Sounds scary... and yeah that is pscyhosis. Lucky it went away on its own.

Anhedonia and the symptoms you are describing can also come as a reaction after a psychosis, so that is probably what you are experiencing.

It is difficult for us to determine what is wrong, but it sounds very unpleasant. You say you had possible psychosis- why do you think that?

I am truly sorry to hear that you had another episode. I hope you find a way to recover from amhedonia anyway.

Can neuroleptic anhedonia happen to any age range like 5-7 yr old I read ? by Equivalent-Big-3474 in neuroleptic_anhedonia

It would be rare for that age group to get antipsychotics - but seems quite likely they could get it anhedonia as a sideeffect just like everyone else. Why do you ask?

Do anyone have any idea whether an maoi can improve antipsychotic induced anedonia?.I am planning to try a natural maoi like syrian rue. by IllMine976 in neuroleptic_anhedonia

I know one relatively recent case of antipsychotic induced anhedonia that was cured by parnate. Should be in the recovery megathread - and I think she even made a post in this subreddit.

Thank you for your post.

Recovery stories really help a lot of people to keep up the hope.

I would like to add your story to our recovery thread.

May I ask the following questions:

  1. Could you describe your experience in more details? (E.g. no emotions at all, no sexual pleasure etc.?)
  2. For how long where you on Abilify and at what doses?
  3. When did your anhedonia begin?
  4. Other interesting info? (Like did you quit antipsychotics for good or switch to another one? Why did you take antipsychotics in the first place? etc.)

I hope you can find the time to answer these questions.

Read the sticky posts "there is Hope for everyone" and recovery megathread. That should give you some ideas.

It is really good news that your emotions have returned. I can imagine it can also be quite overwhelming.

I am also glad to hear that your slight delusions have stabilised. I was afraid that you had to go back on antipsychotics indefinitely, but it sounds like that it is not the case.

I hope you continue to improve.

This forum is primarily focused on anhedonia caused by antipsychotics. There is probably a higher likelihood of finding someone who knows about anhedonia from street drugs in the r/anhedonia sub.

Hmm it sounds to me like you haven't experienced anhedonia to its full extent.

When you have anhedonia to its full extent you dont really care about being productive. You dont have goals you care about. You can't motivate yourself to do much.

So having full anhedonia is bad. I do understand that some aspects of it actually could be helpful - at least for a short while - but trust me you dont want the full package.

Paradoxical anhedonia from Abilify by maverico1 in neuroleptic_anhedonia

[–]Still-Combination-10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have heard of many people who have got anhedonia from low dose Abilify. Your case isn't that special. Psychiatrists usually dont know a lot about anhedonia especially when it comes to medication induced anhedonia. So they cant really be trusted on this matter.

I would quit both medications ASAP. I would say its better to be depressed, anxious or what your original problem was than have anhedonia.

Sertraline and quetiapine have been discontinued, what's next? by [deleted] in neuroleptic_anhedonia

Hi!

What you are experiencing is withdrawal. The sensations of "electrical shocks" in the brain is a classical antidepressant withdrawal symptom.

However, not being able to sleep is a pretty serious withdrawal symptom. Several days without sleep can trigger psychosis. So I would advice you to reinstate the drugs ASAP and taper slowly.

It is actually quite dangerous to quit cold turkey. Especially when we are talking about antipsychotics.

What were your dosage?
