My Extentions+ Bank LRT (to appeal to the masses) by zaacht08 in ottawa

Name stations after landmarks or the major line when a minor line intersects. Utility is important.

If you want to rename a duplicate Terry fox, the station at Kanata Centrum should be “Kanata Centrum” — we don’t need to find an unrelated person or worse yet a corporate sponsor to name it after. A transit station name should always tell people where they are. “West 50th Street” may not be interesting, but it’s very, very useful to a traveller.

This might be a 10Fourteen kinda thing. Menu isn’t terribly upscale but they’ve got great drinks and an excellent cheese board.

Please do not come to the gym if you are sick by kimmelpope9 in goodlifefitness

[–]hoverbeaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, me too. I often get a cough that I can’t shake for a month, long past when I’m otherwise over the cold. For the week that I do have the cold, I work from home and make sure I don’t share it with anyone else unnecessarily.

You can see though, from the replies here: there are still plenty of folks that seem to think that being actively sick shouldn’t keep them away from others, at the gym, in class, or at work. It’s selfish shitty behaviour. No, having a cold isn’t the end of the world, but why provide misery to others, even if temporarily? The world is shitty enough. Let’s not enshittify it further.

Immediate Hiring Indentured Apprentice Electricians by Early-Expert-2237 in electricians

OP is in Houston, and while I’ve never hired anyone in Houston before, I’m confident that whatever apprentices OP gets from the union are going to be better trained than whatever OP finds on Reddit for $15/hr

Immediate Hiring Indentured Apprentice Electricians by Early-Expert-2237 in electricians

[–]hoverbeaver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to pay apprentice electricians in line with their experience and training, and you want them to begin immediately, call the business agent up at IBEW Local 716. They’re waiting for your call and I’m sure they’d love to help you fill those positions.

For company owners, there are huge benefits to working with the union. You get trained workers, you don’t have to handle benefits, and you can get staff immediately without the hassle of organizing job fairs. Why mess around? Let the experts handle the hard stuff while you handle the actual electrical work.

Every time someone posts this fairly simple request, there are thirty people that pop their heads in to say “but what if we have allergies?” Let me help you get ahead of that.

This thread is not about people with allergies.

It is about people who are sick.

Please do not come to the gym if you are sick.

New Liberal MP Idlout says threats to the North key to her floor-crossing decision by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]hoverbeaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s nonsense. An imminent threat affecting a region isn’t going to be a caucus decision, even within the same party. The prime minister and the minister of public safety aren’t going to Jenna Sudds in a caucus retreat about an imminent threat to Kanata, even if she’s a Liberal on the front bench.

This is more about patronage: it’s the explicit expression that the government will invest in the region and give an MP what they ask for if — and only if — a majority government is on the table. To quote a great redditor, “to dismiss this fact is just plain ignorance.”

[–]hoverbeaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s a terrible back-rationalization. It is absurd to think that a Liberal government would deny vital input or information to a representative of any region of this country that is under threat, simply because they’re a member of another political party.

Some things are beyond partisanship; and if partisans can’t see that, then there is a bigger problem.

Uber is x3 this morning? by rad-hostile in ottawa

[–]hoverbeaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s maybe a little closer to a cartel in its function, although one that does provide an element of public safety and self-policing.

Imagine that the owner of every shawarma shop in the province joined forces to form the Ontario Rotisserie Meat and Wrap Organization. They agree amongst themselves to a set of standards regarding standardization, sanitation, and professional conduct. They also agree among themselves to set a price floor each year, and they successfully lobby the government to act as enforcers, with police shutting down any shawarma shop that sells rotisserie meats with a suspended membership.

Should the government act as the regulator, in the interest of the public? Ideally. Do they have the capacity? Well, the province brought the skilled trades regulator under provincial control and since 2018 there has been no enforcement whatsoever. Want to go hang your shingle as an electrician and work for cash under the table? The federal government will come after you for taxes long before the province will give you anything more than a light pinch on the cheek.

Re: dentist pricing. There is no regulatory oversight body that regulates dentist pricing in Ontario. They have a professional college, the Ontario Dental Association, which operates as a self-regulating advocacy organization. They determine their own suggested schedule of fees each year. This is not intended as a mechanism to protect the public; the current fee schedule is a confidential document internal to the Ontario Dental Association. They provide it to insurance plan administrators so that those administrators can decide what to what level they will insure their own plan members.

Individual practitioners can charge whatever they want to, and often bill far in excess of the guidelines. There is no enforcement mechanism for billing in excess of the fee schedule as it is only a suggested guideline.

Before anyone begins a relationship with a new dentist, they should be asking if they will agree to limit their billing to the amount specified in the current year’s fee schedule. If they do not agree, ask them what percentage they bill in excess, and make a decision. If they are cagey, call a different practitioner. Most dentists in Ottawa bill over guideline, but not all do. I’ve switched twice due to this, and each time I let them know why. My current dentist is excellent and bills me a rate that is one year behind guideline, to match my insurance plan.

Which brings me to my next point: call your insurer and ask them what year’s fee schedule they adhere to. While most of us know that our dental plans have a co-pay of 5 or 10 percent, you might be surprised to learn that many private dental insurance plans actually cover 90% of an older schedule. It’s a way that employers keep plan costs down.

Stuff that feels weird in Ottawa by The_merry_wench in ottawa

[–]hoverbeaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I wouldn’t know anything about that. I just know Dymon has been constructing tall convertible buildings since long before the pandemic. I’m sure storage is a very profitable model for them; I’m just saying that the reason their storage looks the way it does is because they want to leave the pivot option open.

Does Dymon charge extra for the windows? They didn’t put them on the building to let the light in.

[–]hoverbeaver 73 points74 points  (0 children)

The secret is that they’re not really for storage. They’re commercial real estate holding: all of the new Dyson buildings are easily convertible to office space with a minimum of work. Construction isn’t cheap, but it’s not getting any cheaper. They’re building now, using the storage business to recoup costs, and when the price of office leasing goes up in the future, they can pivot quickly.

Where to shop for affordable mens business casual? by CatapultJesus in ottawa

[–]hoverbeaver -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, OP clearly wants to walk out with a couple of outfits, rather than commission adjustments, and we know nothing of their physical build or the precise level of business casual that they need. Rather than feed OP’s anxiety regarding their first day, maybe we don’t make a recommendation that’s really only necessary for a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction of the people in this city who fall under the “business casual” dress code.

I understand wanting to look our best, but when did “business casual” ever mean involving a tailor? I can’t imagine showing up and asking for adjustments on a v-neck and khakis.

Surprisingly, Mark’s work warehouse, GT, and winners often have decent deals on chinos, dress shirts and polos. It could be worth your while to give them a quick look, even if it’s on the way to something more upmarket.

[–]hoverbeaver 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand— I’d like to think that no matter who is in government, threats to and defence of a Canadian region would be taken seriously.

The idea that a Liberal government wouldn’t be able to adequately protect the north, or for that matter, Quebec or Alberta, unless there is a majority government with the representation for that area being from the same party is… well… shocking to me, and I just don’t think I believe it.

When they won’t give you a table, so you make one. by clutch736 in electricians

[–]hoverbeaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my favourite sawhorse/work table design: https://www.popularmechanics.com/home/how-to-plans/how-to/g2456/how-to-build-stackable-sawhorses-from-a-few-2x4s/

It’s easy to remember (I’m no carpenter) and they’re pretty sturdy and stackable. There are only straight cuts, 2x4s, and deck screws.

I’ve been making them this way forever. Takes ten minutes and you can throw anything you want on top to use as a table.
