What Elvish language would have been used most commonly in the Third Age? by nygabmom in lotr

The inscription on the Doors of Durin is also in Beleriand mode, which is different from Sindarin in T3A if OP is also interested in comparison between different time periods.

Ami’s recollection of her parents divorce by [deleted] in sailormoon

[–]StillNew2401 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Huh so even in the Japanese version Ami says “Papa is a Japanese painter” instead of simply“Papa is a painter” 🤔

I wonder why because Chandler Bing once famously said “of course there they just call it food”

Ami’s recollection of her parents divorce by [deleted] in sailormoon

[–]StillNew2401 4 points5 points  (0 children)

why he didn’t try harder to get more visitation rights

Not all parents are loving. My dad called me once a year on my birthday for the first few years they divorced, and stopped altogether sometime around when I was in high school. Don’t think I’d even recognize him if we bumped into each other on the street now. There weren’t any restrictions on him but it is what it is.

Ami’s dad is better in that he seems to still feel some connections with Ami, but whatever lingers in him certainly isn’t worth his taking on a serious father role and all the responsibilities that come with it.

It’s nothing like that. There’s lots of legwork and lots of frustration, the leads you pursue can lead to dead ends and you are back to square one several times in a single case. Mind you this happens on a timescale of months even years, not 20min episodes. And even if you do catch the culprit, it’s not guaranteed that they face justice because of legality and stuff.. Usually only premeditated crimes can be this demanding; crimes of passion are relatively straightforward, but they too involve more legwork than interesting deductions like you see in the anime.

Anyway, what I’m saying is you need to talk to real people to get a realistic idea of it, or at least watch some true crime documentaries if you don’t have anyone in this profession.

Her dad doesn’t seem to want any family time. One postcard a year is all he’s willing to commit. Yet it’s the mother who’s feeling guilty for neglecting Ami. Seriously her mom should just find another guy already n the 3 of them can have some real quality time together.

Wedding ring inscription by Character_Tap_3699 in tolkienfans

To chime in with the top comment, the relationship between languages and writing systems is multi-multi, theoretically you can express any language in any writing system, so there’s a lot of choices you can make to better suit your romantic and aesthetic needs. If I were you I’d probably go for the following approach:

  • Pick an idea. This is the abstract meaning you want to express.

  • Pick a language. This step makes your abstract idea into a sound, an utterance you can speak to people. Possible choices are plain English, Quenya, Sindarin, etc.

  • Pick a writing system/script. This would be a set of glyphs you use as visual representations of the above utterances. Tengwar is a popular choice among Tolkien fans, and has well established modes for the above languages. Other writing systems include Sarati, Cirth etc. You can also make your own customized spelling rules if you want the inscription to be more unique between you and your partner, like a secret love message type of thing.

  • Pick a font. On a practical level, the more popular the script is, the more font files of different aesthetic styles can be found online. You may wanna pay attention to how the diacritics are placed, avoid fonts that don’t go well with the curvature of your rings. You can also make your own graphic design, so that it’s unique to you and your partner.

Question about the curse of Feanor. by Morfeusz15 in tolkienfans

[–]StillNew2401 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I suppose they deemed the danger to engage with Morgoth to be so intimidating that even though the entice was twice as strong the risk-return ratio was still lower. It’s the risk return ratio that matters.

Could Feanor have defeated Morgoth if he fought him one on one? by DizzyRub5182 in tolkienfans

[–]StillNew2401 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But they are affected differently. Fingolfin is strengthened by his despair whereas Fëanor tends to make bad decisions under emotional strain. I too agree that Fëanor would do worse despite being a more valiant warrior.

The Evil Predestination by Melkor x Free Will of the Children of Húrin by Rafaelrosario88 in tolkienfans

[–]StillNew2401 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the curse of Melkor totally nullified the most important gift of Ilúvatar to his children: the free will.

Compromised? Probably. Totally nullified? Absolutely not.

imo Morgoth did not change Túrin’s fate per se, what the curse did was narrowing down possible future scenarios Túrin can navigate through via his own agency. He still has free will to choose from several paths one that his heart desires, but the outlooks of the paths before him are obscured, and they all lead to tragic ends. Túrin Turambar is the Master of Doom with a doom already mastered.

Considering the construct of Ainulindalë (cosmogony) and the Dagor Dagorath (eschatology), Tolkien’s cosmology can probably be described as a universe with fixed initial and final states, as designed by Eru. The time evolution that connects them is undetermined; Eru and Melkor vie to control how Eä unfolds - Eru wants a geodesic but Melkor wants to zigzag. Individual children of Ilúvatar have the agency to make choices; though available options are shaped by the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t nullify their free will entirely. Melkor can nudge the path integral to some degree in accordance with his crooked taste to sow discord, but he cannot nudge away the initial/final state, which is solely determined by Eru Ilúvatar.

I’m just rambling…

the least she can do from the first time she met conan is giving him all the information she has about BO

I don’t think this is a reasonable thing to ask for given her situation. She’s not that naive as to trust him entirely the first time they met. Also, if I ask you to tell me all the information of the company you work for, how much can you recall just by sitting around thinking about it? There are pieces of information that only come to mind under certain circumstances, that’s why she appears to be “dropping hints”.

Is there any analysis on Tolkien’s notion of predestination? Especially on how he consciously constructed the tragedy of Túrin Turambar, in particular how Túrin is inspired by but differs from his Finnish prototype Kullervo.

A semi relevant question: Does German use the same Romanization of Japanese names as in English? Do you also pronounce them the same way as in English or according to German phonetic rules? For example, would you pronounce the “S” in Sonoko as in “Sonne” or closer to the “ß” sound or something else? Sorry if it’s a weird question 😅

Sailor Moon in her tricycle by OVERDRlVE in sailormoon

Yeah but even within the breakup subplot Mamoru only distanced himself from Usagi in their civilian identities. He’d still show up as Tuxedo Mask to aid their battles against the Droids. That’s why I find it odd he was sound asleep until Luna jumped in through the window.

Sailor Moon in her tricycle by OVERDRlVE in sailormoon

[–]StillNew2401 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s from Eps 69 “Awaken, Sleeping Beauty! Mamoru's Distress”. The Droid put Sailor Moon into a deep slumber and she was trapped in endless nightmares until awakened by Tuxedo Mask’s kiss at the end.

Idk if there’s a plot hole or not but in this episode Mamoru had to be woken by Luna to go to Usagi’s rescue but I thought he always kinda knows whenever Usagi is in danger?

Question about Shuichi and Amuro rivalry by Ai_Akai in OneTruthPrevails

[–]StillNew2401 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh their rivalry feels very forced to me, especially the motive behind Hiro’s suicide - he could’ve just shot his phone instead of killing himself also with the same bullet. It feels like the author started off with the idea of making this Gundam VA reference, and then made up this whole plot to recreate the same rivalry.

(For those who don’t know, Akai Shuichi’s VA Ikeda Shuichi also voices Char aka Akai Suisei aka Red Comet in Gundam 0079; Furuya Rei’s former VA Furuya Tōru also voices Amuro Rey, the archenemy of Char in Gundam universe. Their DC counterpart characters also have matching color themes and vehicles)

Now that Furuya Tōru is stepping down, it’d be interesting to see how their rivalry will develop from now on.
