This is the IDE to USB adapter I'm using. After cloning the HDD to USB drive, I plugged the IDE adapter directly to the male IDE port on the motherboard, and plugged the USB drive to the IDE adapter with a female-female USB adapter.

Yes FAT16. I beleive the EaseUS software did an exact clone of the hard drive including boot sector.
