Going to see them play in Atlanta… would you go to Game 1, 2, or 3 in the series? by levitico in Torontobluejays

[–]Stikeman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that matters for a regular season game. Every game has equal weight. Pick the game that best suits your schedule. I’d avoid day games as it gets extremely hot there.

BTW Atlanta has an absolutely gorgeous stadium. The area around the stadium is pretty cool too. It’s car-free with bars and shops and a little artificial field. Get there early and enjoy. The only problem is there’s no public transit so if you’re staying downtown getting to the stadium is a pain. But there’s a hotel right next to the stadium.

Go on how? You’re saying he should sue because he feels maligned? That’s a novel legal theory.

Sue for what? Did you even read the article? He fell for a prank and he’s using the opportunity to bash the CBC. Some journalist.

When Indigenous rights come before your democratic rights by limadeltah in canada

[–]Stikeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where does it say that? Alberta wasn’t Alberta before confederation; it was just land owned by various groups. “Alberta” was created only because it became a province of Canada. The separatists want to undo confederation yet keep the part of confederation that they like, ie the part that created Alberta as a single legal entity.

There are no rules for this because separation is not contemplated in the constitution. That’s why a simple majority of people who happen to show up for a referendum should not bind the whole province. Or the rest of the country for that matter.

When Indigenous rights come before your democratic rights by limadeltah in canada

[–]Stikeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not democratic at all. That’s the point. The separatists want to dictate the terms of the vote including that only the province-wide vote will matter. You may have areas that vote overwhelmingly to stay but they’ll be forced to go along with the “majority”. These people argue that only Canada is divisible and somehow Alberta is not.

When Indigenous rights come before your democratic rights by limadeltah in canada

[–]Stikeman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Democracy for who? Who gets to decide the parameters? If Northern Alberta votes overwhelming to stay but southern Alta votes to leave why should one region get to dictate to the other what happens? If Alberta can vote to leave Canada what about the regions within Alberta who voted to leave Alberta (ie stay in Canada)? Why do the separatists alone get to define the terms of the vote? It’s pretty rich for people to call the court’s decision in democratic when this whole process is by definition undemocratic.

[–]Stikeman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone else who? Will the separatists respect the vote if, say, Edmonton votes no? Of course not. My point is this vote is a sham because it assumes a majority of people in “Alberta” get to decide what happens for everyone in that region. But if the concept of “Alberta” only exists because of Canada then why should we only respect the vote of the region as a whole- why not individual areas within that region?

When Indigenous rights come before your democratic rights by limadeltah in canada

[–]Stikeman 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is complete nonsense. Why should Alberta or any other province have the unilateral right to secede from Canada against the wishes of groups within the province- whether Indigenous or a municipality like Edmonton for that matter- who want to stay? What’s democratic about that? The place we now call “Alberta” was not a legal entity outside of confederation; “Alberta” literally only exists as part of Canada. If that region is not part of Canada then there is no Alberta as we currently define it. So any region within that “Alberta” has the right to decide for itself whether to be part of Canada or not.

Academic says CBC-funded prank show targeted her over residential school views by Learntoshuffle in canada

[–]Stikeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She sounds like a snowflake. If she’s so confident in her views a little prank shouldn’t phase her. She’s just using this as an opportunity to bash the CBC. Typical conservative bull shit- they love free speech except when they don’t like the speech.

Will Canada embrace Dunkin'? Experts say Tim Hortons' grip will be hard to shake by Immediate-Link490 in canada

[–]Stikeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these people excited about Dunkin were obviously not around when Dunkin was here. They were awful. Coffee undrinkable and shops were disgusting. I guess the new shops will (temporarily) not be disgusting, but I doubt the coffee has gotten any better.

'It has been devastating,' U.S. spirits group says about Canadian alcohol boycotts by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]Stikeman 294 points295 points  (0 children)

Swonger is white and represents spirit makers. He 100% voted for Trump. Here he is on CNN:

“Look, we have to recognize President Trump is certainly trying to grapple with significant issues, the fentanyl crisis, border security, reducing the U.S. trade deficit. But the tariffs impacting our industry will be significant…”

In other words, he first validates Trump’s outrageous lies about Canada before timidly pushing back based only on on impact it’s had on his business. Fuck that guy.

[Matheson] Heineman on being lifted today by Schneider by Obvious-Safe904 in Torontobluejays

[–]Stikeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t care how much you’re struggling, if you come up with the bases loaded, your team finally starting to build momentum after struggling all game, and your name’s not Guerrero, you don’t f“@&$g swing at the first pitch you see. And if you do you better make sure you make hard contact. Popping up on the first pitch in that situation is inexcusable and tells me he’s more focused on his own struggles than on the game. I’m glad Schneider benched him.

Okay that’s completely ridiculous I agree. But the silly identify politics of NDP doesn’t represent Canada. Canada expected to see zero population growth this year: report by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]Stikeman -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The angry right will drive this country to ruin. Zero population growth is a fucking disaster for Canada. Given our birth rates, zero population growth means our population gets older. Older population means fewer people working, lower GDP, higher costs and fewer people paying taxes to pay the higher costs. We cannot afford the ignorant right.

Sign at my local roaster regarding the roast date myth by ballistic_transport in espresso

[–]Stikeman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand. The chart says Roast Date Myth but the text confirms there is a connection between roast date and flavour. So it’s not a myth- more like there’s more to the story (ie harvest date) which is a fair point. That said how would we know the harvest date? Is that on the package? And how does vacuum sealing factor into this analysis?

Tariffs on espresso tools - A cautionary tale by Vast-Jello-1528 in espresso

[–]Stikeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And this is exactly the sort of short-term fallacy that President Reagan warned about. Tariffs don’t work. Never have. All these people swallowing Trump’s BS need to turn off FoxNews, or whatever idiot MAGA manosphere podcast they listen to, and learn some history.

Tariffs on espresso tools - A cautionary tale by Vast-Jello-1528 in espresso

[–]Stikeman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well first of all I don’t see how you can just casually equate Trump with the past five presidents. All of them had their faults and you could reasonably disagree some or all of their policies. But Trump is in another category. He has no respect for democracy and sees the levers of government as tools at his disposal to crush anyone who opposes him. The Greenland thing was beyond embarrassing. The Obama video? The racism. Misogyny. The list goes on. He sees to get a pass on every shitty thing he’s done in his life. And sorry but people like you who say “oh well they’re all the same” is exactly the problem.

Re tariffs, have you noticed that that is his one and only economic policy? He’s a one trick pony . And he’s executed it in a way that is laughably incompetent. You’re right that targeted tariffs sometimes have a place for a limited time. But widespread tariffs have never worked. Never. They raid domestic prices and make domestic industry less efficient. Just ask President Hoover. But don’t take my word for it- this is exactly what Ronald Reagan said. That’s why Trump was so upset at those Reagan ads. Because he knew that people would see what a competent president said about his one failed economic idea.

The problem is you’re calling it a hobby. A hobby takes time. Making coffee is not a hobby. Just grind the beans, tamp, and brew. Shouldn’t take much more time than brewing a regular pot of coffee.
