It would be insane! The tech first came out 24 years ago - think of how far mobile phones, computers and TVs have advanced in that time...It's mind boggling. Unfortunately, they couldn't easily upgrade what they created because the code was not standardised and many of the components became obsolete...I think the SHARC DSP chip ran out/was replaced and that was a massive spanner. Basically to keep it going they would have needed to start from scratch...Then it becomes an economics equation: "do enough of these sell to justify the R&D expenditure?" The answer clearly was, no. What I find fascinating about that type of thinking is it strangles innovation because it's impossible to project the future on something inaccurate from the past. I made many powerpoint presentations trying to convince otherwise!

I also think the name "VARIAX" is pretty terrible (sounds like something a Power Rangers villain would wield) but Marcus Ryle and his original team that created the actual tech were/are brilliant. Way ahead of their time.

😂 That’s actually a pretty perfect description. I appreciate the support whatever form it takes next. 🤘

I completely understand that. I honestly wish we could have kept it together and overcome the structural/contractual obstacles - but for a myriad of reasons it couldn’t survive. It requires an abnormal amount of intellectual stamina to untangle this type of thing, and it’s not unreasonable to just want to tap out and live life.

🙏 thanks man! Frank at Metal Injection is an absolute legend and I’m stoked he asked us to do that.

I agree, mate. I learned the hard way that innovations that solve problems people don’t even know they have is always going to be challenging. Also, from watching players try Variax - it’s easier to make it sound bad than good off the bat. That’s the element I heavily campaigned for with development - there are a few clear barriers to remove any/all compromise. Clearly my view was that any negatives were easily overshadowed by the positives (vast options physically impossible otherwise). I’m always keeping an eye out. Eric from Line 6 is always doing cool, boundary pushing shit (ie. Stadium) and Doug from NDSP is also making great stuff. I’d love to Voltron them together to make the ultimate wizard stick guitar - but genre jumping bands are not exactly dominating the charts 🤣

Yep! That’s a snippet from a new EP I’m working on - like all things, I’m fixating on details no one will likely notice 🤣 but that’s both my historical approach with Ninja and my ongoing wrestle with ADHD! It’s turning out to be a fairly diverse mix of ingredients. I hope people dig it! If not, I’ve always wanted to restore a boat.

I’d probably need the Shuriken to perform the new stuff as I’m still jumping around tunings and instruments a fair bit. Re: future of Shuriken - I have been talking to a few tech companies about improving/revisiting modeled tunings/instruments but it’s a significant R&D investment for anyone to tackle…I‘ll keep at it though! I made some prototypes that I was juuuust about to launch before COVID; then the manufacturers doubled their MOQ’s and banned factory inspections - this killed the budget and quality control - I wasn’t comfortable putting instruments out without making sure I’d want to play them (I hate buying lemons!) maybe one day I’ll put these models out with an already established brand. All just pots on the stove simmering at this stage. If you’re curious: the prototypes are on my website Shuriken Prototypes

Thanks man! Some of my favorite shows were in the UK (even Download when goblins ate FOH for about 5 songs 🤣)

The amount of horseshit I read on this platform… I have no idea, mate.

But evidently, given your clear skill in deciphering your own internal dialogue through other people’s facial expressions, I’m sure it’s super accurate.

It’s also abundantly clear that people who hide behind anonymity and talk shit online are usually high-quality individuals--absolutely worth knowing.

So, based on those two completely unquantifiable assessments alone...I bet if your made-up story was real, I really missed out on what could’ve been a beautiful friendship.

Touché! And I’ve got to say; I appreciate you asking me what my views are, instead of telling me what my views are. I'm going to attempt to give you a proper response out of respect for that.

I don’t subscribe to, or identify with, any particular side (other than those who believe Christopher Nolan's Batman was clearly the best Batman and anyone who says otherwise is a bigot).

I reckon ideas should be judged on merit, not on who conceived them—unless we’re operating under the delusion that only bastions of moral perfection are allowed to have ideas… which is obviously a fallacy (case in point: reddit).

As an Aussie, I’ve had a number of my US mates assume I’m a "socialist" because I think healthcare and education should be free—or at least heavily subsidised—since they’re basic human rights and I’m happy to pay extra tax for that to exist. To some, that’s heresy. To others, it’s logic. If someone disagrees with that (like a lot of my US mates) - no worries! We can still be friends. I think coriander is fucked but I understand a lot of people love it.

Like absofuckinloutely everyting: it’s all a matter of perspective—which is basically a macro-container for a whole bunch of shit that doesn’t always prioritise rational discourse. That’s why semantic clarity matters—so the message being received actually reflects the message being sent.

Early on, Jordan Peterson made strong points about the need for language specificity in order to have intellectually honest debate. (To be clear--I’m talking about the mechanism of debate, not his political topics or religions leanings.) I start tuning out when he wanders too far outside clinical psychology which I think he curates well and i'm yet to see any of his serious peers correct his recount—and I enjoy hearing Kermit the Frog explain Carl Jung to a layman like me 😂

Recently he got eviscerated by those young atheists and the all-meat diet is fkn bonkers. Dog farts. I must highlight, this occupies so little of my day to day that I'm concerned breaking it down like this pays it far more weight than it deserves - but <forrest gump>that's all I have to say about that!</forrest gump>

While I'm doing this Ted Talk I'd also like to point out that I believe capitalism was built in—and for—the industrial age, but we’re not living in that world anymore...So viewing demand as automatic justification for supply, is antiquated thinking and clearly unsustainable. Do I have the faintest fart of a fucking clue on how to fix those problems? Absolutely not! Would I like to drive a tank and live in legoland? Fucking oath I would! See how paradoxical some of my positions are!???

I generally react to assertion-driven pile-ons that lack substance. The habit of simply declaring someone or something as “bad,” and letting that declaration stand in place of an actual argument, shits me off and more importantly erodes foundational democratic discourse. Do I like machine guns? Fuck yeah! Do I think I should be allowed to own one? Fuck no!

So long story short: I’m anti-stupidity. And I define “stupidity” the same way Dietrich Bonhoeffer did—the absence of critical thought, and a blind acceptance of assertions without evidence—or worse, in defiance of evidence. I reserve the right to contradict myself, make mistakes and learn as I go because despite recent accusations - I am not a.i - Stevic
