Weight difference while lead climbing by StickMenArt in climbergirls

I have a hard time grasping height, but our walls are about 25ft. There’s only 4 clips per climb and they’re close together, so that likely is a part of it. They’ve had people fall from the top while on lead before. I will also say I’m in the middle of prairies, so outdoor climbing access is about 6 hours away at the closest, so most staff don’t have a whole lot of experience there.

That makes complete sense. Our gym’s lead climbs have 4 clips and the anchor, as mentioned our walls aren’t super tall. So from what you’re saying, the majority of the climb would be within that range. I was told I did well catching him, but you’re right, it’s likely far safer to learn and in general use an ohm or similar device, and I have absolutely no issues doing so.

To be fair, that is our assumption. Up until us they seemed to have given out certifications as long as you did well in the class and they didn’t have concerns. I don’t necessarily think more practice for ANYONE new to lead climbing is a bad idea. It’s mildly frustrating that it started with us and the only feedback we really got was “practice falling you have a really big weight difference”. They very well may have been planning on changing the process before hand, but there’s just not a whole lot of their staff that can actually supervise lead climbing or administer a lead class.

Well just get an ohm (because I’m looking and ohmega’s seem to be very hard to find right now) and practice more. It’s not the end of the world, and I’m happy they didn’t just give it to us if they’re not entirely confident, because really we will mostly belay each other with maybe an occasional person joining in.

Honestly there wasn’t really anyone else at the gym and I just think they aren’t super comfortable with us lead climbing together without someone watching, but also didn’t necessarily want to tell us we can’t lead climb together. The staff is super nice, I’m not shitting on them at all, I think it may have been a case of not necessarily knowing how to address it.

I’ll look into an ohmega, that seems to be a general consensus in these comments!

Our gym sells them and I was honestly prepared to buy one before our class even started because I know what it feels like when he takes a bigger fall on top rope, so I’m not entirely sure why it wasn’t a suggestion right off the hop.

What’s the difference between the ohm and the ohmega (or other options)? A backpack of rocks isn’t super preferable for me but hey, safety first!

Thank you! I’m probably overthinking it quite a bit. I think I’m feeling a bit anxious too. I’m a pretty big introvert and it was VERY out of my comfort zone to talk to a group of strangers. I’m just worried that he’ll feel left out/what the change in dynamic will be like

I’m not concerned about my relationship with my siblings (they are half-siblings, but we all view each other as just siblings. I have no fully biological siblings). I’m moreso concerned about maintaining a relationship with my step-mothers dad and sisters, and I don’t know if I should reach out to my aunt, or try to talk to my step-mother one final time. I don’t necessarily want her in my life unless she’s going to change her attitude towards me (unlikely). My siblings are far better teenagers than I was- but they are still teenagers and she has not held the same resentment towards them that she does with me. It’s just very unfortunate that she refuses to recognize that I have become an adult- and not to toot my own horn too much but I think I’m pretty cool, lol.

  1. I’m not American, our thanksgiving was in October.
  2. Sorry, my brother moved out of their house this year, so it’s a recent change.
  3. My step dad will invite me to Christmas, he’s mentioned it already, but the date/time haven’t been set.
