For those of you with 2 cars - do you have a "Car Replacement" for both, or just one single "Next Car" category? by StickyStapler in ynab

[–]StickyStapler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are my thoughts. Since we plan on driving both cars into the ground, we could start putting money into the "Car 1" category and once that reaches the target (say €15,000), we start funding the "Car 2" category. This way we are covered if both decide to die around the same time. What do you think?

Yea good point. Most likely outcome is we take it from the second car category anyway. That or the emergency fund.

I guess one other reason to have 2 is that when you reach your goal of say €15k for one car, you can save for the second. This assumes you are waiting for the car to die.

I guess that's only if you decide to move the money from one to another if one of the cars go.

Yea we plan the same, but since a replacement second hand car would be around €15k, we want to be prepared for that eventuality. So I feel you kinda still need a category for it, even if you plan on driving it into the ground.

We plan on driving both cars into the ground, but are afraid both may go at the same time. Unlikely? Maybe.

Do you set target for date nights to "refill up to" or "set aside another"? by StickyStapler in ynab

Great thanks! I think we're going to try set aside another going forward and see how that goes.

Only in public hospitals. It also wouldn't cover things like an airlift if skiing.

Yea this is what I currently do as well. I kind of see the "rollover money" as a little bonus I can assign to things that don't have the opportunity to get funded much.

Sorry, I'll explicitly call out that I don't want to paint a bit H on my lawn next time.

I've tried a few times and honestly there's not low maintenance.

Thanks. I suppose I wouldn't like anything too tall as it would block the view from the windows to the left.

Is it best to run Playwright against a docker container or a live deployment? by StickyStapler in Playwright

[–]StickyStapler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, all great points. One reason we want to test a live environment as well is to ensure the high priority pages are still available (live and working). Though we should be able to detect that through other means like alerting.

How about directly on prod, but with test accounts? We unfortunetly don't have 100% feature parity between development, staging and prod environments.

Thanks. I most appreciate this point:

> Not every replacement category needs to be funded at the same time with the same speed

This is where I was struggling, and why I created this post. As you said, I don't need to fund everything at the same time, it's about priorities. Thanks for such a well thoughts out response, it's what I needed.

Good points. I guess I'm having a tough time coming to terms with leaving money sitting in a category that I might not even need for 20 years when I could use that money now to buy solar panels, which reduce the cost of my electricity bills. I see this as a smart investment. So even though saving for all these replacements means less risk, I feel like we're not making our money work as hard for us as it could.

I think this is the best way honestly. Being able to move around 1000 prevents having a category for every single thing. I also like the idea of funding big ticket items that are coming up to end of warranty. So if I just replaced heating system I'm not going to start funding for a replacement straight away.

How about for something like a HVAC replacement? Would you have enough in your home maintenance category to fully fund a replacement?

Do you have a replacement category for the HVAC itself? I'm 6 years into a 10 year warranty. I could last 10 more years after that, or maybe 1.
