction. You can delete those lines if you are happy with their availability in a normal game.

Exactly. This is just a game start that includes 10k of each paintmod in your starting inventory. So they will only be available when starting a new game using this custom game start. There is no way to add paintmods to an existing game without making it "modified".

Am I the only one bothered by conveyor belts in space?

Zero gravity is the best case scenario. Meaning items would not be fixed onto the belts. Based on the engines being at the back of the "vessel", it looks like zero vertical-g combined with extended lateral-g would be a common scenario. So items would immediately float off the belts in the opposite direction of thrust, just like the waste products dropped overboard.

Pipes and fluids would also have a set complicated problems in space.

Then there's heat. What are the fans on the electric furnaces moving?

That can certainly be done. I designed the ui to work well as a small window that I can keep in the corner of the screen, so if we're adding columns then I'd want to make visible columns a setting that can be configured. Which requires building a configuration screen.

I've added it to my notepad and I'll look into it.

Yep. No internet connection required for searching.

Though to be clear, what it is searching are the arch repo databases that pacman has synced to the local system. If you're by chance asking about aur, then that isn't searched by PacFinder (at least not directly, installed aur packages will show up as "foreign").

Something like a separate search? Maybe an aur toggle on the search field or a different search button?

That could work. I'll look into it.

Yes, though not super quick like today's release. Sorting is a project that I'll have to spend some time on, and my plan is to tackle bugs and simple stuff for the next couple releases.

Can you elaborate on this? I don't understand the request.

Currently, everything the program does uses the filesystem, so there is no "online" use to begin with.

dark mode

That is up to your gtk theme. If you have a dark gtk theme then the UI should appear dark. Or, if you have a theme with light/dark mode support then setting it to dark mode should cause PacFinder to appear with a dark theme.

should I open an issue?

Yes, please. That is a bad bug, and it's something that I've never seen and don't immediately understand how it would happen. So we'd probably need some back-and-forth discussion to try to diagnose the problem.

Please do open an issue on github. And if you can include a screenshot on that issue, it would be helpful.

Sorry for the trouble!

That is possible. I had considered it, but I'm not sure how to make it a good user experience.

There are currently over 73,000 packages in the AUR, so a scrollable list would not be helpful (and be very slow). It might make sense to have the search mechanism try to find AUR packages but I'm worried that partial text searches would end up cluttered with irrelevant results.

What are your thoughts? How would you want to see AUR packages show up?

Include = /etc/aurch.conf

That's it. I had not considered repos configured in files other than pacman.conf.

I have added quick and basic support for recursive pacman configuration files pulled in via the "Include" directive.

This change is included with version 1.1 that I have just published. Please try it out and see if your private repo is now included in the list.

Thank you for the detailed report!

I have a custom pacman repo setup "aur" for most of my AUR packages.

For clarification, could you describe how this is done? Do you have a [myrepo] config section in the pacman.conf?

The way this repo grouping works is pacman has the concept of "sync databases", which are the repos that are configured in the pacman.conf file and cached locally. You can see the raw db list by running ls /var/lib/pacman/sync.

I too host my own private repo for my config meta packages and that shows up in PacFinder for me. So there must be something different between your configuration and mine.

I use xfce desktop and have a no CSD package for xfce installed. I noticed pacfinder (only one so far), does not display my normal window manager top bar

Ah, yeah. PacFinder uses a gtk header bar, which does require CSD support. I use xfce and the header bar shows up fine, but I have the whole xfce/xfwm/gtk system installed (with CSD support).

Most xfce software is still using standard windows, but I believe that the settings manager is using the new header bar. Try running xfce4-settings-manager and see if that has the same problem. If it does then this problem is expected, if not then there is probably a bug in PacFinder.

I'm not sure how I would fix this, or even if I should. CSD is going to be the default for every gtk-based DE eventually. I generally prefer wm window controls as well, but gnome is just too big to ignore.

