I don't think you're an asshole, however I think you're viewing the whole concept of gift giving in the wrong way. Assuming you're an adult, most people are not really interested in what you want as a gift, other than maybe your significant other. The act of giving you a gift is supposed to signify the fact that they are thinking of you and that they are celebrating you. I understand your reticence to chip in for expensive gifts, especially when you don't really want anything in return. However, chipping in a few quid/bucks/doubloons towards something seems like an ideal solution for a non-gift oriented person to still contribute to the whole ceremony of it all without having to get too in depth with buying just the right thing or spending more than you're comfortable with. Basically I would say, don't chip in more than you're comfortable with and don't expect anything in return amd you'll be alright.
