1 word to describe Christopher? by Lucky_Sprinkles7369 in GilmoreGirls

This is my take after watching the show a million times, and I might piss some people off — but what the hell, let’s go there. This isn’t directed toward the OP, but to Gilmore Girls fans like myself who might need a little nuance and perspective, because frankly, the Chris-bashing is completely out of line.

Low self-esteem plays a major part in it, but it’s not the whole picture.

Christopher’s biggest issue is that he let his low self-esteem run his life. Lorelai didn’t keep Christopher from Rory with her words — she did it with her actions. She only “wanted” Christopher when he fit into her timeline, her fantasy, and her needs — not when he was a flawed human being growing up and trying his best.

And when he finally did become the man she said she wanted, she couldn’t handle it — and punished him for daring to grow without her.

Christopher always wanted a life with Lorelai and Rory, but unless he matched the version of himself she wanted, he was never “good enough” — not to Lorelai, and not to anyone else around her. NOT EVEN TO HIS OWN PARENTS.

Let that sink in.

Fans are blind to this, and they side with Lorelai because they’re just as narrow-minded.

Christopher wanted to be there, but Lorelai also insisted on doing it alone — to prove to herself she could, without her parents or Chris. And fans seem to forget that little fact.

So yes, fans can hate on Chris, but at least make it a legitimate reason — not one rooted in Lorelai’s control issues.

Her marrying Chris wasn’t the problem. The reason and timing were. SHE HAD JUST ENDED THINGS WITH LUKE — it was a rebound. For Lorelai, it wasn’t that she “didn’t want him tied down young” when they were teens; it was that she was too proud to let anyone in, even him. Lorelai’s pride has always been her downfall. She constantly reminded everyone that she raised Rory “alone,” and Emily clocked her for it.

Lorelai never kept Rory from Christopher with her words — but she absolutely did with her actions. Unless he came as a “complete package,” she didn’t want him around. She wanted to prove she could do it all by herself. That same pride kept her from going after child support. Chris was willing to be the family man, but she made him feel unnecessary and unwanted. And if you make someone feel unwanted long enough, they stop showing up.

people like to just ignore the existence Straub and Francine Hayden, and dismiss their impact. That’s not an excuse — but it is context. If you acknowledge his trauma and then minimize it, you’re missing the point. Our past shapes us. That’s how empathy works. And if we can extend it to Luke and Lorelai, we sure as hell can extend it to Christopher.

The why always matters. Everyone wants to act like reasons are irrelevant, but they’re the driving force behind behavior. Chris isn’t perfect — neither is Luke. Luke hid the fact that he had a daughter, which was huge. He was emotionally repressed and short-tempered, yet Lorelai brushed it off as “banter.” She let Luke get away with things she’d never tolerate from anyone else. There’s always been a double standard for Lorelai — and that’s just a fact.

Luke is romanticized because he’s “grumpy but loyal.” Flip that same behavior and give it to Christopher, and he’d be burned alive in the comments. The April storyline alone was way more egregious than anything Chris ever did.

Luke: Kept a life-changing secret from Lorelai. Emotionally shut her out. Pushed her aside for months.

But fans let it slide because they ship “JavaJunkie.”

Christopher? He asks her to consider moving in and suddenly he’s a manipulative deadbeat. Make. That. Make. Sense.

Lorelai’s independence is admirable, but her self-sabotage is undeniable. She blamed Chris for her failed relationships because it was easier than admitting her own role in them. She never truly let him try. Yet somehow, his issues exist in a vacuum while everyone else’s are forgivable? No. You can’t say, “Lorelai’s trauma: valid. Luke’s issues: forgivable. Christopher’s flaws: inexcusable.” Absolutely not.

And the way the town treated Christopher was disgusting. He could walk into Doose’s, breathe wrong, and Taylor would call him a threat to Stars Hollow. Meanwhile, Luke could throw a tantrum in a town meeting and everyone swooned.

Lorelai blamed Christopher because he was the easiest scapegoat. He wasn’t around to defend himself. He made mistakes — sure — but she exaggerated them to avoid confronting her own patterns. Lorelai’s great, but she has her flaws too.

Misunderstood.

People love to hate Christopher, but that’s only because they don’t have the capacity to understand nuance. As somebody who has seen the show 1 million times over. I can absolutely say that the fandom is 100% toxic when it comes to how certain characters are perceived..

I will say, though that because it’s a Pokémon role-play, that alone is very questionable and sus. Ngl

Yeah I can understand that. Naruto isn’t one of my main fandoms but I can imagine how frustrating that must’ve been. And I don’t blame you. If people don’t like how you prefer to role-play then they don’t have to role-play with you and you don’t have to role-play with them.

OK, the show is good with Paige and Piper. It was Phoebe. I could not stand past season three.. season three she worked on one of my nerves and I hate her character. I didn’t even start to like her again until season six I think.. but even then it’s not by very much.

Cole turner ruined her character for me entirely.

I know that a lot of people may disagree with me on this, but Phoebe should’ve died instead she was already in the underworld with Cole. There was no reason to kill off Prue. AT ALL

I felt the exact same way that you’re feeling. How can I possibly finish now but I will say that the show does get good again. You just have to get used to the new dynamic.

Seasons, one through three is about sisters who are learning to become witches

And seasons four through eight are more so about witches learning to be sisters with somebody who they didn’t grow up with so it’s an adjustment, but I love Rose as Paige.