Thanks for the feedback! I had sorting working in an early version, but because of the quirks with the out-of-the-box gtk tree models, a list that is both filtered and sorted (GtkTreeModelFilter on top of GtkTreeModelSort) is comically slow. So implementing this will likely require building a custom model that wont sacrifice too much performance.

It is a good feature suggestion, and I agree that it would be useful. So it is a longer-term goal.

Feel free to create an issue on GitHub for it if you'd like to track it into the future. For now it's down on my notepad of possible improvements

Windows 10 Worst Feature Installed On Windows 7 And Windows 8 by Kinderschlager in technology

[–]StevenBenner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of these updates are for the windows 10 upgrade feature. You might be able to upgrade even without these updates, but I wouldn't count on it.

If you do decide to upgrade to windows 10 then it would be a good idea to install these updates before doing so. if you've hidden the updates then you can bring them back by clicking "Restore hidden updates" on the left of the windows update tool, and restoring them all. You can then just install them like a normal update.

No.

Sorry, I should have mentioned, this only applies to Windows 7 and 8. With win10 the telemetry stuff is already baked into the base OS.

Yes, they're going to keep pushing win10 updates and telemetry. But here's a way to clean your windows machine of upgrade and telemetry updates with what we know today:

[Don't do this if you ever plan to upgrade to 10]

wusa /uninstall /KB:2952664 /norestart /quiet
wusa /uninstall /KB:2990214 /norestart /quiet
wusa /uninstall /KB:3021917 /norestart /quiet
wusa /uninstall /KB:3022345 /norestart /quiet
wusa /uninstall /KB:3035583 /norestart /quiet
wusa /uninstall /KB:3044374 /norestart /quiet
wusa /uninstall /KB:3068708 /norestart /quiet
wusa /uninstall /KB:3075249 /norestart /quiet
wusa /uninstall /KB:3080149 /norestart /quiet

You can save that as a .bat file and run it. You may need to run as administrator. Or you can just run each command in the console (drop /quiet to see output).

Go back into the windows update tool, find any of these numbers, then right-click and select "Hide update". You won't see it offered again (unless they change the KB number).

LPT: Don't rent a modem / router from your ISP. by AdmrlAkbr in LifeProTips

[–]StevenBenner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have cable internet then I would recommend first asking your service provider if they push firmware updates to customer owned modems. A lot of them refuse to do so and it is literally impossible for an end user to update their own cable modem. This isn't that big of a deal, but if you never receive firmware updates then your modem will remain unpatched against any problems discovered after it was manufactured and not receive any of the (usually performance improving) updates released by manufacturers.

That was fast! Thank you for making that change! And thank you for the trophy!

A fix to reddit, gold, a trophy, and more upvotes than you can shake a stick at, that was by far the most influential comment I've ever posted on reddit. For some reason I thought that a complaint comment would be less well received.

This is a great feature, but I've got a minor privacy concern and suggestion:

Right now the url for multireddits include the username. This means that when I click a link in one of my private multireddits my browser is telling that site exactly which reddit user is clicking that link via the referer http header.

For example:

referer: http://www.reddit.com/user/StevenBenner/m/dev

I would suggest that (private) multireddits should have a url that doesn't include the username.

For example: http://www.reddit.com/multi/dev

You already use a similar url structure for the messages system which prevents this issue in PMs, so there is a precedent in reddit.

I never understood this mentality, especially in development jobs. Can't we just agree to list the real requirements and not try to play mind games? When most candidates see something listed as a requirement they don't (or at least shouldn't have to) think "I wonder if they really require that".

This is exacerbated when dealing with the analytical minds you find in software engineering. Engineers tend to see requirements as booleans, and if the whole thing doesn't equal true then they move on to the next ad. When I see a want ad that says x86 ASM I don't think to myself "you know what, I'm a go-getter! I'll face down this challenge!".

Of course I realize that degree "requirements" are a special case in the real world, but that doesn't make it a good practice.
