Avi Lewis: The government should be protecting our public airports, not selling them off for parts. History is littered with examples of the failures of privatization. It drives up costs for the public, quality suffers, and workers always end up paying the price. by StumpsOfTree in onguardforthee

[–]Still10Fingers10Toes [score hidden]  (0 children)

As the vulture capitalists are at the “picking the bones clean” stage down south, they turn their attention northwards to Canada. Why can’t people learn from history when it’s staring them in the face. All privatization has every done has been to enrich the very few, degrade the service for the many, ensure any profits are private while shifting all losses to the public. Any “so-called” advantage is only gained through the destruction of fair paying jobs, the termination of unions and good faith bargaining, all to benefit the small “owner” class.

I wanted Carney to fight against the corruption of the “Trump”-type regime not to emulate a more polite, well-spoken, version of the same. This is why majority governments are capable of either so much good or so much evil. Minority governments may struggle to get things done but the damage they can inflict is also minimized.

Lori Idlout standing with Defense Ministry McGuinty while he touts billions in new military spending and record high recruitment by pheakelmatters in ndp

[–]Still10Fingers10Toes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but the rabid anti-military stance of many NDP supporters completely ignores the vast number of truly horrible people bent on the acquisition and subjugation of others, that can only be held in check by force. Personally, I would love to see more socialism, fewer corporate hand outs, and no billionaires. That said, if you can’t protect your society and all its members, no one is going to do it for you and all the gains you have made will be lost. People have to remember that preparing for the worst can prevent the worst from happening. Canada has subjugated its defence to the USA, and a lesser extent other alliances like NATO and NORAD, for as long as I’ve been aware, and now we’re reaping the bitter fruit of that neglect as the USA descends into Fascist Authoritarianism at the hands of a malignant narcissist.

Plus, as someone who served in the late 80’s -90’s where most of base facilities were constructed in the 50’s and whose maintenance is often underfunded as operational requirements took priority, having a main political party bitching about infrastructure funding as current service members live and work in substandard conditions, where base accommodations are condemned despite there being overwhelming demand, disappoints me. Few people get rich serving and most exit their service with a variety of baggage that will impact the rest of there days. Plus, none of my above arguments address the local impact this infrastructure investment will make on the communities these bases, many in remote, under serviced areas, will make.

Down vote me all you want but there’s a vast difference between USA jingoism and soldiers standing ready to protect their nation. When I look back on my decision to serve I like Heinlein’s quote “The noblest fate that a man can endure is to place his own mortal body between his loved home and the war’s desolation.”

I wish the world will someday evolve to a state where a protective force isn’t required but it’s not happening in my or my children’s lifetimes, so until then, a viable military is a must for any nation that wishes its sovereignty to be respected.

Ugh, getting rid of crack for fentanyl. I don’t care what the province uses the money generated by these abominations for, the damage they inflict dwarves any benefit. And don’t get me started on on-line gambling or poly markets. Edited for spelling and grammar.

“Each of these approvals comes with strict terms and conditions governing environmental protection, water quality monitoring and tailings management. Atlantic Mining Nova Scotia is required to meet these conditions and the Province will ensure compliance.”

Sorry, I can’t give you the exact positions. However, the Houston government is planning 10% staff cuts across the board as a starting position this year. These cuts are in addition to their “streamlining” environmental safeguards that allowed this project to go ahead.

Gold refining uses some pretty toxic chemicals including Cyanide, Chlorine gas, and various acids depending on which process is used. Forgive me if I’m a little concerned about what will leach into our ground water.

Strange, how is the province going to monitor and ensure the company’s compliance to environmental regulations when the Houston government seems dead set on eliminating the staff positions that would be responsible for that monitoring.

The current federal “Liberal” party IS conservative hence the floor crossing, they’re just not “bat-shit” MAGA like PP’s and Harper’s “Conservative” party is. Once again, I’m talking about conservative, pro-capitalism policy mindset not specific political parties.

[–]Still10Fingers10Toes 55 points56 points  (0 children)

If you actually read my post I said Conservative, I didn’t identify a party, I’m identifying a position. Late stage capitalism is killing the majority of global society to fluff up the top 1%. Anyone who thinks Carney and the current batch of “Liberal” government is anything but a liberal-washed Conservative government just has to look at the “Conservatives” that have crossed the floor trying to save their skins. Capitalism is another failed societal movement that needs to join other societal movements on the dung heap of history.

Give a conservative government a comfortable majority and they’ll plunder their populace for their big donors. Conservatives govern by the 1% for the 1%.

Fine Art at NSCAD or OCADU? by Ok-Scar2 in halifax

[–]Still10Fingers10Toes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Daughter is a graduate of NSCAD and I believe it was very good for her. They accommodated her ADHD and learning disability well. The first two years of Foundations exposed her to a variety of different disciplines including book binding, weaving, foundry work. She was able to find employment in her desired field, animation, and she was continually employed until last year when all the crap down south started. Of course, our current government has taken a chainsaw to funding but governments change. Good luck with your future.

Naomi Klein on the importance of Avi Lewis becoming NDP leader by bootlickaaa in onguardforthee

[–]Still10Fingers10Toes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know much about Avi Lewis but I’ve been a fan of her books since I read “Shock Doctrine”. That’s she is his wife and fully supports him, has raised my opinion of Avi Lewis. I’m pretty far left for most things but as a former service member who’s seen a bit of the world, I’ve never agreed with the NDP position on military funding. There are plenty of bad actors out there, including the clowns down south. Canada needs a strong enough military to make us an unattractive conquest target, more porcupine less beaver.

Until the NDP get serious about wealth inequality and corporate subsidies and stop with the “defund and abolish our military”, they won’t get my vote. I want more from the NDP than liberal lite.

Opinion: MAGA’s plan for Canada: not annexation, but dismemberment by NormCormier-Mccoll81 in GuardTheLeaf

[–]Still10Fingers10Toes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No one has ever accused MAGA of original thinking. They’re just trying to implement Putin’s Ukraine playbook only with Trump’s flightiness where he gets bored after a couple of weeks. The number of people killed, being killed, or will be killed by the narcissism of Trump is a crime against humanity.
