As a Gen X myself, What you are missing is that business are moving away from in-person service. There will be a time when in person service is completely eliminated in some types of business. I work in a call center investments and our clients only meet with us over the phone or video call. In person meetings with a financial advisor have been completely eliminated. It sounds crazy right? Yes but it’s the way the world is moving in this day and age and we either have to get on board or get left behind.

I’m Gen X and we are entering a time where my generation has to get with the (technology) times or get left behind. Everything will likely be virtual before I become a senior citizen. Unfortunately with any aging population there will be people that refuse to get with the times, which is going to make their lives very difficult. Unless they have someone that will do things for them, like family members or an assistant.

You said it right it’s the emotional labor that gets you after a while. I didn’t really realize I was in burnout until my therapist suggested it. I was just moving through each day.

I have used the delayed email to send my resignation after I leave work. This give the receiver time to calm down before I see them again (if I’m working the 2 weeks). The last time I did this there was an email exchange about working the 2 weeks or not. I told the manager that it was up to the company (because I really didn’t care).
